The most effective way to reduce OLED burn-in risk is to limit how long a bright, high-contrast, unchanging image stays on the screen. Turn on automatic or adaptive brightness, use a shorter screen timeout, install operating-system updates, and let the display switch off whenever you are not actively viewing it. If an app must remain open, lower the brightness temporarily rather than leaving it at maximum.
These steps reduce exposure and slow uneven pixel wear; they cannot guarantee that an OLED panel will never develop permanent burn-in. The exact menu names depend on the tablet model and software version.

What OLED burn-in is
OLED pixels emit their own light. Over long periods, pixels that display bright, fixed elements can age differently from pixels showing darker or changing content. That uneven wear may leave a persistent outline of a toolbar, game control, navigation bar, status element or other static shape.
The avoidable exposure identified in manufacturer guidance is the combination of unchanging content, high brightness and extended time. A screen that changes frequently distributes use more evenly than one that shows the same high-contrast interface for hours.

Not every faint afterimage is permanent damage. Apple distinguishes temporary image persistence from burn-in on the Ultra Retina XDR display used by the iPad Pro (M4 and M5). Apple says temporary persistence can disappear after a few minutes of normal use, while more extreme, prolonged use creates the burn-in risk. See Apple’s display guidance (published October 29, 2025) for the model-specific explanation.
How the risk factors work together
Brightness, time and image stability are not separate checkboxes. A fixed interface shown briefly at a moderate level is a smaller exposure than the same interface left on for hours at maximum brightness. Likewise, a bright screen with constantly changing video does not present the same static pattern as a bright dashboard that never changes. The practical goal is to avoid combining all three risk factors whenever you can.
- Static shape: fixed white navigation bars, logos, gauges, game controls and status areas repeatedly light the same pixels.
- High output: maximum or unnecessarily high brightness makes those pixels work harder than the room requires.
- Long unattended periods: an app that keeps the display awake continues exposing the panel even when nobody is looking at it.
You do not need to avoid reading, gaming, maps or productivity apps. Change the conditions: use a comfortable rather than maximum brightness, allow the screen to sleep during breaks, and switch away from a fixed view when the task ends.

The daily habits that matter most
Use automatic or adaptive brightness
Automatic brightness prevents the panel from running brighter than the room requires. Enable it, then allow the tablet to choose a comfortable level. If your tablet lacks the feature or you prefer manual control, lower brightness to the minimum that remains comfortable for the current room instead of leaving the slider at maximum.
Brightness is especially important when a static app is open. A map, dashboard, point-of-sale display, reader, game HUD or video-control overlay can remain unchanged while you are away from the tablet. Reduce brightness before stepping away, or turn the screen off.
Shorten the screen-off interval
A shorter Auto Lock, screen-timeout or sleep interval removes unattended static content from the panel. Choose an interval that still suits your work, but avoid an unnecessarily long delay when the tablet is often left on a desk. Apple explicitly recommends a shorter Auto Lock interval for the covered iPad Pro displays. Google’s Pixel guidance recommends the default sleep timer or two minutes or less for Pixel phones; that phone-specific figure should not be treated as a universal tablet requirement.
If a short timeout interrupts active reading or presentations, use the shortest interval that does not disrupt that task and turn the display off manually during every break. The important change is eliminating long periods when the tablet is awake but unattended, not selecting a particular number that applies to every model.

Do not leave fixed high-contrast images at maximum brightness
Static white logos, black bars, bright status areas and fixed controls are all examples of content that can remain in the same pixels. You do not have to avoid these interfaces entirely. The practical change is to avoid leaving them displayed at maximum brightness for hours when nobody is looking at the screen.
Dark mode or an app option that hides controls can reduce the amount of light from some fixed areas, but neither is a guarantee. A dark theme still contains fixed elements, and any interface can contribute to uneven wear if it remains bright and unchanged for prolonged periods.
Keep the operating system current
Install available operating-system updates. Apple includes current iPadOS in its prevention guidance for the iPad Pro models it covers. Updates can change display-management behavior, so postponing them removes a mitigation the manufacturer specifically recommends.
After an update, check the brightness and timeout menus again. Manufacturers can rename, move or add controls, and an option that was enabled previously should be verified rather than assumed to remain unchanged.

