How to Use Webhooks for a Live Stream

A practical guide to live-stream webhooks, from callback setup and signature verification to lifecycle states, retries, idempotency, and local testing.

A live-stream webhook lets your application react when a streaming provider reports an event, such as an encoder connecting or a stream becoming playable. Set up a reachable HTTPS callback, verify every request using the selected provider’s authentication method, acknowledge it quickly, and process it idempotently—because retries and duplicate deliveries can occur.

What a live-stream webhook does

A webhook is an HTTP callback sent by a service when an event occurs. Instead of repeatedly polling an API for changes, your application receives a provider’s HTTP POST at a configured URL. It can then update a database, change a viewer-facing status, or enqueue follow-on work. The exact event names, authentication scheme, and delivery rules depend on the provider. See Mux’s webhook guide and its live-streaming guide.

Set up the endpoint and event handling

  1. Choose the provider and events. Identify which live-stream lifecycle changes the application needs. Keep stream lifecycle events distinct from upload or asset-processing events; they may have different meanings and handling.
  2. Create a reachable HTTPS route. Configure its URL in the provider’s dashboard or API. For Mux, webhook endpoints are scoped to an environment, so configure the endpoint and the live-stream resources in the same environment.
  3. Save the signing secret securely. Use the provider’s documented signature scheme to verify each request before trusting its body. For Mux, the create response includes the signing secret once; later list and retrieve calls do not return it. Store it when creating the endpoint. Mux’s webhook management guide says its API requires System permissions: reads need system:read, while create, update, and delete need system:write.
  4. Verify, parse, and deduplicate. Authenticate the request before acting on it, then parse its event type and identifier. Record provider event or message IDs so that a repeated delivery does not repeat the same state change or side effect.
  5. Acknowledge promptly and queue slow work. Return a successful response after accepting the event, then perform slower database operations, notifications, or media work asynchronously. Do not make the provider wait for work that can safely happen after acknowledgement.
  6. Test before production. Exercise verification challenges, ordinary notifications, invalid signatures, errors, retries, and duplicate deliveries. Configure and verify the production callback separately from local development.

Understand Mux live-stream lifecycle events

Mux’s event names describe distinct stages; they are not interchangeable signals that a viewer can watch or that a broadcast has ended. Its event list and webhook reference define these states:

  • video.live_stream.created: the stream resource was created.
  • video.live_stream.connected: the encoder connected.
  • video.live_stream.recording: Mux processed initial frames and recording started.
  • video.live_stream.active: the useful signal that the stream is playable. Before it becomes active, a playback HLS request may return HTTP 412.
  • video.live_stream.disconnected: the encoder disconnected, but the stream remains active during its reconnect window. Do not tell viewers the stream has ended on this event alone.
  • video.live_stream.idle: the reconnect window expired and the stream status moved to idle.

For a multi-destination broadcast, Mux also provides per-target events, including video.live_stream.simulcast_target.broadcasting and video.live_stream.simulcast_target.errored. These can support destination-specific status in your application interface.

Provider-specific security and delivery requirements

Do not treat “webhook” as one universal protocol. Mux and Twitch EventSub differ in signature format, verification flow, endpoint requirements, and delivery behavior. Implement against the selected provider’s documentation.

Twitch EventSub

  • The callback must use SSL and listen on port 443.
  • For signature verification, Twitch’s handler guide specifies HMAC-SHA256 using the subscription secret and the message ID, message timestamp, and raw request body concatenated in that order. Preserve the raw body for verification and compare signatures in a time-safe manner. Return a 4XX response for an invalid signature.
  • A new subscription sends a webhook_callback_verification message. Respond with HTTP 200 and the raw challenge string as the response body.
  • Acknowledge notifications within a few seconds. If processing takes longer, put the event into temporary storage or a queue, return 2XX, and continue asynchronously. Twitch can revoke a subscription after too many slow responses.

Mux delivery behavior

  • An individual delivery attempt times out after 5 seconds and is retried if unsuccessful.
  • Mux says unsuccessful deliveries are retried over the next 24 hours with increasing delay. These are documented delivery behaviors, not a guarantee that every event arrives exactly once or on a fixed schedule.
  • Duplicate deliveries can occur even after a 2XX response. Make handlers idempotent rather than assuming an acknowledgement prevents redelivery.

Test locally, then verify production delivery

Mux’s CLI can forward events to a local endpoint, replay events retained from listen sessions, and trigger synthetic events without creating real resources. The documentation describes CLI forwarding as a local-development tool with no delivery guarantees; production delivery requires an endpoint configured in the Dashboard. Mux also documents exposing a local route through a tunnel such as ngrok. Twitch’s CLI can test challenge and notification handling. Passing a local test does not establish that the production callback is configured or receiving events. See the provider’s Mux webhook guide and Twitch handler guide.

Choose the integration path for your provider

Implementation concern Mux Twitch EventSub
Events and lifecycle Live-stream lifecycle events distinguish resource creation, encoder connection, playability, disconnection, and idle status. EventSub uses provider-defined message types, including callback verification, notifications, and revocation.
Callback configuration Configure in the Dashboard or Webhooks API; endpoints are scoped to an environment. Use an SSL callback listening on port 443.
Authentication and challenge Verify using Mux’s documented signature scheme; the signing secret is returned on endpoint creation. Verify HMAC-SHA256 over the message ID, timestamp, and raw body in that order; answer callback verification with HTTP 200 and the raw challenge.
Acknowledgement and delivery Each attempt times out after 5 seconds; unsuccessful deliveries are retried over the next 24 hours with increasing delay, and duplicates can happen even after 2XX. Respond within a few seconds; too many slow responses can lead to subscription revocation.
Local testing CLI forwarding, replay, and synthetic events are available for development; forwarding has no delivery guarantees. The CLI can test challenge and notification handling.

These details are provider-specific, not defaults that can safely be copied between integrations. For current requirements, use the selected provider’s documentation: Mux or Twitch EventSub. The sources described here do not establish the exact YouTube Live notification or subscription workflow, so do not infer YouTube setup steps from either provider’s webhook protocol.

Or let it run in the cloud

Application webhooks are for reacting to a provider’s events; they are different from keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running. For the latter, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
