Turn it on in Settings > Cellular, then use the Phone app as usual. A working Wi-Fi connection is essential; Wi-Fi by itself does not guarantee that calls will work.
Turn on Wi‑Fi Calling for the right iPhone line
- Connect your iPhone to a working Wi-Fi network and open Settings > Cellular.
- If you use Dual SIM, tap the phone line you want to configure.
- Tap Wi‑Fi Calling, then turn on Wi‑Fi Calling on This iPhone.
- Tap Enable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions. Your carrier may ask you to enter or confirm an address for emergency services.
Carrier and country or region support are required, and account or plan eligibility rules vary. For example, AT&T specifies a postpaid wireless account provisioned with HD Voice; that is an AT&T requirement, not a rule for every carrier. Check your carrier’s requirements if the option is unavailable or activation does not complete. Apple’s Wi‑Fi Calling setup instructions and AT&T’s eligibility details cover those respective cases.

Make a call and check that Wi‑Fi Calling is active
Open the Phone app and dial a number or choose a contact as you normally would. When Wi‑Fi Calling is available, Apple says “Wi‑Fi” appears after the carrier name in the status bar; the indicator is also visible in Control Center. If you do not see it, that does not establish that the call will work over Wi-Fi—check the connection, the selected line, and carrier support. Apple explains the Wi‑Fi Calling indicator here.

When cellular service is available, iPhone routes emergency calls over cellular. If cellular service is unavailable and Wi‑Fi Calling is enabled, an emergency call may use Wi-Fi. Apple advises that traditional cellular or fixed-line service is preferable for reliable location information and that Wi‑Fi Calling should be a last resort for emergency calls. Do not assume a call will connect or that responders will receive a precise location.

Location information from the device may help emergency responders even if Location Services are off. Some carriers may instead rely on the address registered with them, so keep that address current: Apple warns that outdated address information may prevent emergency services from routing properly. Emergency alerts may also not arrive while the iPhone is connected to Wi‑Fi Calling. Apple’s setup guidance and Wi‑Fi Calling privacy notice explain these limitations.
Why can’t I turn on Wi‑Fi Calling?
If the setting is missing or activation fails, work through these checks in order. Apple recommends waiting two minutes between troubleshooting steps and notes that not all Wi-Fi networks work with Wi‑Fi Calling.

- Check that your carrier offers Wi‑Fi Calling in your country or region, and that your account and plan are eligible.
- Install current iPhone software, then confirm Wi‑Fi Calling is enabled for the intended line under Settings > Cellular.
- Restart the iPhone. If the problem continues, connect to a different Wi-Fi network.
- Turn Wi‑Fi Calling off and back on for that line.
- If it still fails, consider resetting network settings. This resets network settings, so use it only after the earlier steps.
- Contact your carrier if you still cannot enable or use the feature.

Apple says information about the country where a Wi‑Fi Calling-enabled device connects—estimated from its IP address or cellular network, as applicable—may be sent to the carrier for billing and service availability. For short-code calls completed over Wi-Fi or cellular data, Apple says the city from which the call is placed may be provided to the carrier for routing. Review Apple’s current Wi‑Fi Calling privacy notice and your carrier’s terms if you want more detail.