Avoid heat and direct sun
Do not leave the tablet baking in direct sunlight or in another situation where it becomes unusually hot. Google includes avoiding direct sun and overheating in its Pixel screen-care guidance. That page concerns Pixel phones, not every tablet, and it does not establish a universal tablet temperature threshold; treat heat avoidance as cautious device care rather than a precise guarantee.
Heat avoidance does not replace brightness and timeout controls. A cool tablet can still experience uneven wear if a bright, fixed image remains on screen for long periods.
Do not install “burn-in fixer” apps
Google advises Pixel users not to install apps that promise to reduce or remove burn-in. This review found no official support for such apps as a remedy. An app cannot restore pixels that have suffered permanent uneven wear, and running a rapidly changing test pattern for long periods can itself keep the panel active.

How to choose practical settings
Start with the room in which you use the tablet most. Enable automatic or adaptive brightness, then check the result against a white page and a dark page. If text is easy to read, there is no benefit to pushing the slider higher. In a dark room, manually overriding the sensor to maximum brightness creates avoidable exposure.
For timeout, choose a value that lets you finish a normal pause in reading without repeatedly unlocking the tablet, but that turns the panel off soon after you walk away. There is no evidence here for one universal tablet interval. The “two minutes or less” recommendation comes from Google’s Pixel-phone guidance, while Apple’s advice is to use a shorter Auto Lock on its covered iPad Pro models. Treat those as product-specific instructions, not a performance promise for another tablet.
When an app has an “keep screen on” or kiosk mode, regard that as an exception requiring active management. Lower brightness before leaving the tablet, use the app’s own dimming option if available, and turn the display off manually whenever the information does not need to remain visible.

- Open display settings. Find the brightness and screen-off controls using the platform paths above or the Settings search field.
- Enable automatic or adaptive brightness. Move the manual slider down if the current room does not require a bright panel.
- Choose a shorter timeout. Pick an interval that turns the display off soon after you walk away. Test it while reading or working and adjust only if it interrupts active use.
- Check for updates. Install the latest available iPadOS, Android or manufacturer software, then revisit the display settings because an update may rename or relocate an option.
- Review apps that keep the screen awake. If a navigation, dashboard, kiosk or media app prevents sleep, lower brightness before leaving it unattended and turn the display off whenever the app no longer needs to be visible.
- Repeat the check after changing rooms. Automatic brightness responds to ambient light, but a manual override can leave the panel brighter than necessary. Confirm the slider is not still at its maximum.
What to do when an app must stay visible
Some tasks legitimately require an always-visible screen: a recipe on a kitchen counter, a reference document during a presentation, a monitoring dashboard or a game that pauses poorly. In those situations, reduce the exposure rather than relying on a single setting.
- Use automatic brightness or the lowest comfortable manual level.
- Turn the screen off during breaks, even if the app remains open in the background.
- Close or switch away from the app when the task is finished so its fixed controls are not left on screen.
- Where the app offers a dark theme, a screen saver or a setting that hides controls, use it; these choices change the displayed pixels, although they do not make prolonged maximum-brightness use safe.
Apple specifically notes that when an app keeps an iPad display on while you are not actively using it, brightness can be temporarily reduced in Control Centre. This is a practical way to reduce exposure without abandoning the task.

