How to use voice commands with the Google TV Streamer remote

Press and hold the Google TV Streamer remote’s Assistant/Mic button while speaking to search, browse and get recommendations—no “Hey Google” phrase required.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To use voice commands, point the Google TV Streamer remote at yourself, press and hold its Google Assistant/Mic button, and speak while holding it. You do not need to begin with “Hey Google.” Release the button when you finish speaking and Google TV will process the request.

Google’s documented examples are content-discovery requests such as “What should I watch?”, “Find funny movies,” and “Show me sci-fi adventure TV shows.” The microphone in the supplied remote is all you need; a separate Google Home or Nest speaker or display is not required. Google describes this procedure for the Google TV Streamer (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV.

What you need before speaking

This feature depends on the voice remote being paired with a compatible streaming device and on Google Assistant being set up on the television. Google documents the voice remote for the Google TV Streamer (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV. The Streamer connects to a TV or other display through an HDMI input. See Google’s device overview for the compatibility context: Meet Google TV Streamer (4K).

  • A Google TV Streamer (4K) or Chromecast with Google TV
  • The supplied Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, with its microphone and Assistant button
  • A completed on-screen setup, including Google Assistant setup on the TV
  • A paired remote and an internet-connected streaming device so Google TV can search services and recommendations

You do not have to configure a separate smart speaker. The remote’s built-in microphone captures the request when you hold the button. This is a push-to-talk action: the remote listens while you keep the button depressed, rather than waiting for a room-wide wake word.

Keep the remote close enough to operate the Streamer normally and speak toward the remote in an ordinary voice. The documented procedure does not require opening a special search screen first. From the Google TV interface, you can begin by holding the Assistant/Mic button.

Find the correct button

Hold the Google Assistant/Mic button, not one of the buttons used for navigation or playback. In Google’s text description, it is the second button in the left column of the remote, below Back and above Mute. It may be identified by a microphone symbol or Google Assistant mark. The exact printed icon can differ slightly by remote revision, but its position in that left-hand column is the useful reference.

Pressing and holding is important. A quick tap does not follow Google’s documented voice-input procedure, because the microphone is meant to listen while the button remains depressed. The Back, Home, directional, playback, mute, volume, power and input controls have different jobs; none of those buttons starts the documented voice-command sequence.

If you are looking at the remote from the front, use the Back button as your landmark, then look immediately below it in the same left-hand column for the Assistant/Mic control. The Mute button is below it. This description is more reliable than trying to identify the button by color because remote markings and revisions can vary.

Talk to Google: the three-step procedure

  1. Locate the Assistant/Mic button. Keep the remote in your hand so your finger can maintain pressure on the button described above.
  2. Press and hold it. Start holding before you speak. There is no need to say “Hey Google” when you are using the remote. Google states: “When using the Google TV Remote, you don’t need to say ‘Hey Google’ before you talk to Google Assistant.” This wording appears in Google TV Help’s Meet the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote.
  3. Speak a question or command, then release. Say the request in a normal voice while continuing to hold the button. Release it after you finish; Google TV then interprets the spoken request and displays the result or performs the available action.

For the first attempt, use one of Google’s own examples: “What should I watch?” The request is short, so it is easy to tell whether the remote is hearing you. You can then try a search such as “Find funny movies” or a broader browsing request such as “Show me sci-fi adventure TV shows.”

Think of the button as a temporary microphone switch. Press first, speak second, and release last. Saying the wake phrase before pressing the button is unnecessary, and releasing the button before the final word can leave Google TV with an incomplete request. You can repeat the same three steps whenever you want to make another search.

Requests that match Google’s examples

Google’s examples focus on finding and browsing entertainment. They demonstrate the style of request to use rather than guaranteeing that every phrase will produce the same result in every app or country.

Goal Example to say while holding the button What to expect
Get a recommendation “What should I watch?” Google TV can present viewing suggestions available through the services and apps connected to your setup.
Search a type of movie “Find funny movies” The interface searches for titles matching the genre or description it recognizes.
Browse a combination of genres “Show me sci-fi adventure TV shows” Google TV attempts to show television programs matching both the science-fiction and adventure terms.

Use natural wording, but keep the request focused. A title, genre, actor, or recommendation question is less ambiguous than a long sentence containing several unrelated instructions. If the result is not what you meant, press and hold the button again and make a narrower request.

These examples are useful tests because each has one clear intent. “What should I watch?” tests recommendations, “Find funny movies” tests a descriptive movie search, and “Show me sci-fi adventure TV shows” tests multiple content qualifiers together. They are examples of supported request patterns, not a promise that every similarly worded command will be interpreted identically by every service.

Search results can reflect the apps and services connected to your Google TV setup. A title may appear with more than one provider, or a recommendation may be limited to services available in your location. The microphone is working correctly even when the resulting list is shorter than expected or a particular title is unavailable.

What the remote microphone can and cannot promise

Content discovery is the documented use

The official remote guide describes asking Google Assistant questions and searching for entertainment. The examples above are therefore best treated as supported patterns: recommendations, genre searches, title searches and browsing by descriptive categories. Results depend on which apps and services are available on your Google TV device, your account, and your location. Google does not promise that every natural-language formulation works identically inside every application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A voice result is not necessarily the same as a command sent directly to one streaming app. Google TV may show a results page, a row of recommendations or options from several services. Select the title or service shown on screen with the remote’s navigation controls if an additional choice is required.

Voice search is separate from hardware control

Speaking into the microphone is not the same as configuring the remote’s power, volume or input buttons. Those controls can be assigned to a television, receiver or soundbar under Settings > Remotes & Accessories, and their behavior varies with the device. They are not prerequisites for voice search. Google’s setup instructions for those controls are separate: Set up volume, power and input control on your Chromecast or Google TV Streamer Voice Remote.

