To send vMix to Wowza Streaming Engine, set up a live application in Wowza, then point vMix’s Custom RTMP Server destination at that application and enter the incoming stream name as the stream key. If Wowza source authentication is enabled, provide its source username and password. Start streaming and confirm the feed appears as active in Wowza Streaming Engine Manager.
Before you configure vMix
You need a live application in Wowza Streaming Engine and its connection details. The application URL tells vMix which Wowza server and application to connect to; the stream name identifies the incoming stream within that application.

- Server host or IP address: the address of your Wowza Streaming Engine server.
- Port: use the port configured for RTMP on your Wowza virtual host. Wowza’s default RTMP port is TCP 1935, but the server’s actual configuration takes precedence.
- Application name: the live application you created or selected.
- Incoming stream name: the name you want to publish under.
- Source credentials: the source username and password for the application if source authentication is enabled.
Wowza’s documented RTMP URL format is rtmp://[wowza-ip-address]:[port]/[application-name]. For example, substitute your own server address, port and application name; do not include the incoming stream name in this URL when using vMix’s separate Stream Key field. See Wowza’s RTMP encoder setup guide and publisher connection guide.

Wowza’s official RTMP encoder setup documentation says that, by default, RTMP-based encoders must provide a source username and password before connecting to a live application and publishing. Check the application’s source authentication settings and create or identify the appropriate source account. Use those source credentials in vMix if the application requires them.

Set up the vMix Custom RTMP Server destination
- In vMix, open the Streaming window using the cog beside the Stream button.
- Choose Custom RTMP Server as the destination.
- In URL, enter the Wowza application URL in the format
rtmp://[wowza-ip-address]:[port]/[application-name], using the host, configured RTMP port and application name supplied by your Wowza setup. - In Stream Key, enter the incoming stream name configured for the live application. vMix uses this field for the stream name (also called the stream or key).
- Enter the Wowza source username and password if source authentication is enabled and the vMix settings expose the relevant authentication fields.
- Select an appropriate quality profile and encoder application for your production, uplink and receiving application. Review the output settings before connecting.

Choose encoding settings for the receiving workflow
There is no single bitrate that is correct for every vMix-to-Wowza setup. Choose settings for the resolution and frame rate you are producing, the sustained upload capacity available to vMix, and the requirements of the receiving application and downstream delivery workflow.

|---|---|
| Resolution | Use the production resolution required by your workflow and supported by the receiving application. |
| Video bitrate | Set a bitrate appropriate for the chosen resolution and motion detail, while leaving reliable headroom in the available uplink. The cited documentation does not establish a universal bitrate for every installation. |
| Video codec | vMix’s streaming quality documentation identifies H.264 as the default format. |
| Audio bitrate and format | Set audio to match the production and receiver requirements. The vMix guide identifies AAC as the audio option for FFMPEG. |
| Keyframe frequency | vMix recommends a two-second keyframe frequency. |

Verify the stream at both ends
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the live application and go to Incoming Streams.
- Confirm the published stream appears with Active status. Open its details to review uptime and network throughput.
- Use Wowza’s Test Playback option if you also need to check delivery beyond the incoming connection.
- In vMix, open View Status for technical information about the encoder-side stream when diagnosing connection or output problems.
An active incoming stream confirms Wowza is receiving the publication; Test Playback checks delivery separately. The two views help distinguish a publishing issue from a playback or downstream delivery issue. See the Wowza RTMP encoder guide and vMix Streaming Settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a failed or inactive connection
- vMix cannot connect: recheck the server host, application URL and port. Confirm that the RTMP port configured on the Wowza virtual host is reachable over TCP from the vMix machine; 1935 is only the default.
- Wowza rejects the publisher: check the application’s source authentication setting and verify that vMix is using the source username and password, not viewer credentials.
- The connection starts but the expected stream is missing: confirm the Stream Key exactly matches the intended incoming stream name and that the application name is correct in the URL.
- Wowza shows no active incoming stream: compare the vMix destination fields with the application’s configured details, then inspect vMix View Status and Wowza’s Incoming Streams view.
- The stream is active but playback does not work: use Wowza Test Playback to check delivery, and investigate playback or downstream configuration separately from the publishing connection.
- Output quality or stability is poor: review resolution, video and audio bitrates, codecs and keyframe frequency against the production, uplink and receiver requirements. There is no universal bitrate for all deployments.
Or let it run in the cloud
This vMix-to-Wowza method publishes a live vMix production. If instead you want a pre-recorded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is a different option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
