Check the incoming preview and audio in YouTube Live Control Room before selecting Go live. The replay must be cleared for every piece of content it contains, especially music and performances.
What you need before you start
- A computer with OBS Studio and the replay video file stored locally.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, plus a stable internet connection for the duration of the broadcast.
- Permission to stream the recording and all included music, performances, and other third-party material.
This workflow uses one local replay file. OBS supports formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. The OBS Media Sources guide documents the file-source and loop controls: OBS Media Sources.

Set up OBS to repeat the replay
- Create a scene: In OBS, add a new scene for the exhibition broadcast so the replay is easy to manage.
- Add the file: In the Sources panel, choose + > Media Source, create or select a source, and browse to the replay file.
- Enable repetition: In the Media Source properties, check Loop. OBS documents this option as off by default; when enabled, the file restarts after playback completes.
- Check picture and sound: Confirm the video appears in the scene preview, fits the intended layout, and that the audio meters respond during playback. Listen to the output rather than relying on the meters alone.
If the event needs a sequence of separate files rather than one replay, OBS also documents a VLC Video Source playlist with a Loop Playlist option; VLC must be installed. For one exhibition replay, a Media Source is the simpler setup.
Create and connect the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Schedule an encoder stream and enter its title, privacy, and other event details. Scheduling creates a watch page that can be shared ahead of time.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. YouTube describes the key as password-like: do not share it publicly or include it in a screenshot.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube if offered, and enter the event’s stream URL and key. Exact labels can vary across OBS versions; use the values from the current Live Control Room event. YouTube’s steps are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
- Start playback in OBS and choose Start Streaming. Wait for YouTube to receive the signal and show the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview, picture, and sound, then select Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready for viewers to see the event. YouTube recommends testing and checking audio and video before broadcasting: YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.
Do a complete rehearsal before the exhibition, including the start, a loop boundary, and the planned ending. This lets you catch a missing source, silent audio, or an incorrect event before the public broadcast.

Protect the replay’s rights
YouTube requires the provider to hold the rights needed to use live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. Its Livestream terms and conditions state that this responsibility includes rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A stream may be interrupted or terminated if detected material is not cleared. Even if you have a license, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel for the stream to proceed without interruption. Review Copyright issues with live streams and confirm permissions for the venue recording, performers, and music with the relevant rights holders. This applies to an exhibition replay in India as well; the YouTube sources cited here do not specify which additional India-specific event permits or music procedures apply, so confirm local requirements with the appropriate rights holders and authorities.

Choose how viewers will watch afterward
Live DVR and the post-event archive are different. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. DVR lets viewers rewind during a live broadcast, but its availability or capabilities may be limited on very long streams; viewers cannot seek to before the stream began. See Turn on DVR on live streams. If viewers need a full replay after the event, check the archived video after ending the stream rather than treating DVR as a substitute.
End the event cleanly
- When the exhibition is over, end the event in Live Control Room.
- Stop the OBS stream so the encoder is no longer sending video.
- Check the channel’s live or video listings to confirm the broadcast has ended and, if applicable, that its archive is available.

Troubleshoot common problems