For example, a remote can be able to search for a movie even if its volume buttons have not been configured for a soundbar. Conversely, correctly configured power or input buttons do not prove that Assistant setup or pairing is complete. Treat the microphone button and the hardware-control buttons as separate features.

A separate speaker or display is optional, not required

Google also documents voice-assistant workflows that use Chromecast or Google TV Streamer with a separate Google Assistant-enabled speaker or display. That is a different, hands-free arrangement: you speak toward the speaker rather than holding the remote. For the procedure in this guide, the remote microphone is sufficient. Google’s broader explanation is at Use your voice assistant on your TV with Chromecast and Google TV Streamer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not wait for a Google Home or Nest device to respond when testing the remote. The push-to-talk request is directed through the remote paired with the streaming device. Adding a speaker can provide another way to use voice assistance, but it is not part of the remote setup and is not needed to search Google TV.

Supported languages and regional limits

Google TV Assistant lists these supported languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Hindi, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish and Danish. Language availability is a Google TV setting and can depend on the device and region. Google also warns that features and services are not necessarily available in every country or language; a command that works in one market may return fewer results or behave differently elsewhere. The language and availability guidance is in Do more with Google Assistant on Google TV.

Language group Languages listed by Google TV Assistant
English and European languages English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish and Danish
Asian languages Japanese, Hindi, Traditional Chinese and Korean
Portuguese Brazilian Portuguese

Do not infer from this list that every Assistant action is translated or enabled in every listed language. Google’s regional availability warning applies to both features and services, including the content sources a search can display.

If a phrase is misunderstood, first check that the Assistant language selected on Google TV matches the language you are speaking. Then retry with one of Google’s short examples. A language appearing on Google’s list does not guarantee that every app, title catalog or Assistant feature is offered in that language in every market.

Pair the remote if setup did not finish automatically

The remote normally pairs automatically during initial setup. If the television displays a “Start pairing” prompt instead, follow Google’s pairing method:

  1. Move close enough to the Google TV Streamer or Chromecast for the remote to communicate with it.
  2. Press and hold Back and Home together.
  3. Continue holding until the remote’s light pulses, then follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Complete the TV’s Google Assistant setup when the setup flow asks for it.

Google’s complete setup sequence, including the pairing prompt and Assistant setup, is available in Set up Google TV Streamer (4K) and Voice Remote. Once the remote is paired, Google says remote software updates are applied automatically. Leave the remote paired while the device is set up so those updates can be delivered.

Pairing and Assistant setup are separate checkpoints in the initial experience. A remote may be able to navigate menus after pairing while still needing the on-screen Assistant setup completed. Finish the entire setup flow before judging whether voice commands work.

If the TV never shows the pairing prompt, use the on-screen setup instructions for the exact device you own rather than assuming that a remote from another product will pair in the same way. Google documents this voice remote for Google TV Streamer (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV.

If holding the button produces no response

Google’s published pages do not provide a complete microphone-failure checklist. Start with the two conditions that are explicitly part of the setup process rather than changing unrelated TV controls:

  • Confirm pairing. If the remote never completed pairing, repeat the Back-and-Home procedure when the TV shows “Start pairing.”
  • Confirm Google Assistant setup. Finish the Assistant setup on the TV instead of assuming that remote pairing alone completed it.
  • Hold the button continuously. Begin speaking only after the Assistant/Mic button is depressed, and keep holding it through the request.
  • Try a documented phrase. Use “What should I watch?”, “Find funny movies” or “Show me sci-fi adventure TV shows” to separate a recognition problem from an unsupported or overly complicated request.

If those setup checks are complete and the remote still does not react, consult Google’s current support instructions for your exact device and remote revision. Avoid treating power, volume or input-button configuration as a microphone repair; those functions are managed separately.

There is no documented requirement to say “Hey Google” as a diagnostic step. Adding it will not substitute for holding the button. Likewise, buying a second remote is not a first troubleshooting step when the supplied remote is already paired and undamaged.

How to make requests easier for Google TV to understand

Use one intent at a time

Ask for a recommendation, a search or a category in one sentence. “Find funny movies” has a single search intent. Combining a search with unrelated playback, account or device instructions can make the result harder to predict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Name the useful qualifier

Add the term that narrows the result: a genre such as “sci-fi adventure,” a format such as “TV shows,” or a specific title. Google’s own example combines two genres and the program type, showing how descriptive qualifiers can be spoken naturally.

Release only after the last word

The remote listens during the hold. Releasing before you finish can truncate the request, while continuing to hold after the final word gives the microphone time to capture the complete phrase before Google TV processes it.

Retry with a shorter version

If a long request gives an unexpected result, press and hold again and remove extra wording. Start with a title, a genre or the recommendation question, then add one qualifier such as “TV shows.” This keeps the second attempt close to Google’s documented examples without assuming that every conversational phrase is supported.

When a replacement remote is relevant

You do not need to buy another remote if the supplied Google TV Streamer Voice Remote is paired and working. A replacement is relevant only when the original is lost or damaged. Google identifies the replacement as a voice remote for the compatible Google TV Streamer and Chromecast with Google TV devices; verify compatibility with your model before purchasing. Product availability and pricing can vary by market, so treat a replacement as a hardware-recovery option rather than a requirement for voice commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A replacement remote does not add a different voice-command method. Once paired and configured, it uses the same physical action: press and hold the Assistant/Mic button, speak, and release. Check the compatibility listing before ordering because a remote designed for another Google streaming product may not provide the same controls or pairing process.
