YouTube Live needs an encoder to send video to a stream URL using a stream key. VLC for Linux can read media and has a general-purpose stream-output system, but the official VLC documentation reviewed here does not confirm a direct YouTube RTMP(S) publishing workflow or a supported command for it. You can prepare the YouTube endpoint and key in Live Control Room; for the actual broadcast, use an encoder whose YouTube publishing support is documented, or verify direct publishing with your exact VLC build before relying on it.
What you need to know before entering a stream key in VLC
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses two destination details: a stream URL and a stream key. The URL identifies the server endpoint; the key identifies your broadcast. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like, so treat them as credentials.

VLC’s documentation explains that its stream output is assembled from modules and can process and output files VLC can read. It includes general network-output examples, but the reviewed official pages do not provide a Linux recipe for sending a VLC stream directly to YouTube. That documentation gap does not prove direct publishing is impossible in every VLC build; it means a specific command, GUI sequence, RTMPS support, and required output format are not established here. Check the capabilities of your installed build or choose an encoder with documented YouTube support.

Create a new live stream or schedule one. In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding server or URL and key fields in the encoder you intend to use.

Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when your encoder supports it. YouTube notes that Live Control Room may initially display the ordinary RTMP URL; reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in Stream settings when needed. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

Keep the key private. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; replace the old key in the encoder before sending again. Details are in Manage live stream settings.

Configure an encoder for YouTube’s requirements
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not VLC-specific settings. Apply the values supported by your chosen encoder and source, and consult the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the bitrate that matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate.

- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Frame rate: YouTube supports recommendations up to 60 fps; match the frame rate to the content and the applicable table entry.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Do not use a universal value. Select the recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate from YouTube’s current table.
Codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval work together. A feed can connect yet still have poor health if output settings are unsuitable. VLC’s general stream-output documentation does not establish that a particular Linux build can produce and deliver this YouTube-compatible combination directly.
Test the feed before going live

Use a short test with representative motion and the audio you plan to broadcast. Confirm that the source plays correctly in the encoder.

Start sending the feed to YouTube and open the Live Control Room preview. Check that both video and audio arrive, then inspect stream health rather than assuming that a successful connection means the feed is ready.

For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview and select Go live when ready. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend testing and monitoring your stream.

Keep an eye on the preview and health indicators during the broadcast so you can identify a feed or output problem promptly.
Troubleshoot connection and stream-health problems
| Symptom | What to check |

| RTMPS reports an SSL error | Confirm that the endpoint uses the RTMPS scheme and copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. YouTube says specifying port 443 may help in some SSL-error cases if your encoder permits it. |
