Use a two-part check before putting a video on air: run ffprobe to inspect its container and streams, then run ffmpeg to decode the whole file without saving a new copy. Finally, play it in the same OBS VLC playlist setup you plan to use. A successful probe alone does not show that the entire file can be decoded, and a successful decode does not guarantee playback in a different OBS/VLC setup.
1. Keep the original, then inspect the file with FFprobe
Run checks against the candidate video without changing it. If a check reports errors, keep the original intact and obtain a fresh copy before trying any repair.

With FFmpeg tools installed, open a terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt and run:
ffprobe -v error -show_error -show_format -show_streams "input.mp4"
Replace input.mp4 with the actual file path. Keep quotation marks around paths that contain spaces. FFprobe reports errors and displays format and stream information; look for the expected video and audio streams and basic container details. If it prints an error or cannot report the expected streams, investigate before using the file.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
A clean probe is only a first screen: FFprobe can read enough structure to report metadata without decoding every frame or audio packet. It is not a full integrity test.
2. Decode the complete file with FFmpeg
Next, ask FFmpeg to read and decode the media while discarding the decoded output. This checks substantially more of the file than a metadata probe and does not create a converted video:

ffmpeg -v error -i "input.mp4" -f null -
Use the same file path you probed. Let the command finish; a long file or a slower computer may take time. Review the messages as well as the exit status. Decode warnings or errors are a reason to investigate, even if the command appears to complete: some damaged media is partly recoverable, and behavior can vary by decoder and build.

FFmpeg provides options such as -xerror and -err_detect for more assertive error handling, including CRC, bitstream, buffer, and explode modes. These can help diagnose suspected damage, but treat a strict-mode failure as a diagnostic result—not proof that every player will fail the same way. A standards deviation or damaged packet may cause strict decoding to stop even when a player could conceal or skip it. Consult the documentation for the options supported by your installed FFmpeg build.

3. Test the file in the OBS playlist setup you will use
OBS documents VLC Video as the source for a playlist. It uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed; for 64-bit OBS, the OBS guide specifies installing 64-bit VLC. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to a test scene, add the candidate file to its playlist, and check playback near the beginning, middle, and end. Listen for audio problems too if the file has an audio stream.
This final playback check is practical guidance, not a vendor-certified test protocol. It answers a different question from FFmpeg: whether the file plays in your actual OBS/VLC configuration. The OBS Project describes the playlist distinction this way: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” OBS Media Sources guide (published January 11, 2022).

What each check tells you
| Check | What it establishes | What it can miss |
|---|---|---|
| FFprobe | Whether the file can be probed and what format and streams it reports; it can also expose probe errors. | It does not, by itself, decode the entire video and audio payload. |
| Full FFmpeg decode | Whether the installed FFmpeg build can read and decode the complete file, and what errors it reports. | It does not guarantee playback in another VLC/OBS build or through a different hardware path. |
| OBS VLC playlist test | Whether the target source opens and plays the file in that particular setup. | It does not certify playback in every player, operating system, or codec configuration. |
Supported format does not mean healthy file
OBS Media Source lists common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, as well as audio formats. A recognized extension does not prove that a specific file is intact or that its codec details will work in your setup. Conversely, a failure to play is not conclusive proof of corruption: missing VLC, a 32-/64-bit mismatch, file permissions or path access, codec details, and version-specific behavior can also be responsible.
Version can matter. OBS release notes document a fix for a crash involving a VLC playlist in OBS Studio 29; that is a reminder to check your installed version when a problem appears tied to the application. OBS Media Sources guide · OBS Studio release notes

Troubleshoot a failed check or playlist item
- FFprobe reports an error or expected streams are missing: Confirm the path and filename, then try a fresh copy of the file. Keep the original unchanged while diagnosing.
- FFprobe looks normal, but FFmpeg reports decode errors: Do not treat the metadata result as proof of file health. Review the FFmpeg log, try a fresh copy, and use stricter diagnostics only to investigate; strict failure alone does not establish how every player will behave.
- FFmpeg completes, but OBS cannot play the item: Check that VLC is installed and matches OBS architecture—OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Confirm that the file path is accessible to OBS, then check playback in the VLC Video playlist source rather than assuming Media Source provides playlist behavior.
- Playback fails only in a particular OBS version: Check the release notes for that version and consider whether an update addresses a known issue. The documented OBS Studio 29 VLC-playlist crash fix shows that application version can be relevant.
- The item starts but fails later: Check the middle and end in the target playlist. A probe or brief opening preview may not reveal a problem that appears later in the file.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded videos running as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not an OBS file-checking tool. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, and each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start your free day.