Recognize temporary image persistence
Signs that may be temporary
A faint remnant that appears after a static image has been shown, then fades during ordinary mixed-content use, is consistent with temporary image persistence. Apple says this type can disappear after a few minutes of normal use. Give the panel time to display changing content at a moderate brightness before deciding that permanent damage has occurred.
When to treat it as possible burn-in
If the outline remains visible after normal use and across different apps, it may indicate persistent uneven wear. Do not assume that every afterimage is permanent, but do not promise that established damage can be reversed either. Record what you see, note when it first appeared and contact the tablet maker or an authorized service channel if the mark interferes with use.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchSupport staff may ask for the model, software version, brightness habits and whether the mark appears on different colors. Those details help distinguish a transient remnant from a display fault, but no observation routine can restore permanently aged pixels.
A simple observation routine
- Exit the app that displayed the fixed element.
- Use the tablet normally with changing content for several minutes at a comfortable brightness.
- View light and dark backgrounds without repeatedly driving the panel at maximum brightness.
- Check whether the remnant is fading, unchanged or spreading to other content.
This routine is an observation aid, not a repair procedure. Avoid looping “pixel-refresh” videos or installing unverified utilities that claim to erase burn-in.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Built-in features are model-specific
Some devices include software that shifts static elements slightly. Samsung says its Always On Display image is repositioned over time on supported Galaxy devices to help prevent burn-in. Availability and settings vary, and the feature does not remove the need for sensible brightness and timeout habits. Samsung describes the behavior in its Always On Display support page.
Do not assume that a feature documented for one phone, tablet family or software build exists on another. A mitigation feature can reduce one type of static exposure while leaving other fixed interfaces unaffected. Check the support page for your exact model before relying on a vendor feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon approaches that do not solve the problem
- A screen protector: The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a protector as burn-in prevention. It may protect against scratches, but it does not change how OLED pixels age.
- A stand or case: Positioning accessories do not address static high-brightness exposure. They can make a tablet easier to use, but they are not a panel-preservation measure.
- Cleaning products: Cleaning the glass is unrelated to pixel wear. Use only the cleaning method approved for your model.
- Replacement parts: A replacement display is a repair option after damage, not a way to prevent it.
- Maximum brightness for convenience: A brighter image is not automatically better. Use only the brightness the room requires, particularly when content is not changing.
- Testing apps: Apps that flash colors or promise a “refresh” are not an established cure. They can keep the display active and should not substitute for lower brightness and shorter screen-on time.
A practical maintenance checklist
- Auto/adaptive brightness is enabled, or manual brightness is set to a comfortable, not maximum, level.
- Auto-Lock, screen timeout or sleep is short enough to turn the panel off when unattended.
- Apps that keep the screen awake are dimmed or closed during breaks.
- The operating system is up to date.
- The tablet is not left in direct sun or an unusually hot location.
- No app claiming to “fix” burn-in has been installed.
- Any faint image remnant is observed after normal use rather than immediately labeled permanent burn-in.
Limits of what prevention can promise
OLED wear is cumulative, and no setting guarantees an unchanged panel for the life of a tablet. Manufacturer guidance identifies exposure reduction—not a numerical lifetime, temperature limit or guaranteed threshold—as the practical response. Apple’s advice applies to the Ultra Retina XDR display on iPad Pro (M4 and M5); Google’s sleep-timer and app warnings are written for Pixel phones; Samsung’s menu names and Always On Display behavior vary by device and software. Use the relevant guidance for your exact model, then apply the shared principle: reduce bright, static content and let the display rest whenever you are not looking at it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I prevent OLED burn-in completely on a tablet?
No. Lower brightness, automatic brightness, shorter screen-off timing, current software and avoiding prolonged static images reduce exposure, but no setting guarantees that cumulative OLED wear will never occur.
Is every faint logo or toolbar an example of permanent burn-in?
No. Apple says temporary image persistence on covered iPad Pro displays can disappear after a few minutes of normal use. If a remnant remains across different apps and ordinary use, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service channel rather than assuming it will fade.
Should I set every tablet to a two-minute timeout?
No. Google’s recommendation of the default sleep timer or two minutes or less is written for Pixel phones. Apple recommends a shorter Auto Lock for covered iPad Pro models. Choose a reasonably short interval for your tablet and turn the screen off manually during longer breaks.
Does dark mode eliminate burn-in risk?
No. Dark mode can reduce brightness from some areas, but fixed controls and other static elements remain. Avoid leaving any unchanging interface at high brightness for prolonged periods.
Do screen protectors prevent OLED burn-in?
There is no manufacturer evidence here that a protector prevents burn-in. A protector may help with scratches, but it does not change how OLED pixels age.
What should I do if an app must stay open all day?
Use automatic or the lowest comfortable brightness, reduce brightness in Control Centre where supported, turn the screen off during breaks, and close or switch away from the app when it no longer needs to be visible. Do not leave a fixed view at maximum brightness unattended.
Are burn-in-removal apps safe or effective?
Google advises Pixel users not to install apps that promise to reduce or remove burn-in. There is no official support here for them as a remedy, and a test pattern cannot restore permanently unevenly aged pixels.
Why can’t I find the brightness or timeout setting shown in a guide?
Menu names and locations vary by model, software version, region and carrier. Search Settings for “brightness,” “screen timeout” or “sleep,” and consult the support page for the exact tablet model.
The Bottom Line
Keep OLED exposure moderate: enable automatic or adaptive brightness, use a reasonably short Auto Lock or screen timeout, keep software current, avoid hot direct sun, and do not leave bright static content on screen while you are away. These habits lower the risk without promising that burn-in is impossible.
