Some table fans have parts that can be removed and washed; others must not be taken apart. Keep water away from the motor and electrical parts, and let any washed components dry completely before reassembly.
Before you start: check whether your fan can be opened
There is no universal table-fan disassembly method. Follow the manual for your exact model, especially before loosening a screw, grille fastener, or blade spinner. If the manual does not describe grille removal, do not force the grille off.

This distinction matters: Bestron’s 18 March 2025 safety notice for the DDF35W says, “Never remove the fan protective grille to clean the blades.” By contrast, Blueair’s tabletop-fan instructions describe removing specified parts, and a Zilan 12-inch table-fan manual gives its own grille and blade procedure. Those instructions apply to their named models, not to other fans.

- Switch it off and unplug it. Disconnect it from the outlet before cleaning or removing any part. Put the fan on a stable surface.
- Check the model’s cleaning instructions. Confirm whether the grille and blade are owner-removable, which fasteners to use, and which parts may be wiped or washed. Use a screwdriver only if the manual calls for one.
- If parts are not removable, clean only reachable areas. Where the manual allows, remove dust from the guard and accessible blade surfaces with a soft cloth or vacuum brush attachment. Tefal’s guidance for its Essential + Table VF2330 calls for a slightly damp cloth on the unit and vacuuming the front grille; it also warns against letting water enter and against abrasive cleaners. Keep liquid away from the motor and controls.
- If removal is allowed, follow the model’s exact sequence. Clean only the parts identified in its instructions, using the stated method. Some manufacturer guidance allows mild detergent and water on designated grille and blade parts; other instructions call for wiping instead. Do not immerse the assembled fan or motor housing.
- Dry and reassemble as directed. Let washed parts dry completely. Refit them in the manual’s order and make sure they are properly secured before plugging in or using the fan.
Why fasteners and cleaning methods vary
Even the direction to loosen a blade fastener is model-specific. The Zilan 12-inch table-fan manual says its spinner is reverse-threaded and turns clockwise for removal. Do not assume your fan uses the same direction; use the instructions for your model and stop if a part will not release as described.

Manufacturer guidance also differs on whether removable parts may be washed. Bionaire’s guidance for covered stand, table, and wall-mount fan categories permits immersing the grille and blade in mild detergent and water, followed by complete drying. Blueair likewise describes washing specified parts and drying them fully. Those examples do not authorize washing parts on a different fan.
If the grille cannot be removed
Do not pry it open to reach hidden dust. Use only the accessible-cleaning method allowed by the manual—for example, a soft cloth or vacuum brush attachment on the guard and reachable blade areas. The Hampton Bay TX-1204D manual says internal parts are not intended to be disassembled for cleaning and describes removing dust from the guard and blades with a small vacuum.

If the manual is missing, look up the instructions using the make and model printed on the fan or its label. Until you can verify the procedure, stick to unplugged, external dusting and avoid liquids. Do not guess at fastener directions or wash parts whose care instructions you cannot confirm.
What to avoid
- Cleaning while the fan is plugged in, even if its switch is off.
- Forcing a grille, blade, or fastener that the model instructions do not identify as removable.
- Letting water enter the motor housing, controls, or other electrical areas.
- Using abrasive cleaners where the manufacturer warns against them.
- Reassembling or powering the fan while a washable part is wet or a guard is not properly fitted.
Tools you may need
A soft cloth and a vacuum brush attachment are sufficient for many external cleaning jobs when the manual permits them. A screwdriver is only needed for models whose instructions specify one. Routine dust removal does not, by itself, require a specialized cleaner, lubricant, or replacement part.
