To keep umux terminal work running after you close its desktop window, enable Storestation in umux Settings. In umux 1.7.0, Storestation moves terminal-session ownership to a headless daemon; use umux attach to reconnect later. Storestation is off by default, so closing umux without enabling it ends the app-owned shells.
Enable Storestation in umux
- Open umux Settings and turn on Storestation. The umux 1.7.0 announcement describes this as switching session ownership to a small headless daemon; it does not describe a separate daemon download. Read the umux 1.7.0 release announcement.
- Optionally enable the separate autostart switch if you want the daemon to start when you log in. The announcement says macOS uses a LaunchAgent for login startup. Autostart controls startup at login; Storestation is what lets sessions continue when you close the app window.
- Close the umux window. With Storestation enabled, the daemon-owned shells and their output continue running without an umux window open.
Reconnect to your sessions
Run umux attach to launch umux bound to the daemon’s live sessions. If the app is already open, the command focuses it. To inspect the daemon or its sessions, use these commands:

umux statusreports daemon health.umux status --jsonreturns structured status, including version, process ID, uptime, sessions, and attached clients.umux sessions listlists sessions owned by the daemon.
What happens with Storestation on or off?
| Setting | Session owner | Effect of closing the umux window |
|---|---|---|
| Storestation off | The desktop app owns its shells. | Closing the app ends those shells. |
| Storestation on | The headless daemon owns the sessions. | Closing every umux window leaves the shells and their output running; reconnect with umux attach. |
These behaviors are described in the umux 1.7.0 release announcement, dated October 2, 2026. The release is the source for the product behavior and does not provide an independently checked compatibility matrix.

Storestation separates terminal sessions from the desktop window; it is not a promise that work survives every interruption. The release says a clean daemon stop terminates all shells it owns. It also says a hard kill can leave a trail for the next start to detect and sweep. The local socket, rather than a PID file, determines whether the daemon is live. If the daemon is offline, umux attach reports it as unavailable and explains that nothing is running. The release does not claim that sessions survive a Mac restart.

Do not confuse session persistence with window restoration
macOS has a separate setting for whether windows reopen after quitting an app. On macOS Ventura or later, Apple’s path is Apple menu → System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Close windows when quitting an application. That setting controls window restoration, not whether umux’s daemon owns a live terminal session. See Apple’s guidance on reopening windows when you log in.
Apple’s developer guidance says, “It’s the responsibility of all apps to terminate any background processing when the app quits, or make it possible for a person to do so.” That is general guidance about making background work controllable; it does not independently verify umux’s implementation. See Apple’s documentation on making background activity visible to users.
