Could ClingSTUN Be Using Your Router as a Proxy? What to Check

ClingSTUN can turn vulnerable Linux routers and IoT devices into persistent proxy nodes. Check the exact firmware, investigate suspicious behavior and contain suspected infections.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ClingSTUN is a Linux backdoor that can exploit known flaws in internet-facing routers and other embedded devices, install itself persistently, and turn a compromised device into a remotely controlled proxy node. A device’s exposure depends on its exact model, firmware and reachable services—not just its manufacturer. Public STUN traffic alone does not prove infection.

What ClingSTUN does

FortiGuard Labs describes ClingSTUN as a back-connect proxy backdoor. After exploiting a vulnerable internet-facing device, it can maintain a foothold and let an operator use the device as a proxy. It abuses legitimate public STUN (Session Traversal Utilities for NAT) services to discover the device’s mapped external address and port and to maintain NAT bindings.

FortiGuard’s October 5, 2026 report describes exploitation of known vulnerabilities; it does not claim that ClingSTUN relies on a zero-day. The report also does not establish who operates the campaign, how many devices were compromised, or its geographic distribution.

Which devices may be exposed?

The report describes a campaign that changed its entry points over three observed periods. Early examples include Hytec Inter HWL-2511-SS routers exploited through CVE-2022-36553, followed by the EnGenius Enshare IoT Gigabit Cloud Service vulnerability CVE-2025-34035 and D-Link UPnP vulnerability CVE-2024-23625. These examples do not mean every product from those manufacturers is affected.

The report associates these entry points with specific CVEs and interfaces; it is a threat-research lead, not a complete product or firmware vulnerability catalog. Check the exact model and firmware against the relevant vendor advisory before deciding that a device is vulnerable or patched.

FortiGuard also reports that the malware contains exploits for seven vulnerabilities used in propagation. Its named targets include Realtek, MVPower, TBK DVR, Linksys, LB-LINK, China Mobile and KGUARD DVR products. This indicates potential spread to other vulnerable devices, not that every product from these vendors is affected.

How to check your exposure

  1. Inventory internet-facing routers, DVRs, cameras and other embedded Linux devices. Record each exact model, firmware version, owner and vendor support status.
  2. Check the vendor’s security advisories for the specific model and firmware, including the cited CVEs where applicable. FortiGuard’s report does not provide a device-by-device patch-status matrix.
  3. Identify management interfaces and services reachable from the internet. Restrict or disable any that are not necessary for operation.
  4. If the device is unsupported and its exposure cannot be controlled, isolate it or plan to replace it. A replacement choice must be model- and environment-specific; the report does not endorse a particular product.

How the malware persists and hides

FortiGuard reports that ClingSTUN copies itself to /root/.cling and /usr/local/bin/.cling, then adds startup entries to /etc/inittab, /etc/init.d/rcS and /etc/rc.d/rc.boot. It disables watchdog functionality, kills competing processes and clears its command-line arguments.

When running as root, it can copy selected process-information files from /proc/1/ and bind-mount /tmp over its own /proc/<pid> directory to make itself appear more like the init process. These behaviors can make a simple process-name check unreliable. FortiGuard also describes downloader variants that inspect /proc/mounts, unmount certain entries, kill associated processes and terminate processes whose executable path is under /tmp.

What STUN traffic can—and cannot—tell you

ClingSTUN sends standard 20-byte STUN binding requests to public endpoints and periodically sends a group identifier and mapped-port list. FortiGuard reports different endpoint requirements in two observed versions:

Observed version STUN endpoints contacted Success condition
One version described by FortiGuard Labs in 2026 24 At least half must succeed
A later version described by FortiGuard Labs in 2026 13 Every endpoint must succeed

Those are counts and connection conditions reported by FortiGuard, not prevalence statistics. STUN is used by legitimate services, so an endpoint or STUN request is not an infection indicator on its own. FortiGuard says these third-party services should not automatically be classified as attacker-controlled infrastructure.

The report describes a listener for a 20-byte operator packet. A command in that packet can cause an outbound TCP connection to an endpoint supplied in the message, after which ClingSTUN receives and executes a command. FortiGuard does not resolve exactly how the operator obtains external mappings and delivers control traffic through NAT. Treat recurring STUN activity as a lead to correlate with device processes, unexpected UDP traffic and unusual outbound TCP connections—not as proof by itself.

What to investigate on a suspected device

  • Unexpected copies at /root/.cling or /usr/local/bin/.cling.
  • Unfamiliar startup entries in /etc/inittab, /etc/init.d/rcS or /etc/rc.d/rc.boot.
  • Watchdog disruption, suspicious process termination, or process information that appears inconsistent with the executable.
  • Recurring outbound UDP/STUN patterns together with unexpected outbound TCP connections or other suspicious device behavior.
  • Relevant detection names reported by FortiGuard: BASH/Mirai.AEH!tr.dldr, BASH/Dloader.P!tr and Linux/Agent.BHT!tr.

FortiGuard lists the campaign download hosts as 124[.]163[.]212[.]119, 222[.]223[.]152[.]97 and 118[.]145[.]196[.]225. These host indicators and detection names can change or become stale; compare them with current vendor feeds and your own telemetry before using them for blocking or incident decisions. The report also lists file hashes and additional IPS signatures, but a match to one network indicator alone does not establish compromise.

What to do if you suspect compromise

  1. Contain the device. Restrict its internet access or isolate it from other systems, using a response appropriate to the device’s operational role.
  2. Preserve evidence where feasible. Retain relevant logs and network telemetry before making changes that could erase useful information.
  3. Investigate host and network evidence together. Check the reported persistence paths and startup files, watchdog and process behavior, and unusual UDP/STUN and outbound TCP activity. Correlate findings with device-specific logs and known-good firmware behavior.
  4. Apply the vendor’s fix for the exact device and firmware. If no supported fix exists, keep the device isolated or replace it when continued exposure cannot be controlled.
  5. Use an incident-response process suited to the device. FortiGuard’s report explains the malware’s behavior but does not provide a complete forensic-cleanup procedure. Installing a patch prevents or reduces exposure to a vulnerability; it does not prove that a device already compromised is clean.
