This walkthrough focuses on Windows 11; the layout and some paths differ in Windows 10.
Get oriented on the Windows 11 desktop
After you sign in, the desktop is your main workspace. Microsoft’s beginner guide describes it as “your main workspace in Windows 11.” The taskbar runs along the bottom by default, with Start, search, and app icons; open apps may also appear there. The system tray area at the right contains status icons and access to Quick Settings. The exact icons and controls depend on your device and configuration.

Open an app or find something with Search
To launch an app, open Start and choose it from the menu, or type its name into taskbar Search and select the result. Search is also useful when you know what you want but do not remember where it is. Microsoft says Windows Search can return apps and documents, including files across the PC and OneDrive.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
Search results depend on what is indexed and on account or cloud settings, so a missing result does not necessarily mean the item is gone. If you know the file is in a particular folder, search there in File Explorer; if you want a broader search, use This PC instead.
Browse and organize files in File Explorer
Press Windows key + E or open File Explorer from the taskbar. Select a location in the left navigation pane, then open folders in the main area. Create a folder using the New option in the toolbar, or use the context menu where available. To rename an item, select it and choose Rename from the toolbar or its context menu.

Choose the search scope
- Search a folder: Open the folder where you expect the item, then type into the search box. This narrows the search to that location.
- Search This PC: Select This PC in the navigation pane before searching when you want a broader search across the computer. A broader search may take longer.
To move a file or folder, select it and use the Cut and Paste commands, or drag it to another folder. Be deliberate about the destination; if you are unsure, copy first, confirm the new copy is where you want it, and then remove the original. Microsoft’s guide to finding files and apps explains the distinction between taskbar search and File Explorer search.
Change a setting
Open Settings from Start or press Windows key + I. Use the category list to browse, or type a term such as “display” or “notifications” into Settings search. Windows 11 categories include System, Network & internet, Personalization, Apps, Accounts, Accessibility, and Privacy & security. Select the closest result and review the options before changing them.

Settings is a central place for device controls, but the categories and individual options can vary by Windows release and device. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Settings guide covers opening and navigating the app.
Use shortcuts when they are convenient
Shortcuts are optional. You can use on-screen controls with a mouse or touch instead; shortcuts simply reduce steps when you have a keyboard available.

- For a question about a particular setting, open Settings and select Get help if that link is available.
- For a broader problem, use Microsoft’s Windows help options or browse its Windows help and learning index, which groups guidance on updates, files, security, troubleshooting, accessibility, and hardware.
Windows 10 support status
This walkthrough uses Windows 11 paths. Windows 10’s Settings layout differs, so do not assume that every Windows 11 menu path applies there. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. See the support notice in Microsoft’s file and app search guide for current context.
