Which Gears of War game should you start with?
For a first-time player, Gears of War: Reloaded is the clearest starting point. It is a remaster of the original Gears of War, so it lets you meet the setting and characters in the game that began the series. Xbox says it includes post-launch content, including a bonus campaign act.

The trade-off is that you are playing an older story and game design, even in remastered form. If that is what has made you hesitate, you can start with E-Day instead—but doing so means the series introduces its world in a different order from its original release.
Should you play in chronological order?
E-Day is a prequel, not a continuation after Gears 5. Xbox describes it as taking place fourteen years before the original Gears of War, following Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust first emerge. That makes it the earlier point in the fictional chronology of these two games.

Xbox’s official materials establish the prequel relationship but do not prescribe one universal order. The choice is therefore about what you value more: the series’ original introduction or fictional chronology. The available official information here does not establish a complete campaign sequence for every numbered game and spin-off, so this guide sticks to the choice between the original and E-Day.
Where and when can you play E-Day?
As of October 4, 2026, Xbox lists Gears of War: E-Day for October 6, 2026. Xbox reported early access beginning October 1, ahead of the worldwide launch. The game is listed for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Steam. Xbox also says it is available on day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Check the current store and plan terms for your region before relying on subscription access.

Gears of War: Reloaded launched on August 26, 2025. Xbox lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5, and Steam. It was available with Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch; that launch information does not guarantee it remains in a subscription catalog now, so check current availability before choosing how to access it.

Is anything else required before you play?
No companion book is identified as necessary background. Xbox describes The Art and Making of Gears of War: E-Day as an official companion with developer interviews covering art, story, sound, and design. It is optional behind-the-scenes material, not a prerequisite for understanding the game.
