If you can create a stream, add it in the Wowza Video interface, choose a processing region near your live source, connect a compatible camera or encoder, select an output mode, then share the hosted player page or embed the stream. The detailed workflow below follows Wowza’s published setup guides; availability and account-specific features should be checked before you build a production setup.
Before you start: check that Wowza Video is available to you
Wowza’s current documentation index describes its cloud-hosted service as legacy. That does not establish that every account is unavailable, but the published setup instructions alone do not confirm that new signups, particular regions, or all features are currently offered. Before buying equipment or planning an event around it, verify that your account can create a live stream and that it exposes the region, input type, and output mode you need. Wowza’s documentation index is the appropriate starting point.

The steps below reflect Wowza’s published quick-start guide, updated February 24, 2025, and setup documentation updated February 8, 2024. Interface labels or availability may have changed since those guides were updated.
Create a live stream in Wowza Video
- Open the live-stream workflow. In Wowza Video, go to Live streams, select Add new, then choose Go Live Now.
- Name the stream. Enter a title that will help you identify the event or channel in your account.
- Choose a processing region. Select a region close to the live source. Wowza’s guide says proximity minimizes network distance and reduces latency. Confirm that the region also offers the features you intend to use.
- Select the input type. Choose the option matching your camera, encoder, browser, file, or other documented source. For protocol-based inputs, retrieve the generated connection details from the stream details page; some supported cameras and encoders may use a specialized connection method.
- Decide how viewers will access the stream before completing setup. If you need a Wowza-hosted viewing page, select that option during creation. Wowza’s setup guide says a hosted page cannot be added after the live stream has been created.
Wowza’s quick-start documentation lists RTMP, SRT, RTSP, and WebRTC protocol inputs, among other supported source types. The fully configurable setup guide also lists stream from file, UDP, IP camera, and Wowza Streaming Engine inputs. What appears in an account can depend on service availability and configuration, so follow the choices actually shown in your interface. Read Wowza’s quick live-stream guide and the live-stream setup guide.

Connect your camera or encoder
For an encoder or protocol-based source
Open the stream details page and copy the connection information Wowza generated for the selected input. Enter those details in the corresponding destination or server fields in your encoder, then start the encoder. Field names differ among encoder products; use the Wowza-provided values rather than assuming a server address or stream key from another platform will work.
Wowza’s February 8, 2024 setup guide lists TCP port 1935 as the default for RTMP and TCP port 554 for RTSP. If your source uses a non-default port, include it in the source URL. These are details from that guide, not a guarantee that every network or account uses those defaults; check the current interface and source documentation. Wowza’s setup guide describes the supported inputs and connection configuration.

For an IP camera
Wowza’s setup instructions specify an IP camera source that supports RTSP and H.264. Provide the camera’s source URL in the relevant input field. Camera URL formats can vary by manufacturer, model, and configuration, so consult the camera’s manual or administrator for the exact path and any authentication details. This is a compatibility category, not a recommendation for a particular camera model.
For SRT or WebRTC
If you select SRT, use the connection method and values provided by Wowza for that stream. Wowza describes SRT as an open-source transport protocol designed for secure, high-quality, low-latency delivery over unpredictable network conditions; that is a description in product documentation, not a performance guarantee for every connection. For a browser-based WebRTC workflow, follow the account’s specific setup prompts. Wowza also documents a developer path for creating a WebRTC live stream through its REST API, but using the API is optional rather than necessary for the basic interface workflow. See Wowza’s WebRTC REST API quick start.

Choose adaptive bitrate or passthrough
The output mode determines whether Wowza creates multiple renditions for playback or sends a single rendition matching the source. Check the current account’s eligibility, region availability, and settings before choosing; Wowza’s published guide does not establish a universal feature matrix for every account.
| Mode | What it does | Limits to check |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptive bitrate (ABR) | Transcodes the source into multiple output renditions at different sizes and bitrates so playback can adapt to a viewer’s device and bandwidth. | The number of renditions depends on source resolution and the documented configuration. Wowza’s setup guide gives six renditions for a 1920 × 1080, 16:9 source and seven for a source up to 3840 × 2160; these are configuration values, not playback or performance guarantees. |
| Passthrough | Sends one output rendition without transcoding, retaining the source rendition’s characteristics. | Wowza’s published documentation says passthrough requires a 24×7 subscription, is unavailable in some regions, and does not support 4K. Confirm current eligibility for your account and region. |
ABR is the relevant choice when viewers may have different devices or connection speeds and multiple renditions are needed. Passthrough is a narrower option for eligible accounts that need one source-matching rendition and can accept its regional and resolution limits. The published guides do not provide current prices, so check account terms rather than relying on an old or assumed rate. Wowza’s passthrough documentation explains its stated restrictions.

Share the stream with viewers
Wowza’s quick-start guide describes three viewing options:
- Hosted page: share the Wowza-hosted page URL directly with viewers. Choose this during stream setup if you need it; Wowza says it cannot be added after stream creation.
- JavaScript embed: use the generated JavaScript code to place the player on a site that supports it.
- iFrame embed: use the generated iFrame code to embed the player on a site that permits iFrames.
Use the hosted page when you want a direct destination to share. Use an embed when the viewing experience belongs on your own site, and confirm that the site’s content system permits the selected code. The exact code and URL are supplied by Wowza for the configured stream. The quick-start guide covers these delivery choices.

Stop the stream when the event ends
Wowza’s getting-started guide warns that transcoding charges can accrue after a stream is started even when no source is actively sending content. It says idle streams stop automatically after 20 minutes and recommends stopping promptly when the event finishes. Treat that timing as the guide’s stated behavior, not a substitute for checking current account terms or confirming the stream’s status in the interface. Stop the stream as soon as the broadcast is over to avoid leaving an unnecessary workflow running. See Wowza’s getting-started instructions.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The account cannot create a stream: Wowza’s documentation index calls the cloud-hosted service legacy. Verify current service access with Wowza before changing equipment or building a new workflow.
- The source does not connect: Check that the selected Wowza input matches the encoder or camera protocol, and copy the connection details from the stream page. For RTSP cameras, confirm RTSP and H.264 support and verify the full source URL against the device manual.
- A connection fails across a network: Check whether the source URL includes the required port. The setup guide lists TCP 1935 for RTMP and TCP 554 for RTSP by default; network rules or non-default ports may require different settings.
- Passthrough is missing or unavailable: Wowza’s published guidance restricts it to qualifying 24×7 subscriptions and selected regions. Check the current account and region; the cited guide also excludes 4K in passthrough.
- The hosted page option is absent after creation: Wowza says the hosted page must be selected during stream setup and cannot be added afterward. Check whether JavaScript or iFrame embed codes are available for the stream instead.
- Charges continue while no video is arriving: A started stream may accrue transcoding charges even without an active source. Check stream status and stop it after the event rather than relying only on automatic idle stopping.
When a cloud-hosted 24/7 YouTube channel is the goal
Wowza Video’s documented workflow is for a live source, processing, and delivery to viewers. If your actual goal is to keep uploaded recordings looping as a 24/7 YouTube channel, that is a different workflow. StreamNeo is a cloud service for that YouTube-only use: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer at home can stay off; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
Each slot supports uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. UPI is available in India, and cards are accepted in India and worldwide. StreamNeo does not broadcast from a camera and streams to YouTube only. To try it, start your free day with StreamNeo.
