How to Connect Multiple HDMI Devices to One TV

Connect devices to separate TV ports when possible. If you run out of HDMI inputs, use a switch; choose an AV receiver when you also need audio routing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect each device to its own HDMI port on the TV if enough ports are free. If you have more devices than ports, plug them into an HDMI switch and connect the switch’s output to one TV input. Choose that input on the TV, then select the source you want on the switch. If you also need to route surround sound, an AV receiver may be a better fit.

Choose direct connections, an HDMI switch, or an AV receiver

Option Best for What it does
Direct connections Your TV has enough free HDMI inputs Each device connects to a separate TV port. You select its input on the TV.
HDMI switch You have more sources than free TV inputs Several devices share one TV input. Select one source at a time on the switch.
AV receiver You also want to route audio to speakers or a home-theater system Multiple devices connect to the receiver, which sends video to the TV and routes audio according to its capabilities.

Check your TV’s ports before connecting anything

Count the HDMI ports and the devices you want to connect, such as a game console, streaming player, cable box, or disc player. Check the labels beside the ports and consult the TV manual: one input may be designated for ARC or eARC audio return, and you may want to reserve it for a soundbar or receiver.

Port assignments are model-specific. For example, Sony’s guide for one TV model identifies HDMI 3 as its ARC/eARC port; that is not a universal rule. Check your own TV’s labels and manual. Sony Help Guide

Connect devices directly when the TV has enough inputs

  1. Connect each source device to a separate HDMI input on the TV.
  2. Turn on the TV and the source you want to use.
  3. Open the TV’s input or source menu and choose the HDMI port that device uses.
  4. If the TV lets you rename inputs, label each one with the connected device for easier selection later.

Menu names and steps vary by TV. LG’s connection guide recommends noting the port number used by each device and choosing the corresponding input from the TV menu. LG USA Support

Use an HDMI switch when you need more inputs

A switch lets multiple HDMI sources share one TV input. Connect the sources to the switch’s input ports, then connect the switch’s output to a free HDMI port on the TV. Select that TV input, then use the switch’s button or remote to choose the source. A switch routes one selected source to the TV; it does not show all connected devices at once.

  1. Choose a switch with enough inputs for your current devices, allowing for likely additions.
  2. Connect each source to a switch input and connect the switch output to a TV HDMI input.
  3. Select the TV input used by the switch.
  4. Choose the desired source using the switch’s controls.

Before buying, compare the switch’s input count and supported video, audio, and control features with the TV and every source device. Relevant features can include resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, ALLM, audio formats, ARC/eARC, and CEC. Specifications differ between models: Vogel’s comparison sheet lists switches with 18 Gbps or 48 Gbps bandwidth and varying support for features such as 4K/120Hz, 8K/60Hz, VRR, and ARC. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results. Vogel’s comparison sheet

Choose an AV receiver if you also need audio routing

An AV receiver can accept multiple HDMI sources and send video to the TV while handling audio for a connected speaker system. It adds configuration and compatibility requirements, so check that it has enough HDMI inputs and supports the video and audio features you need. You generally select the source on the receiver as well as the TV input connected to its output. LG describes this source-and-TV-input selection in its connection guide.

Connect a soundbar or receiver with ARC/eARC

If you want TV audio to play through a soundbar or receiver, connect the audio device to the TV’s port marked ARC or eARC, following both devices’ manuals. Enable ARC/eARC in settings if required and select the external audio system as the TV’s sound output. ARC/eARC ports are specific inputs, so account for that connection when deciding which TV ports remain available for sources.

ARC and eARC capabilities depend on the equipment. Sony’s guide describes eARC support on its documented model for up to 192 kHz/24-bit uncompressed multichannel audio; do not assume another TV or audio device supports the same formats. Sony Help Guide

For an ARC connection, Sony specifies a High Speed HDMI cable between the TV’s ARC input and the audio system’s ARC output. If either device does not support ARC, Sony lists optical or analog audio as alternatives. Check the requirements for your specific devices; a cable recommendation for ARC does not establish suitability for every high-bandwidth video setup. Sony USA Support

Use CEC for compatible remote and power controls

HDMI-CEC can let compatible devices share commands over an HDMI connection for common functions, reducing the need to juggle remotes. CEC must be enabled on compatible equipment, and its behavior varies. Manufacturers use different names, including Anynet+ (Samsung), SIMPLINK (LG), and BRAVIA Sync (Sony). Roku explains CEC and ARC setup in its HDMI settings guide.

Troubleshoot a missing picture or sound

  • Wrong source: Confirm the TV is set to the input connected to the device or switch. If using a receiver, check its selected input too.
  • Loose or misplaced cable: Check that cables are fully seated and connected to the intended ports. For TV audio return, verify both ends use the designated ARC/eARC ports.
  • Unsupported feature: Check the manuals for the TV, source, switch or receiver, and audio device. A feature works only when the parts of the signal path support it.
  • ARC/eARC or CEC not working: Confirm the relevant settings are enabled on both devices, where required, and that the connection uses the correct labeled ports.
  • Intermittent switching or control: Roku recommends checking settings, connections, device order, and firmware. Roku Support
