Before buying a foldable phone, inspect how its hinge moves, check the inner screen in different lighting, and get a local repair estimate for the exact model. A crease is often a normal feature of a flexible display, but cracks, dead pixels, dark patches, unevenness, or touch problems are different. Manufacturer fold-cycle figures describe particular tests—not a guaranteed lifespan—and there is no universal failure rate or comparable current repair price across foldables.
How to inspect the hinge
- Open and close it through its full travel. Feel for smooth, reasonably even resistance and check that the two halves align as expected when open and closed.
- Pay attention to unusual movement or sounds. A small amount of movement, a curve, or clicking may be normal on some designs. Samsung says the Fold5 and Flip5 hinge has clearances for movement and shock absorption, and that friction can cause clicking or snagging sensations. - Compare two units if you can. A second example of the same model can help you distinguish a model’s characteristic feel from a unit that behaves differently. If the hinge catches, resists unevenly, or leaves the halves misaligned, ask the seller or authorized service provider to assess it rather than assuming it is normal.
What to look for on the inner screen
Crease visibility
A visible crease is a normal characteristic of flexible displays, and its visibility can change with the viewing angle and lighting. Samsung says the unfolded Galaxy Z Fold5 crease is not a defect because of the flexible Ultra Thin Glass design. Inspect the display under ordinary indoor light and direct light so you know what it looks like in conditions where the crease stands out. Samsung Gulf’s Fold5 crease guidance applies to that model, not automatically to every foldable.

Signs that need attention
Check whether the screen responds to touch and appears consistently bright. Samsung advises Fold5 owners to contact support if the crease looks significantly deeper or uneven. A crease by itself is not the same as a crack, black area, dead pixels, or touch failure; have those symptoms assessed before purchase.
Inner-screen film
For the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3, Samsung recommends leaving the main-display film attached and contacting authorized service if it comes off. Do not assume an ordinary glass protector or generic replacement film is suitable for a folding inner screen. Confirm compatibility and installation guidance for the exact model. What fold-cycle claims do—and do not—tell you
Samsung’s published figures are manufacturer test claims for named models and conditions, not independent estimates of how long a particular phone will last:

These figures do not establish a quantified chance of hinge failure or let you compare real-world longevity across brands. Look for model-specific warranty terms, protection limits, and repair access rather than treating a cycle count as a lifespan guarantee.

Check dust and water protection by exact model
Ratings and exclusions vary, so verify the rating for the specific phone rather than relying on another model’s specification. Samsung says the cited Fold3 and Flip3 models are IPX8 water-resistant but not dust-resistant, and recommends keeping them away from sand and small particles. Their hinge sweeper can reduce particle entry; it does not make the phones dust-resistant. Samsung’s Fold3/Flip3 guidance explains those limits.

Get a repair estimate before committing
Ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for a quote covering the likely expensive repairs, especially inner-display and hinge damage. Get answers for the exact model and your country or region; a quote for another model or market may not apply.

- What is the current out-of-warranty price for inner-display replacement and hinge repair?
- Are the display and hinge serviced as one assembly, or priced separately?
- Are genuine parts available locally, and are they in stock?
- How long does the repair usually take, and is a loan phone or replacement offered?
- Does the standard warranty exclude accidental damage, and what service route applies to a fault?
There is no comparable, current out-of-warranty hinge or inner-screen price established across models and regions. Motorola’s US support page says repair costs vary with repair type, service option, warranty status, and MotoCare plan; that describes its US support process, not a universal price or another country’s terms. Motorola US support provides model-specific assistance. For a repairability perspective rather than a retail quote, iFixit’s 2026 Fold8 teardown gives that phone a provisional 4-out-of-10 score and describes an extensive assumed hinge/display assembly repair path; it also reports scarce Fold7 replacement parts at the time of publication. Compare protection plans with paying for repairs yourself
Read the plan terms for your market and model before treating coverage as a substitute for a repair estimate. Check whether mechanical breakdown and accidental damage are separate, the deductible for each claim, any claim limits, the enrollment deadline, and whether the remedy is repair or replacement. Motorola’s US support material describes separate mechanical-breakdown and accidental-damage plans with device-dependent deductibles. Samsung links to Care+ support, but availability and terms need confirmation for the exact market and device. Samsung’s support page links to its Care+ information.

- Exact model’s dust and water protection, including exclusions.
- Warranty exclusions and local authorized service access.
- Whether hinge and inner display are repaired together, genuine-parts availability, and the local estimate.
- Protection-plan deductibles, coverage limits, and repair or replacement route.
- Your tolerance for repair downtime and an unexpected repair bill.
No universal best foldable follows from the available durability and repair information: the sensible choice depends on the exact phone, local service options, and the cost you are prepared to absorb.
