The two Honda NSX generations share a mid-engine, driver-focused idea but execute it with entirely different technology. The 1990 original used a naturally aspirated V6, rear-wheel drive and an all-aluminum monocoque. The 2016 successor kept the mid-engine layout but added a twin-turbo V6, a rear motor, two front motors, a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission and electrically controlled all-wheel drive.
Honda’s official material establishes the designs, output ratings and model chronology. It does not establish independent lap times, acceleration comparisons, reliability, maintenance costs or ownership experiences, so those conclusions should not be inferred from the specifications alone.

Mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout
Honda launched the NSX in September 1990 around a mid-mounted V6 and rear-wheel drive. That arrangement placed the major mass between the axles while leaving the front wheels responsible for steering rather than propulsion. Honda’s stated objective was unusually accessible high performance: its history describes a car that offered “both dynamic performance and ease of driving.” That sentence is Honda’s historical characterization, not an independent road-test verdict.

All-aluminum monocoque
The NSX used an all-aluminum monocoque, which Honda identifies as a production-car first at the time. The monocoque integrates the body and load-bearing structure rather than relying on a separate steel frame. Aluminum was therefore part of the car’s fundamental architecture, not merely an exterior-panel material. The historical account is available from Honda’s 1990s history of the NSX.
Naturally aspirated V6 and early output ratings
The launch engine was the 3.0-liter C30A, a DOHC V6 with Honda’s VTEC variable-valve technology. Honda’s engine history lists 280 PS at 7,300 rpm for five-speed manual cars and 265 PS at 6,800 rpm for four-speed automatic cars. Both versions are listed at 30.0 kg·m of torque at 5,400 rpm. These are engine ratings for specific transmission configurations, not a standardized modern system-output figure.
| Original C30A specification | Honda-listed value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Power, five-speed manual | 280 PS at 7,300 rpm | Engine rating for manual-transmission cars |
| Power, four-speed automatic | 265 PS at 6,800 rpm | Engine rating for automatic-transmission cars |
| Torque | 30.0 kg·m at 5,400 rpm | Honda’s C30A specification |

How the first generation developed
The original was not frozen at its 1990 specification. Honda later introduced larger-displacement engines, a six-speed manual transmission, the open-top Type-T and the more focused Type-R. Honda announced that production would end in 2005 in its discontinuation notice. Those changes show a gradual development path: the same rear-drive concept was refined through engine, transmission and body variants rather than replaced by a new propulsion architecture.
What the revived NSX added in 2016
A three-motor hybrid system
The second-generation NSX retained a mid-engine position for its combustion engine but changed how torque reached the road. Its Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system combines a twin-turbo V6, a rear direct-drive electric motor and a front Twin Motor Unit containing two motors. The front motors independently provide drive to the front wheels, making the car’s all-wheel-drive function electrically controlled rather than mechanically derived from a conventional propeller shaft.
Honda’s technology explanation describes the system in its Sport Hybrid SH-AWD overview. The practical difference in concept is straightforward: the original could send engine torque only through its rear axle, while the revived car could use electric machines at the front as part of its torque-management strategy. Honda presented that control system as a way to add responsiveness and handling capability; the available material does not independently measure those effects.

Twin-turbo V6, rear motor and nine-speed DCT
Honda’s 2015 technology information lists the later V6 at 373 kW from 6,500 to 7,500 rpm and 550 Nm from 2,000 to 6,000 rpm. The separate rear direct-drive motor is listed at 35 kW at 3,000 rpm and 148 Nm from 500 to 2,000 rpm. These are component ratings. Adding the numbers together would not produce a verified total system output because hybrid-system power is limited by operating conditions, control software, battery capability and the way manufacturers define combined output.
| Revived NSX component | Honda-listed rating | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Twin-turbo V6 | 373 kW at 6,500–7,500 rpm; 550 Nm at 2,000–6,000 rpm | Combustion-engine output |
| Rear direct-drive motor | 35 kW at 3,000 rpm; 148 Nm at 500–2,000 rpm | One electric-motor rating |
| Front motors | Not separately stated in the cited specification | Two motors in the front Twin Motor Unit |
The car uses a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Honda’s Japan sales announcement describes the twin-turbo V6, rear direct-drive motor, nine-speed DCT and front Twin Motor Unit together; that release concerns the Japanese market and should not be read as a global ordering or delivery specification. See Honda’s August 25, 2016 NSX sales release.
Multimaterial construction
Unlike the first car’s explicitly all-aluminum monocoque, Acura’s 2015 announcement describes the revived NSX as using a multimaterial structure. “Multimaterial” indicates that the structure combines different material types, but the cited announcement does not establish a simple weight, stiffness or crash-performance advantage over the original. Material labels alone cannot supply those comparisons.

