How to Use Your TV’s Game Mode Without Sacrificing Picture Quality

Game mode can reduce processing delay, but some TVs restrict picture settings. Set up the right HDMI input, adjust available controls, and calibrate HDR for your game.

Turn on your TV’s Game mode (or its equivalent) to reduce processing that can delay what you see while playing. Then adjust the picture controls that remain available, and calibrate HDR in the game and on the TV together. Game mode may restrict some image processing or settings, so the right balance depends on your TV, input, console, game, and room.

Set up Game mode on the right HDMI input

  1. Connect the console to the TV by HDMI and select that input. If a game feature is missing, check the TV’s guidance for that particular HDMI input and model. For HDR games, Sony specifically advises using an appropriate HDMI input: Sony’s HDR video game guidance.
  2. Choose the TV’s gaming picture mode. Look for Game, Game Optimizer, or the manufacturer’s equivalent. Names and menu paths vary between brands and model generations. LG documents Game Optimizer paths for different webOS generations in its Game Optimizer guide; Sony provides model-dependent instructions for Game or content-type settings.
  3. Check automatic low-latency behavior and available controls. Use the TV’s game settings to confirm the mode is active, then see which picture adjustments are available. On some supported LG TVs, ALLM set to Auto can prevent picture adjustments; LG’s customization advice is to turn ALLM off. That is an LG-specific instruction, not a universal step. If you disable it, check responsiveness on your own setup.

Adjust the picture controls Game mode allows

Game modes commonly reduce processing to prioritize responsiveness. Some TVs consequently restrict picture controls or processing options available in other modes. A greyed-out setting does not necessarily indicate a fault; it may be unavailable while the low-latency mode or an automatic gaming feature is active.

Start with the settings the TV exposes in Game mode. Adjust brightness and dark-area visibility to suit your room and the game, and check that important detail remains visible in dark scenes. LG’s Game Optimizer controls include features such as dark-room brightness, input delay, and game picture adjustments, but their availability depends on model and software. There is no one slider value established as best for every TV.

Get HDR looking right in games

  1. Confirm the console is on an HDMI input that supports the needed HDR feature. Check the input and model-specific TV guidance, rather than assuming every port behaves alike.
  2. Run the game’s HDR calibration, if it has one. Follow its prompts with the TV in the picture mode you intend to use for gaming.
  3. Compare tone-mapping options the TV actually offers. On supported LG TVs, HGiG is available among Game Optimizer tone-mapping controls. LG notes that HGiG can look darker than Tone Mapping On; neither should be treated as universally best. Compare highlight and shadow detail in your game and room. See LG’s HGiG guidance.

HDR appearance depends on how the TV and game handle the image together. If the picture seems too dark or highlights look wrong, revisit the game’s calibration and compare the TV’s supported mapping choices rather than copying settings from a different model.

Choose the trade-off that suits your setup

What to compare What to check
Responsiveness and picture controls Game mode prioritizes reduced processing delay, while some TVs limit adjustments in that mode. Check your model’s available controls and whether ALLM affects them.
HDR tone mapping Compare supported options in actual game scenes. On supported LG TVs, HGiG may look darker than Tone Mapping On.
Room brightness and dark scenes Adjust available brightness and shadow controls for your room, while keeping important details visible.
Feature support Check compatibility for the specific TV model, HDMI input, console, and game; menu labels and options vary.

Make comparisons using the same game scene and viewing conditions, changing one setting at a time. Keep Game mode if responsiveness is your priority; if a particular adjustment matters more, check whether your TV offers it without compromising the response you want. Do not assume a setting or menu path from another model will carry over.

If a setting is greyed out or a feature is missing

  • Confirm the console is connected by HDMI and that you selected its input.
  • Check the TV model’s guide for the supported input, picture mode, and feature; menu paths and behavior differ by model and software.
  • On a supported LG setup, if ALLM Auto locks picture adjustments, try turning ALLM off as LG advises, then check responsiveness and picture controls again.
  • If HDR is the issue, verify the HDMI input and redo the game’s HDR calibration before judging tone mapping.
  • If the connection remains a concern, check the TV and console’s cable requirements before buying anything. The guidance cited here establishes HDMI connection, not a universal cable specification.
