Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To validate a video, inspect its decoded frames and presentation timestamps, compare the timestamp gaps with the intended cadence, and review suspect frames. If you are measuring visual quality, first align the output with an appropriate reference and examine per-frame results—not just one clip-wide score. A metadata label or aggregate metric alone cannot establish that a file meets its delivery requirements.
What a frame-by-frame check can tell you
A file’s stream metadata describes properties such as its nominal frame rate, but validating cadence means checking how decoded frames are actually timed. FFprobe can report information about each frame and supports frame analysis; see the FFprobe documentation.

For fixed-frame-rate content, FFmpeg’s documentation describes a time base based on the frame rate and identical timestamp increments as the expected pattern. That is an expectation to test, not proof that every file should have constant spacing: variable-frame-rate material needs to be assessed against its intended timing. See FFprobe’s full documentation.
Frame timing checks can reveal irregular gaps, repeated timestamps, or a mismatch between frame count and duration. They do not, by themselves, tell you whether motion looks right or whether the result is acceptable under a particular delivery specification.

Set the requirements before measuring
Write down what the output is supposed to be before inspecting it. Include the intended frame rate—using the exact rational value where relevant, such as 30000/1001—duration, dimensions, codec, and any tolerances specified by the project or delivery platform. Treat these as requirements to verify, not facts established by the file’s metadata.
There is no universal acceptable frame gap, bitrate, or quality-score threshold established by the cited documentation. Use the applicable project brief or delivery specification for pass/fail limits, and record where those limits came from.

- Clearer Setup Results: This camera helps you check image sharpness and alignment during camera and lens setup, so you can fine-tune focus with less guesswork and get a cleaner view for routine monitoring checks
- Large Test Surface: the camera lens test chart measures 15.7 x 11.8 in and is made of paper, giving you a simple, easy-to-handle reference for lens calibration, image evaluation, and day-to-day setup work
- Easy to Use: Place the where you need a visual reference, then adjust the lens until the pattern looks sharp and balanced; it is a practical tool for common indoor or outdoor camera setup tasks without adding extra steps
- Helpful Visual Reference: the detailed makes it easier to compare clarity across different views, which can save time when checking focus, reviewing image quality, or confirming that a camera is ready for use
- Whats Included: You get 1 color test chart from IMIKEYA, ready to keep on hand for setup, maintenance, or replacement needs; a straightforward choice when you want a practical camera lens for regular use
Validate cadence and duration in sequence
- Identify the delivered file. Record its exact identity and the FFmpeg/FFprobe version used, so another person can reproduce the inspection.
- Probe the stream and frames. Use FFprobe to capture stream properties and per-frame presentation timestamps. Its documentation covers frame information and analysis; it does not prescribe one universal report format.
- Compare successive timestamps. Calculate the difference between each frame’s presentation timestamp and the next. For fixed-rate material, compare each interval with the intended frame interval. Flag gaps, repeated timestamps, and irregular spacing for investigation rather than silently normalizing them.
- Check frame count against duration. Compare the decoded frame count and presentation-time span with the intended duration and cadence. Check the beginning and end as well as the middle; endpoint discrepancies can matter too.
- Inspect flagged frames visually. Review the reported frames and their neighbors for repeated images, missing content, corruption, freezes, or a change in cadence. An automated timing anomaly is a reason to investigate, not a verdict on visual acceptability.
- Document observations and limits. Keep the source and output identities, tool version, intended rate, timing observations, any visual findings, and the specification or brief used for acceptance criteria.
Account for frame-rate conversion
Frame-rate conversion can change the decoded sequence: FFmpeg documents that output frame-rate conversion may duplicate or drop frames. A file can therefore report a nominal output rate while containing altered frame content. Verify the delivered output after processing rather than assuming the conversion behaved as intended. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Stream-copy mode does not perform that frame-rate conversion. The FFmpeg documentation also warns that setting a frame rate inconsistent with packet timestamps may produce an invalid file. The relevant check is the output’s actual frame timing and content, not just the command’s requested setting.

Choose the check that answers your question
| Approach | Best for | Compare | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFprobe metadata and timestamp inspection | Cadence, frame count, stream properties, and timing anomalies | Intended frame interval against per-frame presentation timestamps and count | Does not judge perceptual quality or delivery acceptability by itself |
| Reference-based quality analysis with FFmpeg filters or VMAF tooling | Quality changes between a source/reference and an output | Aligned corresponding frames, per-frame metric behavior, and the documented project tolerance | Sensitive to alignment and processing choices; a score alone is not a universal verdict |
Use quality metrics only on aligned frames
Pixel-difference and perceptual scores are meaningful only when the frames being compared correspond appropriately. If the output has shifted timing or a different frame sequence, a score may reflect misalignment as well as actual quality change. Review per-frame results and their distribution, not only a clip-level summary.
FFmpeg filter behavior can itself drop frames under some matching conditions, so check the comparison setup and resulting frame pairing. The FFmpeg filters documentation describes filter behavior, while the GStreamer VMAF element documentation describes VMAF as a combination of component metrics and supports frame-level messages when enabled. Neither establishes a universal pass threshold.

Interpret the results by frame-rate mode
- Constant-frame-rate source or delivery: compare every timestamp increment with the expected interval and investigate unusual gaps or repeated timing.
- Variable-frame-rate material: evaluate timestamps against the intended timing profile and application requirements. A nominal or average rate does not describe every frame interval.
- Rate-converted output: determine whether frames were duplicated or dropped, then judge the delivered sequence and timing against the requirements.
- Quality analysis: confirm reference alignment, inspect per-frame behavior, and apply only a threshold documented for the project or delivery specification.
What to include in a validation report
A useful report lets someone else understand what was checked and what the result means. Record the source and output file identities; tool and version; intended rate, duration, and other relevant requirements; observed timestamp pattern and frame count; visual review findings; reference and alignment method if quality metrics were used; metric name and per-frame observations; and the source of any acceptance threshold. Separate measured observations from the project’s pass/fail judgment.
