Choose a proxy when particular applications or supported protocols should send traffic through an intermediary. A “compressing proxy” is useful only when it can access compressible content; it cannot shrink arbitrary end-to-end encrypted HTTPS data in transit.
What is the difference between a self-hosted VPN and a proxy?
A self-hosted VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between a client and a server, then routes traffic according to the tunnel and network configuration. OpenVPN describes its Access Server as a self-hosted business VPN that can run on Linux, containers, virtual appliances, cloud infrastructure, or a physical server. Its product page describes private remote access as well as routing internet traffic through the server; these are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent security assessment. “Proxy” describes several architectures rather than one fixed level of coverage. A conventional forward proxy handles traffic from applications configured to use it. Other proxies support additional transports: Cloudflare describes its managed Privacy Proxy as a MASQUE forward proxy for TCP and UDP using HTTP CONNECT and CONNECT-UDP. The IETF’s RFC 9484 specifies proxying IP packets over HTTP and identifies remote-access VPNs, site-to-site VPNs, and general-purpose packet tunnelling as use cases. Can a proxy compress HTTPS traffic?
Not if it only forwards an end-to-end encrypted connection. In that arrangement, the proxy cannot read the HTTP response body, so it has no plaintext content to compress. A proxy that terminates TLS and establishes a separate encrypted connection onward may be able to inspect or transform content, but it also becomes part of the confidentiality trust boundary: its operator, software, and configuration matter to the decrypted traffic. This follows from how encrypted HTTPS works; the cited sources do not provide a measured bandwidth-saving figure for a proxy-versus-VPN comparison.

Compression also has a security caveat. IETF RFC 9114 warns that secret data can be exposed when confidential and attacker-controlled content are compressed in the same context. In the described threat model, an attacker can observe ciphertext lengths across requests; the RFC says implementations must not compress such mixed content unless they use separate compression contexts. This is a specific risk tied to the data and compression context, not a claim that all compression is unsafe. IETF RFC 9114, §10.6
Which should you use?

A VPN is not automatically the right answer for every proxy use case, and “proxy” alone does not tell you what traffic is covered. The actual scope depends on the proxy type, VPN routes, client support, and configuration. What should you compare before setting one up?
- Traffic coverage: Identify the applications, protocols, and destinations that must use the intermediary. For a VPN, decide whether only private-network traffic should use the tunnel or whether broader internet traffic should as well.
- Trust boundary: Determine whether the server handles only encrypted transport or can decrypt and inspect content. TLS termination changes who and what must be trusted.
- Compatibility: Check that the client devices and applications support the needed VPN or proxy protocol. Do not assume a proxy supports every application or that every VPN client can use a proxy upstream.
- Deployment and upkeep: A self-hosted service requires a compatible host and ongoing administration. OpenVPN says Access Server can be deployed on a physical server or in cloud environments, but its product page does not establish that any particular small computer is sufficient. - Performance for your traffic: Test with your own workload and network. The sources cited here provide no neutral, comparable head-to-head performance benchmark or general compression-savings percentage for proxies and VPNs.
Can you use a proxy and VPN together?
Sometimes. OpenVPN Connect documents applying a proxy configuration to a VPN connection profile, showing one supported arrangement. That does not establish that every client, proxy, or VPN combination will work.