Shared philosophy, changed implementation
Honda’s “human-centered” idea
Honda describes both generations as human-centered performance cars. The original history emphasizes high performance that remains easy to drive. For the successor, Honda and Acura used the phrases “human-centered supercar” and “New Sports eXperience.” In the 2015 unveiling, Acura senior vice president and general manager Mike Accavitti said: “Our commitment was to create an all-new NSX that is true to the heritage of NSX—a supercar that delivers a new driving experience, one where every part of the vehicle is respectful of the smartest part of the car, the driver.” The statement appears in Honda’s next-generation Acura NSX announcement.
The continuity is therefore philosophical rather than mechanical. Both cars put the driver at the center of a mid-engine sports car, but the first pursues that goal with a naturally aspirated rear-drive layout while the second uses software-managed hybrid torque and four driven wheels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRear drive versus electrically controlled all-wheel drive
On the original, the rear tires receive propulsion from the engine and the front tires steer. On the revived NSX, the rear axle combines the combustion engine, transmission and rear motor, while the two front motors can drive the front wheels. Sport Hybrid SH-AWD coordinates those sources. This changes the system’s available control options, but the specifications do not by themselves prove that one generation is faster, easier or more enjoyable in every situation.
Best Value
Natural aspiration versus turbocharging and electrification
The C30A develops power without turbochargers or electric assistance. The successor’s V6 uses two turbochargers, and its motors can deliver torque independently of engine speed within their operating ranges. That is an architectural change in how propulsion is generated and managed, not merely an increase in engine size. Because Honda reports the successor’s engine and motor figures separately, readers should avoid presenting them as a direct one-number contest with the original’s 280-PS or 265-PS engine ratings.
How each generation reached its endpoint
Original NSX: continuous refinement
The first generation’s arc runs from the 1990 3.0-liter, five-speed manual car through later displacement increases, a six-speed manual, the Type-T and Type-R. Production ended in 2005, closing a long development cycle built on the same basic rear-drive formula.
Revived NSX: a new architecture and Type S finale
The successor arrived in 2016 as a clean-sheet hybrid interpretation rather than an incremental update of the original. Honda announced the NSX Type S on August 3, 2021, explicitly calling it the final model of the second generation. The announcement is available at Honda’s Type S release. The Type S designation therefore marks the end of the revived car’s production story, just as the earlier Type-R and Type-T help explain the first generation’s evolution.
What can—and cannot—be concluded from the specifications
Conclusions supported by Honda’s documentation
- The generations share a mid-engine, driver-centered sports-car premise.
- The original is rear-wheel drive with an all-aluminum monocoque and naturally aspirated V6.
- The revived NSX uses a twin-turbo V6, three electric motors, a nine-speed DCT and electrically controlled all-wheel drive.
- The original’s published power figures are engine ratings tied to manual or automatic transmissions.
- The revived car’s cited 373-kW, 550-Nm V6 and 35-kW, 148-Nm rear-motor figures are component ratings.
- The original ended production in 2005; the second generation’s final model was the 2021 Type S.
Questions these sources do not answer
- Which generation is quicker in an independently timed acceleration or lap test.
- How steering feel, ride, braking or cornering balance compare on the road or track.
- Whether either generation is more reliable or less expensive to maintain.
- Current used-market prices, parts availability or long-term ownership satisfaction.
Those questions require independent tests or ownership data. Honda’s corporate history and launch material are appropriate for establishing configuration, chronology and stated engineering intent, but they are not substitutes for comparative testing.
Bottom line: the NSX name stayed, the engineering philosophy evolved
The original NSX was a pioneering aluminum, naturally aspirated, rear-drive supercar designed to make high performance approachable. The revived NSX preserved the mid-engine and driver-focused premise while replacing the simple drivetrain with a three-motor hybrid system, turbocharged V6, dual-clutch transmission and electrically managed all-wheel drive. The result is best understood as a technological reinterpretation of the same mission—not as the original car with more power, and not as a comparison that specifications alone can settle in terms of speed, feel or ownership.
