There is no reliable one-size-fits-all savings target for professional athletes. The right amount depends on how much you expect to spend after your playing career, what dependable income and benefits you can count on, and how long your savings may need to last. Estimate the gap between those expenses and income, then model how your assets and future saving could cover it.
How to estimate the amount you need
Start with your expected life after competition, not a generic savings percentage or headline dollar figure. The U.S. Department of Labor’s general Savings Fitness guide recommends estimating the retirement income you will need from savings after accounting for other sources of income, then working out how much to save toward that goal. It is general U.S. guidance, not an athlete-specific formula.

1. Estimate post-career spending
Build a realistic annual budget for the period after you stop playing. Include both essential and discretionary costs, such as housing, family support, health coverage, taxes, and any relocation or training needed for a next career. Consider whether your spending may change between the first years after retirement and later life.

List savings, investments, cash reserves, debts, and other obligations. Separate liquid assets that can readily fund spending from assets that may be difficult to sell or access. A large balance tied up in property or a business is not the same as cash available to pay next year’s expenses.

- Plan it, then live it: 50+ guided prompts help you decide how to enjoy retirement, including a 30-day retirement planner to turn it into real steps. Easy to start, even if you've never journaled.
3. Verify benefits before counting them
Ask the relevant league or plan administrator to confirm your eligibility and individual benefit record. For each pension, annuity, savings plan, insurance or health benefit, record vesting requirements, payment start dates, distribution restrictions, survivor options, and tax treatment. Use official plan documents: benefit summaries may be incomplete or unofficial.
4. Calculate the income gap
Subtract dependable post-career income from expected spending, using consistent assumptions about taxes. The remainder is the annual gap that savings, investments, or other resources must help fund. If a benefit is uncertain, do not treat it as guaranteed income until the plan confirms your eligibility and timing.

5. Model the gap over time
Compare the gap with your current assets and planned future contributions over the period you expect to fund. Make assumptions explicit and test how the result changes with inflation, investment returns, taxes, health costs, and a longer-than-expected retirement. The sources cited here do not establish a universal athlete savings multiple or withdrawal rate, so a single rule of thumb cannot replace a personal projection.

What NFL pension figures can—and cannot—tell you
League benefits can materially affect an individual target, but rules are specific to the sport, country, league, plan, and player’s record. The figures below are published by the NFLPA on its pension FAQ page and apply to the NFL plan context described there; they are not a general benchmark for professional athletes. Confirm current terms and your own credited seasons with the official plan documents.
| Credited season band | NFLPA-published monthly pension credit per credited season |
|---|---|
| 1998–2011 | $470 |
| 2012–2014 | $560 |
| 2015–2017 | $660 |
| 2018–2020 | $760 |
These are the season-band figures listed on the NFLPA pension FAQ page, accessed in 2026. They are plan-specific published figures, not a promise about what any particular former player will receive. The same FAQ gives an example of $3,600 per month at age 55 for a player with five credited seasons spanning 2016–2020. That is an illustrative example, not a typical or universal pension amount.

The NFLPA says vested players are entitled to monthly lifetime pension benefits at age 55, with the amount depending on credited seasons, when benefits begin, and payment form. That statement is specific to NFL plan participants. The NFLPA’s former-player benefits information also describes other benefits and resources, with eligibility and distributions subject to plan rules. Its benefits overview says the Benefits Book is an unofficial outline and that the collective bargaining agreement and official plan documents govern if there is a conflict.

Why one athlete’s target may differ sharply from another’s
- Career earnings and timing: A long, high-earning career may create more opportunity to save, but the target still depends on spending and how much income must be replaced after competition.
- Benefits and eligibility: A pension or other plan can reduce the amount savings must cover only if its terms, start date, and value are confirmed for that athlete.
- Liquidity and debt: Accessible savings can fund expenses more readily than illiquid assets, while debt payments increase the resources needed.
- Family and future work: Dependents, family support, a new career, or relocation can change both spending and the length of time savings must support.
- Risk and uncertainty: Investment outcomes, inflation, taxes, insurance, health, and longevity affect how much capital may be required. A projection should show assumptions rather than present a forecast as certain.
Choosing financial help and checking advice
For a personal estimate, consider an appropriately qualified financial planner and tax professional familiar with your sport and jurisdiction. Before engaging an adviser, verify relevant licenses and qualifications, fees, conflicts of interest, and the scope of advice. The SEC’s January 25, 2002 no-action letter reproduces NFLPA program materials that discuss factors such as liquidity, liabilities, diversification, risk tolerance, objectives, and tax, estate, insurance, and retirement planning. That letter is historical and is not a substitute for current rules or individualized advice.

The NFLPA describes a Registered Player Financial Advisor program, but the program designation is not an endorsement or recommendation of an individual adviser and does not guarantee results. Its application requirements and windows can change; the NFLPA application page says the initial 2027 application period has ended. Players should consult current NFLPA information for current program details.
If you play in another league or country, use that league’s current benefit and plan documents rather than applying NFLPA terms to your situation. The material cited here does not establish comparable current pension and savings rules across sports or countries.
