That is the current starting point recommended for Zoroark. The set gives reliable Dark-type pressure plus a distinct Poison charged-move threat, but it does not fix Zoroark’s defining problem: extremely low bulk. Zoroark works best as a shield-supported pressure attacker, closer, or carefully timed switch—not as a Pokémon that repeatedly absorbs neutral charged attacks.
The short answer: build Zoroark for pressure, not durability
Zoroark’s default PvP plan is straightforward: reach charged moves quickly with Sucker Punch, use Foul Play as the dependable Dark attack, and keep Sludge Bomb available to punish targets that resist or expect Dark damage. The opponent must respect two different charged-move possibilities, which creates opportunities for correct shield calls and occasional baits.

That pressure comes with a severe durability cost. iTechGuides identifies Zoroark’s very low bulk as the central reason it struggles in PvP. A Zoroark that enters the wrong alignment can be knocked out before it creates meaningful value, even if its moveset is technically optimal. Your team therefore has to provide the bulk, resistances, or alignment that Zoroark lacks.

Recommended moveset in Great and Ultra League
Pokémon GO Hub recommends the same three-move set for Great League and Ultra League. The site’s move table also lists Shadow Claw and Snarl as alternative fast attacks, with Flamethrower, Sludge Bomb, Night Shade, and Foul Play among the charged attacks. Those alternatives can have a place in a restricted cup or a deliberately specialized team, but the cited all-purpose starting point remains Sucker Punch, Foul Play, and Sludge Bomb.
| Slot | Recommended choice | How to use it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast move | Sucker Punch | Build energy while applying steady Dark-type pressure. | It supports the two-charged-move pressure plan without asking Zoroark to win through raw durability. |
| Charged move 1 | Foul Play | Use when dependable Dark damage is the correct way to finish or heavily damage the opponent. | It is the set’s reliable, repeatable Dark-type threat. |
| Charged move 2 | Sludge Bomb | Show the Poison threat when the target is vulnerable to it or when the opponent must respect a second damage profile. | It prevents the opponent from treating every charged move as the same Dark-type attack. |
The set should be viewed as a pressure package, not as proof that Zoroark is broadly strong. Pokémon GO Hub’s cited Great League snapshot places Zoroark at rank 655 out of 1,153, with a PvPoke score of 72.2 and a tier-D classification. That is specialist or spice-pick territory: worthwhile when your team specifically benefits from its angles, but not a default meta core.
Great League build and IV considerations
The cited Great League stat-product example is 1 Attack, 15 Defense, 15 Stamina at level 21.5 and 1,496 CP. This is an example of a bulk-oriented Great League spread, not a guarantee that every account should use those exact IVs. Zoroark’s low overall bulk means additional defensive and stamina points can matter when they change whether it survives a fast-move sequence or reaches another charged move.
Before investing, check the exact league and cup in which you intend to use Zoroark. A specimen optimized near Great League’s CP cap is not automatically the best choice for Ultra League. Compare candidates with a current in-game appraisal and a reputable ranking tool, then verify that the resulting CP fits the league limit. The cited 1,496-CP example is specifically a Great League reference.
What to prioritize when choosing between candidates
- Bulk first: when two candidates have similar CP and move access, prefer the one that preserves more Defense and Stamina for the intended league.
- League fit: do not power up a candidate for Ultra League before confirming its final CP and level.
- Team breakpoint needs: if a particular matchup is central to your team, test whether an individual candidate survives the relevant attacks; do not assume the Great League example covers every scenario.
- Resource cost: Zoroark is a specialist investment. Secure the rest of your team’s core coverage before spending scarce resources on a marginal upgrade.
Foul Play, Sludge Bomb, and the correct way to bait
Foul Play is the dependable Dark-type charged attack in this build. Sludge Bomb gives Zoroark a separate Poison-type damage profile and makes the opponent consider more than one shield response. That distinction is useful only when the opponent has a reason to respect both moves; pressing a bait button automatically is not a strategy.
When a bait is credible
Start with the opponent’s actual decision. Ask whether shielding a possible Foul Play or Sludge Bomb is necessary to avoid a knockout, a severe drop in health, or the loss of a key alignment. A bait is strongest when both charged moves could materially change the matchup and the opponent cannot safely ignore either one.

