You can connect a Mac or Windows laptop to your iPhone’s cellular internet through Wi-Fi, USB, or Bluetooth. First make sure your carrier plan supports Personal Hotspot: eligibility, fees, and the number of devices allowed vary by carrier and iPhone model. Personal Hotspot shares cellular data, not Wi-Fi that your iPhone has joined.
Before you connect: check your plan and iPhone settings
- Confirm that the iPhone has cellular service, Cellular Data is on, and your carrier plan includes Personal Hotspot. If the option is missing, ask your carrier whether it needs to enable the feature.
- If your iPhone uses two SIMs, the hotspot uses whichever line is selected for cellular data.
- For nearby connections, keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on the iPhone and laptop. Apple’s iOS 27 guide says to keep the devices within 30 feet (10 meters).
- Remember that laptop traffic uses the iPhone’s cellular connection. Apple states, “You can only use Personal Hotspot by sharing the cellular internet connection on your iPhone. You can’t connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network, and then share that network with another device.” Apple Support’s Personal Hotspot guide has the current instructions.
Choose a connection method

Connect your laptop over Wi-Fi
- On your iPhone, open Settings and tap Personal Hotspot. Follow the setup prompts if this is your first time, and review or set the Wi-Fi password there.
- On a Mac, open the Wi-Fi menu and choose your iPhone. On Windows, open the available Wi-Fi networks using Windows’ usual network controls and choose your iPhone.
- Enter the hotspot password when prompted. A compatible Apple device signed in to the same Apple Account can connect without entering it.
- When finished, disconnect the laptop from the network or turn off Allow Others to Join on the iPhone. Apple says devices automatically disconnect when the hotspot is not in use to save battery.
Use Instant Hotspot with a Mac
If your Mac and iPhone are signed in to the same Apple Account, select the nearby iPhone in the Mac’s Wi-Fi menu; you do not need to enter the hotspot password. Keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on and the devices within Apple’s stated range of 30 feet (10 meters). Instant Hotspot is for Apple devices; use the regular Wi-Fi, USB, or Bluetooth setup for a Windows laptop or another non-Apple computer.

Connect with a USB cable
- Choose a data-capable cable that fits the ports on both your iPhone and laptop. Check the connector types before choosing a cable or adapter.
- Connect the devices. If the iPhone displays Trust This Computer?, accept the prompt. On a Mac, allow the accessory if asked.
- On Windows, install Apple Devices or iTunes for USB tethering, then connect the iPhone by cable.
A cable by itself is not enough for Windows USB tethering; Apple Devices or iTunes is also required.

Connect using Bluetooth
- Turn on Bluetooth on both the iPhone and laptop.
- On a Mac, use Bluetooth settings to set up the connection. On Windows, follow the laptop manufacturer’s instructions for creating a Bluetooth network connection.
- If the iPhone does not appear immediately, wait a moment and check that both devices still have Bluetooth enabled.
Fix common Personal Hotspot problems
Personal Hotspot is missing from Settings
Check that Cellular Data is on. If the hotspot option still does not appear, contact your carrier to confirm that your plan supports Personal Hotspot and that the feature is enabled.

The laptop cannot see or join the hotspot
Check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices and that they are within 30 feet (10 meters). Recheck the Wi-Fi password if the laptop asks for it. For a compatible device that still has trouble connecting, try turning on Maximize Compatibility in the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot settings; Apple cautions that this may reduce performance for connected devices.
USB tethering does not work on Windows
Confirm that Apple Devices or iTunes is installed and that the cable supports data and fits both devices. Accept the iPhone’s trust prompt if it appears.

You are unsure how much cellular data the laptop is using
Check cellular data usage in iPhone Settings. Hotspot traffic uses the iPhone’s cellular connection, so the amount available and any applicable charges depend on your carrier plan.
