If you receive an unexpected call, text, or message saying someone has died in hospital, take it seriously—but verify it independently before forwarding it, sharing personal information, or acting on a request. Contact the hospital through a number you find yourself on its official website or on paperwork you know is genuine. A hospital may not be able to confirm details to every caller, so a lack of immediate disclosure does not establish whether the message is true.
How to check whether the notification is genuine
- Pause. Do not forward the message or act on requests for payment, credentials, identity documents, or verification codes while the claim is unconfirmed.
- Find the hospital’s contact details independently. Use its official website or authentic paperwork—not a number or link supplied only in the incoming message.
- Call the main number. Explain that you received a death notification and ask to be connected to the appropriate ward, patient affairs, bereavement, or records contact. There is no single contact title or procedure that applies to every hospital.
- Ask what can be confirmed and what steps apply. Be ready to explain your relationship to the person and provide details the hospital needs to identify the situation. Privacy rules and the circumstances may limit what staff can disclose.
- Keep a record. Save the message and note the caller’s claimed name, the time, the number used, and anything they asked you to do. These details may help the hospital or local authorities assess the contact.
If the hospital cannot confirm the information on the first call, ask which official contact or process to use next. Do not treat either a refusal or inability to disclose details as proof that the notification is true or false.

Why a hospital may not confirm details to you
Hospitals must follow applicable privacy rules, and who may be told what depends on the jurisdiction and the circumstances. In the United States, the Department of Health and Human Services says the HIPAA Privacy Rule permits covered entities to notify or assist in notifying family members, personal representatives, or others responsible for a patient’s care about the patient’s location, general condition, or death in specified circumstances. When a patient can decide, disclosure generally depends on the patient’s agreement or lack of objection when practicable; when the patient cannot be consulted, professional judgment and the patient’s best interest may guide notification. What happens after a death notification depends on where it occurred
Notification, certification, and review procedures are not universal. The examples below apply only to the named jurisdictions; elsewhere, use the hospital’s official contact route and follow local procedures.

HIPAA provides the notification permissions described above, but it does not mean that anyone who calls a hospital can receive confirmation. The hospital’s response depends on the patient’s circumstances and applicable privacy requirements. The HHS HIPAA FAQ explains when covered entities may notify family members or other responsible people.
England and Wales
Since 9 September 2024, deaths that are not investigated by a coroner are reviewed by NHS medical examiners. A medical examiner scrutinises the cause of death and gives the deceased’s representative an opportunity to discuss it and raise concerns. The NHS England guidance describes the arrangements.

According to the GOV.UK guide to registering a death, a doctor confirms the death before the medical examiner is contacted. The process can take a few days; the medical examiner’s office then contacts the representative to explain the cause and answer questions. Some deaths must instead be reported to a coroner, including specified cases involving suspected unnatural or violent death, an unknown cause, or death in custody or state detention. If the story or the request seems suspicious
- Call the hospital using independently found contact details and explain what does not match or what the caller requested.
- Do not send money, passwords, identity documents, or one-time verification codes until you have independently confirmed both the situation and the requester.
- If accounts conflict or you remain concerned, seek advice from the appropriate local police, coroner, or other official authority. Which authority is relevant depends on the location and circumstances.
These precautions are sensible for an unsolicited message, but they do not mean that a particular death-notification scam has been established. A genuine notification may also be distressing or incomplete at first; verification through an official route is a reasonable next step.

Wait until you have confirmed the information through the hospital or an appropriate official contact before forwarding the message or telling others. Share only what you know to be confirmed and consider the family’s privacy. If you cannot yet verify the claim, say so rather than presenting it as fact.