If the opponent has two shields and your current move is not lethal, a lower-cost throw can test whether they are willing to protect the matchup. The purpose is to gain information or preserve your own shield advantage, not merely to make the opponent spend a shield. If the opponent shields, Zoroark may gain a later opportunity to land the more damaging move; if the opponent correctly declines, you have still spent energy and may have shortened Zoroark’s remaining life.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen to throw the real move instead
Do not bait when the opponent is already at a decisive health threshold. If Foul Play or Sludge Bomb is the move that actually wins the exchange, use it. Baiting is also weak when Zoroark is about to faint, when the opponent has no reason to shield, or when only one of your charged moves reaches the required knockout. A fainted Zoroark gains no value from the possibility that a second move might have been shielded.
Track four pieces of information
- Your energy: know whether you can reach one move, two moves, or a move plus a fast-move finish before being knocked out.
- Both shield counts: a bait has a different value against two shields, one shield, and no shields.
- The opponent’s likely charged move: Zoroark’s low bulk makes an incorrect shield decision especially expensive.
- Health thresholds: decide whether the goal is a knockout, a farm-down, or simply enough damage for a teammate.
PvPoke defines its “Consistency” rating as “Rating of how dependent Pokemon are at baiting shields.” That definition is a useful warning: a high-value bait line is not a guaranteed sequence. PvPoke’s rankings are simulated from assumptions about moves and roles, so use them to form a plan and identify scenarios, not to promise a result in every battle.
Where Zoroark fits on a team
Zoroark is best treated as a pressure piece, closer, or matchup-dependent safe switch. It is not a universal safe swap. Its low durability makes alignment and timing unusually important, and a neutral charged attack that another Pokémon could absorb may remove Zoroark from the battle entirely.
Lead: proactive but volatile
A Zoroark lead can work when the expected field contains targets it pressures with Dark damage. The benefit is immediate shield pressure and the chance to establish energy before the opponent reveals a counter. The cost is that a hard counter appears before your team can protect Zoroark. If you lead it, have a clear response to Fighting- and Fairy-oriented threats and decide in advance whether you will spend a shield to preserve alignment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Safe-switch role: only with a defined exit plan
Zoroark can function as a switch when the opposing lead gives it enough room to reach charged moves, but calling it a safe swap overstates its durability. Use this role only if the switch creates a specific advantage: drawing out a counter, forcing a shield, or reaching a favorable energy state for the Pokémon that follows. If the opponent’s response can comfortably absorb your first move and win the next exchange, switching Zoroark in simply sacrifices it.

Closer: often the cleanest use
With shields removed or the opponent’s counters weakened, Zoroark’s two charged-move profiles become more valuable. A closer can choose Foul Play for dependable Dark damage or Sludge Bomb when the Poison profile is the better finishing line. This role still requires careful timing because Zoroark cannot afford to absorb an unnecessary hit while waiting for energy.
Partners and team-building axes
Build around three questions:
- Can a partner take the attacks Zoroark cannot? Prioritize teammates that provide practical answers to Fighting, Fairy, and other damage types that exploit its frailty.
- Can the partner cover Zoroark’s losing matchups? The team should have a plan for opponents such as Melmetal, Shadow Ninetales, Tinkaton, Cramorant, and Mimikyu, which appear among the cited Great League losses.
- Can the partner create shield or energy advantage? Zoroark is most threatening when it receives a shield, a safe farm opportunity, or an alignment in which both Foul Play and Sludge Bomb are credible.
A bulky teammate can absorb pressure while Zoroark is preserved for a later matchup. A partner with complementary coverage can force the opponent to reveal a counter early. The exact species should follow the cup and your expected field; the important principle is to give Zoroark protection and a reason to enter, rather than placing three fragile attackers together.
Matchups: what Zoroark can pressure and what threatens it
Pokémon GO Hub lists the following Great League examples for the recommended build. These are matchup illustrations, not guarantees: IVs, shields, energy, move timing, and bait decisions can change the result.
| Cited result | Examples | How to interpret the list |
|---|---|---|
| Key wins | Galarian Corsola; Altaria; Shadow Forretress; Snorlax; Deoxys (Defense Forme) | These are examples of targets the recommended set can pressure under the listed battle conditions. |
| Key losses | Melmetal; Shadow Ninetales; Tinkaton; Cramorant; Mimikyu | These illustrate why Zoroark needs alignment support and should not be presented as a universal answer. |
How to use the list in practice
Do not memorize the win column as a promise to stay in every time. A listed win can disappear if Zoroark enters down energy, faces a shield disadvantage, or is forced to absorb a charged move. Likewise, a listed loss may be playable if a teammate has already removed the counter, Zoroark has an energy lead, or the opponent has no shields.
Use the names as scouting cues. When you see a target from the win group, ask whether preserving Zoroark for that alignment is worth a shield. When you see a target from the loss group, avoid blind swaps and identify which teammate handles it before the battle begins.

