How to Verify a Large Video Upload Before an OBS YouTube Stream

A file that uploads successfully may still fail during playback or a live broadcast. Verify the local video, YouTube processing, and OBS stream separately.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify a large video at three separate stages: inspect and fully play or decode the local file, confirm YouTube has processed the upload and that it plays at the quality you need, then run a representative OBS-to-YouTube test stream and check stream health. Each stage catches different failures; a completed upload or valid file header alone does not prove the whole stream path works.

1. Preserve a trusted comparison point

If you still have the original recording, note its file size and calculate a cryptographic checksum before uploading. If you later compare it with a staged or downloaded copy, a matching checksum confirms those two files are byte-for-byte identical. It does not prove the original file itself is complete or playable.

Do not call an upload checksum-verified unless your workflow actually provides comparable checksums for the files being compared. An upload-complete indicator is not a checksum.

2. Inspect and test the local video

Check the container and streams with FFprobe

FFprobe can report container and stream information and surface probe errors. For example:

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

ffprobe -hide_banner -show_format -show_streams input.mp4

Replace input.mp4 with the file’s actual path. Output and behavior can vary with the installed FFmpeg build and the file. Check that the expected video and audio streams are present and that the reported format and duration make sense.

A successful metadata probe is not a full content review. It does not certify that every frame decodes or that the audio is intact.

Play or decode the whole file when it matters

For an important live event, play the video from beginning to end or run a complete decode pass. Check that the expected duration is present, picture and sound stay synchronized, audio is audible, and the ending is intact. If time makes a full review impossible, inspect the beginning, middle, and end—but treat that as sampling, not an exhaustive check.

3. Confirm YouTube processing and playback

After upload, wait for YouTube processing to complete, then open the uploaded video and test playback at the quality your stream requires. YouTube’s Data API documents processingDetails for processing information and says processingProgress is designed to be polled. Those fields describe a processing-status mechanism; they do not guarantee that every desired playback rendition is immediately available or establish a current YouTube Studio click path.

SSK Portable SSD 500GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

If playback fails or the quality you need is unavailable, wait and check again before treating the upload as ready. A processing status and successful playback answer different questions: processing tells you about the platform’s work, while playback confirms that the uploaded video can actually be watched.

4. Test the actual OBS-to-YouTube path

YouTube Help’s instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its encoder guidance also recommends checking upload speed, testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event, and monitoring stream health and messages. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  1. Prepare a restricted test. Before the event, run a private or otherwise appropriately restricted live test using the intended OBS setup and YouTube destination.
  2. Use representative content. Include movement and audio similar to what you will broadcast; a static or silent test may not reveal the same problems.
  3. Check the picture and sound on YouTube. Confirm the intended video is visible in the OBS scene and that sound reaches the YouTube preview or test viewer.
  4. Watch stream health while it runs. Review dropped frames, warnings, platform messages, and audio/video synchronization.
  5. Use a speed test as a diagnostic. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate. A speed-test result can inform setup, but it does not replace checking the actual stream path.

A recording preview only shows what was recorded locally; it does not prove that the live encoder-to-YouTube path is working.

5. Use format recommendations without overcorrecting

YouTube’s upload recommendations include MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, AAC-LC or Opus audio, and placing the MP4 moov atom at the front (“Fast Start”). These are recommendations, not proof that every other valid file will fail. Upload encoding recommendations and live encoder bitrate recommendations address different tasks; do not substitute one for the other.

OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide, dated 2023-03-26, describes MKV as a flexible default recording container that can be remuxed, and fragmented MP4/MOV as potentially suitable for uploads to services such as YouTube. Container suitability depends on the codecs inside and the intended workflow. If an OBS-produced file fails to upload or play, inspect its actual streams and consult the relevant YouTube upload guidance. Remux or re-encode only to address a concrete compatibility problem, and keep the original until you have checked the replacement.

6. Troubleshoot by checking each stage separately

What you observe What to check Next step
FFprobe reports errors or expected audio/video is missing The local file’s container and streams Confirm you are inspecting the intended file and path. Diagnose the actual file before changing its container or re-encoding it.
The probe looks normal, but the file has a bad section, silent audio, sync drift, or a truncated ending Full-file playback or complete decode Review the affected section and preserve the original while preparing and checking any corrected copy.
YouTube says processing is underway, playback fails, or the needed quality is unavailable Processing status and playback of the uploaded video Wait and recheck before treating it as ready; a processing indicator alone does not confirm playback at the required quality.
The local file plays, but the YouTube test has no picture or sound, warnings, dropped frames, or sync problems OBS scene output, audio reaching YouTube, stream-health messages, and upload capacity Use YouTube’s stream-health feedback to narrow down the live-path issue, then repeat a representative test before the event.
A local recording preview looks fine, but the live test is unverified The actual OBS-to-YouTube path Run a restricted live test. A local recording is not evidence that YouTube received and played the stream correctly.
