How to Scale a Live Stream With Wowza Streaming Engine

Scaling Wowza Streaming Engine starts with measuring the real workload. Learn when to add repeater edges, use HTTP caching or a CDN, separate transcoding from delivery, and test capacity before an event.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scale Wowza Streaming Engine by finding the actual bottleneck, then adding capacity where it is needed: more origin or edge servers, HTTP caching/CDN delivery, temporary cloud instances, or—on a controlled private network—multicast. There is no reliable universal viewers-per-server number. Wowza says capacity depends on hardware, network configuration, stream type, bitrate, and connection type; load testing your own workload is the dependable way to establish a limit.

Start by identifying what needs to scale

Adding servers before identifying the bottleneck can increase cost and operational complexity without solving the problem. First map how streams enter Wowza, what processing Engine performs, and how viewers receive playback. The constraint may be stream processing, origin ingest, viewer delivery, or network capacity.

Inventory the workload

  • Source streams: Count concurrent encoder feeds and record each stream’s bitrate, codec, and protocol.
  • Audience: Estimate peak concurrent viewers, likely audience spikes, and where viewers are located.
  • Playback: List the protocols and player types viewers use, including whether delivery is HTTP-based, such as HLS or MPEG-DASH.
  • Processing: Record whether Wowza transcodes incoming video, how many output renditions it creates, and the target resolutions and bitrates.
  • Network and resilience: Measure available throughput and decide what should happen if an origin, edge, or network path fails.
  • Duration and budget: Compare the cost of maintaining peak capacity continuously with adding temporary capacity for an event.

Wowza’s scaling documentation includes example cluster scenarios labeled “up to 50,000 concurrent connections” and above that range. Those are scenario labels, not a per-server rating, a guarantee, or a substitute for testing your own configuration.

Do not assume one server has a fixed viewer limit

The same server can handle different loads depending on the streams, bitrate, network, connection types, and processing involved. Wowza’s official guidance says, “The only sure way to determine the limits for a particular configuration is to perform load tests that show when performance is likely to degrade.” That guidance appears in “About scaling in Wowza Streaming Engine,” updated July 22, 2026.

Choose an architecture for the delivery bottleneck

There is no single scale-out design for every stream. The starting architecture depends on whether Engine servers should deliver directly to viewers, whether a cache can absorb HTTP playback requests, and whether demand is steady or temporary.

Situation Starting architecture Main tradeoff
One stream and a modest, predictable audience One Engine instance, monitored and load-tested. Simplest to operate; capacity is limited to what that tested configuration sustains.
A large live audience delivered by Wowza servers One or more repeater origins, edge servers, and a load balancer. Adds delivery capacity and control, but requires routing and cluster operations.
Mostly HLS or MPEG-DASH viewers, especially during a bursty event HTTP Origin mode with a cache or CDN. Can offload HTTP delivery from Engine, but requires a compatible workflow, configuration, and cost review.
A short event that needs temporary Wowza capacity Add cloud Engine instances as edges for the event. Avoids maintaining permanent peak hardware, but cloud runtime and setup still need budgeting.
Viewers on a controlled private network UDP multicast where the routers and network support it. Routers provide fan-out; this is not a general-purpose solution for public internet viewers.

Build a Wowza origin-and-edge deployment

In a repeater architecture, encoders publish their feeds to origin server(s), and edge servers serve viewers. The origin can also perform transcoding. Rather than making each viewer consume the source directly from the origin, the repeater design reduces repeated origin work. Wowza’s overview describes a single connection per stream for each player type between an origin and an edge.

Plan the roles and viewer routing

  1. Send encoder feeds to an origin. Choose whether one origin or multiple origins should ingest the live feeds, based on the workload and failure plan.
  2. Configure edge servers to pull or receive streams from the origin. The origin-edge relationship is the core of the repeater deployment; edges then handle viewer delivery.
  3. Put a load balancer in front of multiple edges. It should distribute player connections and make it possible to add or remove servers. Plan how it detects an unhealthy edge and stops routing viewers to it.
  4. Test the complete path. Include encoder-to-origin ingest, origin-to-edge transfer, load-balancer routing, and playback from representative viewers.

Wowza’s current repeater setup documentation supports a primary origin and an optional secondary origin. The secondary is for failover: Wowza documents that clients may wait up to 12 seconds before failover to the backup origin. Treat that as documented behavior, not a guaranteed recovery time across every network, client, or failure.

Choose on-demand or persistent repeater mode

Mode How it behaves When it may fit Tradeoff to test
On-demand Wowza describes this as the default for Live Edge applications. An edge requests a stream when a player asks for it; the connection disconnects when it is no longer requested. When streams need not be connected to edges before a viewer requests them, or when quick configuration and scaling are priorities. HTTP segments are packetized on the origin, so edges share the same segment sequence and player migration between edges can be seamless.
Persistent Configured streams connect in advance through Stream Files or Java API methods. When streams should already be available at edges before viewers request them, or when multiple protocols are continuously requested. HTTP segments may differ between edges, potentially interrupting playback if a player moves between them. Wowza says persistent mode is more likely to use less bandwidth over a long period for continuously requested multiple protocols.

Neither mode is universally better. Match the choice to stream availability needs, protocol mix, bandwidth use, player migration, and how the deployment will be operated.