Two shields each
With two shields available, Zoroark can play aggressively, but do not spend both shields merely to prove that it can survive. Use one when preserving a favorable alignment or securing a second charged move has clear value. Against an opponent with two shields, bait only when both Foul Play and Sludge Bomb are credible and the information gained can affect the next exchange.

One shield each
This is the most decision-sensitive state. Count whether Zoroark reaches another charged move after shielding and whether the opponent’s likely attack would remove it. If a direct Foul Play or Sludge Bomb wins the matchup, throw it rather than chasing a theoretical shield. A single incorrect call can erase Zoroark’s remaining value.

No shields
Without shields, Zoroark should avoid unnecessary exposure. Throw the move that produces the best immediate result, then switch or allow a teammate to finish if the opponent’s next charged attack is decisive. The value of baiting falls sharply when there is no shield left to influence.
Common mistakes and corrections
Using Zoroark as a general-purpose safe swap
Problem: Zoroark’s low bulk means many neutral or super-effective responses are too costly.
Correction: switch it only when you know what advantage the entry creates and which teammate handles the response.
Baiting every time you have two charged moves
Problem: a bait can waste the only energy Zoroark has before fainting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Correction: throw the move that reaches the required knockout or damage threshold unless the opponent genuinely has to respect both options.
Best Value
Treating rankings as guarantees
Problem: PvPoke simulations and published matchup lists use assumptions that do not include every IV, shield, lag, or timing situation.
Correction: use rankings to identify roles and likely lines, then adapt to the live energy and shield state.
Investing because the moveset looks interesting
Problem: an optimal moveset does not make Zoroark a top-tier generalist. The cited Great League snapshot places it at rank 655 of 1,153, with a score of 72.2 and tier D.
Correction: invest when you specifically want Dark pressure, unusual matchup angles, or a team built to protect a glassy attacker. Do not make it your first broad-meta investment.
Is Zoroark worth building?
Build Zoroark if you enjoy a high-pressure specialist and already have teammates that cover its vulnerabilities. Its recommended moveset can force difficult shield decisions, punish selected targets, and create closing opportunities that a bulkier but less flexible attacker may not.
Skip or postpone the investment if you need a reliable generalist, a universal safe switch, or a Pokémon that can absorb repeated neutral charged attacks. The available evidence does not establish a universal bait success rate, a team win rate, or Master League viability for Zoroark, so those claims should not be inferred from the Great League ranking or from a favorable matchup list.
Quick Recap
Pre-battle checklist
- Confirm that Zoroark has Sucker Punch, Foul Play, and Sludge Bomb for the league or cup you are entering.
- Identify which teammate handles Fighting-, Fairy-, and other attacks that exploit Zoroark.
- Mark the opposing Pokémon you want Zoroark to pressure and the counters you must avoid.
- Decide whether Zoroark is leading, switching, or closing; do not change roles accidentally after alignment is lost.
- Before each charged move, count shields, energy, health thresholds, and the opponent’s likely attack.
- Bait only when both charged moves are credible and the shield outcome changes your next action.
- Use published rankings and matchup simulations as planning tools, not promises.
