Yes—you can put 720p and 1080p videos in the same YouTube playlist without converting them to a common resolution first. Upload the videos, add them to a playlist, and arrange their order. YouTube adjusts its player to each video; playback quality can vary by video and viewing conditions.
Here, “playlist stream” means videos playing sequentially. A playlist is not a continuous live broadcast. If you mean a 24/7 YouTube live stream made from uploaded files, that is a separate setup.

Do I need to convert the files to one resolution?
No. A playlist is a collection of individual videos, not a single video file, so its members can have different resolutions. For 16:9 video, 720p is 1280×720 pixels and 1080p is 1920×1080 pixels. YouTube Help says, “The YouTube video player automatically adapts itself to the size of each individual video.”

That means a 720p video does not become 1080p because the next playlist item is 1080p, and a 1080p video does not have to be reduced to match a 720p item. Each video’s available playback quality depends on its source and processing, as well as the viewer’s connection, browser, screen, and device.

How viewers choose playback quality
During playback, a viewer can open the player’s Settings → Quality menu and select an available option. Automatic quality may change in response to viewing conditions. Some higher-quality formats might not be available on every device or browser, and YouTube does not document a setting that forces one quality across an entire mixed-resolution playlist.
Upload resolution and bitrate: what matters
YouTube’s upload bitrate recommendations are guidance for preparing individual uploads, not a requirement for creating a playlist. For SDR video at standard frame rates of 24, 25, or 30 fps, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 720p and 8 Mbps for 1080p. Its chart gives different recommendations for high-frame-rate footage; preserve the frame rate at which the video was recorded rather than treating those standard-rate figures as universal targets.
If HD quality is not visible immediately after upload, allow processing time before concluding that the file or playlist is limited to low resolution. Uploads are initially processed in low quality, and HD or 4K versions can take longer.
If you mean a continuous live broadcast
Creating a YouTube playlist makes videos play in sequence for viewers; it does not turn local files into a live broadcast. A continuous live stream made from uploaded videos is a separate live-encoding workflow. YouTube’s playlist and playback guidance does not establish a specific method for converting those files into one live broadcast, so do not treat playlist creation as a substitute for setting up a live stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams the uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