Offload HTTP delivery with HTTP Origin mode and a CDN

For HTTP playback, Wowza HTTP Origin mode can let caching proxies serve content instead of sending every playback request to Engine. Wowza explains that normal HTTP playback sessions have unique session IDs that prevent HTTP proxies from caching them; HTTP Origin mode is sessionless and enables caching proxies to cache and re-stream content. This applies to HTTP workflows such as HLS and MPEG-DASH.

What a cache changes

A caching layer can reduce the number of requests reaching Engine when HTTP player connections exceed what one server can handle. It does not remove the need to plan origin ingest, processing, cache configuration, or the audience’s delivery path. Check that the cache workflow fits the protocols and player behavior you actually use.

Wowza’s documentation names Amazon CloudFront as a ready-built HTTP caching proxy that can sit in front of an Engine server and scale automatically; it also names Akamai and EdgeCast as third-party CDN options. A separate Wowza developer guide describes a Wowza CDN on Fastly workflow: stream directly to the CDN from a Live HTTP Origin application, or send a stream to Wowza Video for transcoding and CDN delivery. These are documented options, not a claim that one provider is best or cheapest.

Compare the full delivery cost

Compare protocol compatibility, configuration work, audience geography, event length, origin protection, and service cost. Wowza notes that CloudFront may be costly for long periods of heavy use in one cluster scenario. CDN and cloud prices vary by service and workload; the available Wowza documentation does not establish current pricing or a universally cheapest choice. Estimate costs for the expected traffic and event duration before choosing.

Separate transcoding capacity from viewer-delivery capacity

Wowza Transcoder decodes incoming audio and video, then re-encodes outputs for target devices. If the Transcoder is under CPU pressure, adding edge servers that only distribute already-encoded playback may not address the limiting workload. Treat transcoding and viewer delivery as separate capacity questions.

Check the actual Transcoder workload

  • Count incoming feeds and the output renditions each feed produces.
  • Include codec, resolution, bitrate, and output keyframe alignment in the test profile. Wowza notes that aligned keyframes in output renditions support adaptive bitrate delivery.
  • Measure processing resource use separately from network throughput and viewer-side playback behavior.

Wowza’s current Transcoder guide says video scaling uses CPU by default. It documents supported NVIDIA CUDA and AMD Xilinx U30 acceleration options that can reduce CPU use for scaling, while noting platform and configuration limits; AMD Xilinx U30 acceleration is Linux-only. A GPU identifier setting does not itself provide automatic GPU load balancing. Confirm compatibility with the deployed Engine version and platform, then benchmark the actual profile before choosing or sizing acceleration hardware. The documentation does not establish a performance gain for a particular deployment.

Load-test the deployment before the event

Test representative streams and viewer behavior, rather than relying on a nominal server capacity. Wowza’s scaling documentation points to a load-testing guide using Apache JMeter, but the available sources do not establish a universal test profile or benchmark.

  1. Reproduce the workload. Use the codecs, bitrates, protocols, transcoding settings, and viewer geography expected in production.
  2. Ramp up gradually. Increase encoder feeds or simulated playback demand in stages so you can identify when performance begins to degrade.
  3. Track the right signals. Record server resource use, network throughput, startup time, buffering and errors, and the load level at which playback quality deteriorates.
  4. Exercise failure paths. Take an origin or edge out of service in a controlled test; verify that the load balancer detects an unavailable server and that the configured origin failover behaves as expected.
  5. Set operating limits. Use the results to define the tested workload you are willing to support and the point at which you will add capacity or reduce load.

Repeat the test when the stream profile, Engine configuration, hardware, network, delivery design, or expected audience changes. A test result applies to the workload and configuration tested, not to every future deployment.

Use multicast only for a controlled private audience

When viewers are on a controlled private network and its routers can be configured for multicast, UDP multicast can move fan-out work to the network instead of a Wowza server cluster. Wowza documents RTP and MPEG-TS over multicast and recommends RTP; its page notes MPEG-TS licensing requirements. This is not a general public-internet scaling method: viewers’ networks and routers must support the required multicast configuration.

Troubleshoot scaling symptoms by layer

Symptom Likely area to inspect Useful next step
Playback degrades as viewer demand rises, while ingest remains stable Viewer delivery capacity, edge count, load-balancer routing, or network throughput. Check edge and network resource use under load; add or route to edge capacity only after confirming the constrained layer.
HTTP playback requests continue to load the Engine heavily HTTP caching behavior or HTTP Origin configuration. Verify the HTTP Origin and cache workflow is configured for the playback protocols in use; test whether requests are being served through the intended cache.
Transcoding load is high even though delivery servers have headroom Transcoder processing rather than viewer fan-out. Measure the actual rendition profile and evaluate supported acceleration only after checking platform and configuration compatibility.
Playback is interrupted when viewers move between edges Repeater mode and HTTP segment sequence. Review whether persistent mode is producing different HTTP segments at each edge; test on-demand mode, where Wowza says segments are packetized on the origin.
Players wait during an origin failure Primary/secondary origin failover and client behavior. Test the backup-origin path and document expected client behavior; Wowza documents a wait of up to 12 seconds before failover, not a universal recovery guarantee.
A capacity increase does not improve playback The added capacity may not match the actual bottleneck, or the test path may differ from production. Recheck ingest, transcoding, delivery, network throughput, and routing separately with a representative workload.
