To make WhatsApp conversations more private, review Settings > Privacy first, then apply the right controls to each sensitive chat: Chat Lock for access on your device, Advanced Chat Privacy to limit selected sharing actions, and disappearing messages to reduce ordinary chat history. These settings lower specific risks; they cannot stop someone from preserving content they can view.
What each WhatsApp privacy control does
| Control | Exposure it addresses | Scope and who controls it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account Privacy settings | Profile and status visibility, read receipts, group additions, and unknown callers | Account-wide | Review each option rather than assuming its default is private. WhatsApp Help Center [c001] |
| Chat Lock | Someone opening a selected chat on your device; identifying notification previews | Per chat | Calls from locked-chat contacts are not blocked. WhatsApp Help Center [c003] |
| Advanced Chat Privacy | Chat export, automatic media saving, and Meta AI interactions within a chat | Per chat; either participant can enable it in an individual chat, while group admins control the group setting | Older app versions may still allow some sharing behavior, and participants can copy content they can see. WhatsApp Help Center [c002] WhatsApp Help Center [c006] |
| Disappearing messages | Routine retention of messages in a chat | Per chat, or as a default for new individual chats | Kept messages remain visible; a backup made before expiry may include messages. WhatsApp Help Center [c004] |
| App and account safeguards | Unauthorized access to your account or device | Account and device | These complement, rather than replace, per-chat sharing and retention controls. WhatsApp Help Center [c005] |
1. Review account-wide privacy settings
Open Settings > Privacy in WhatsApp and check the visibility and contact options individually. The Help Center identifies controls for last seen and online status, profile photo, About, Status, read receipts, who can add you to groups, default disappearing-message timing, and unknown callers. Menu labels or locations can differ by platform and app version.

Chat Lock adds an authentication step before a selected conversation can be opened and hides contact identity and message details in notifications. It can be used with group and muted chats. Use it when your concern is another person seeing a conversation on your device—not when you need to block contact or prevent the other participant from retaining messages.

3. Limit sharing within a conversation
Advanced Chat Privacy is a per-chat setting for reducing selected ways content can leave a conversation. When enabled, it limits chat export, automatic saving of media to a device’s gallery, and requests to Meta AI to answer questions or generate content in that chat. It applies to all messages in that chat while enabled.

In an individual chat, either participant can turn it on; in a group, admins control the setting. WhatsApp says, “All chats are private by default. Your personal messages are always protected with end-to-end encryption.” That statement concerns message privacy in transit; the separate Advanced Chat Privacy controls address selected sharing actions.
Update WhatsApp before relying on these limits. WhatsApp warns that people using older versions may still be able to share material outside the app, and you are not notified when another participant is on an older version. The setting also cannot stop a recipient from copying, photographing, or otherwise preserving content visible to them. WhatsApp Help Center [c002] WhatsApp Help Center [c006]

4. Set a retention period when old messages need not remain
Disappearing messages can reduce the amount of ordinary chat history retained in a conversation. WhatsApp provides timer choices of 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. A timer affects new messages sent after it is activated, not earlier messages. WhatsApp also lets you set a default disappearing-message duration for new individual chats.
Disappearance is not guaranteed erasure. Messages someone keeps remain visible and do not disappear at expiry; a backup created before a message disappears may also include it. Use the timer as a limit on routine chat history, not as a way to ensure that nobody can retain a message. WhatsApp Help Center [c004]

5. Protect account and device access
If your concern includes someone accessing your account or device, add the relevant safeguards rather than relying only on chat-level settings. WhatsApp lists app lock, Chat Lock, end-to-end encrypted backups, and strict account settings among its security measures. Its guidance frames strict account settings for people who believe they may be targeted by attacks. WhatsApp Help Center [c005]

6. Handle unwanted contact separately
Privacy settings can reduce visibility and unwanted approaches, but they do not replace controls for a person who is harassing or spamming you. WhatsApp recommends blocking or reporting unwanted contacts, limiting who can see your information, silencing unknown callers, and blocking high volumes of unknown messages. A recipient has a copy of material sent to them, so settings cannot guarantee that shared content will not be retained. WhatsApp Help Center [c006]
