If VLC stops feeding YouTube Live when your Mac display turns off, first determine whether macOS is only switching off the display or putting the entire Mac to sleep. Run a short, preferably unlisted test with the Mac kept awake while the display is allowed to turn off, then compare VLC’s local output with YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages. That separates a display symptom from a stopped encoder or ingest feed; it does not assume a particular VLC setting is responsible.
First, distinguish display-off from Mac sleep
A dark screen does not prove the Mac is asleep. Display sleep and system sleep are different states, and Apple notes that other apps or frameworks can affect display sleep. Its AVFoundation documentation says the default value of preventsDisplaySleepDuringVideoPlayback is false on macOS; that property describes playback behavior, not VLC’s specific behavior or whether the Mac will remain awake during your broadcast. Apple’s AVFoundation documentation therefore does not establish a VLC preference that fixes this symptom.

Before changing settings, note your macOS version, Mac model, VLC version, whether the Mac is on battery or power, and when the display goes dark. Keep the test controlled: prevent system sleep for the test, allow the display to turn off if your macOS setup permits it, and change one factor at a time. Run a controlled YouTube Live test
- Open YouTube Live Control Room before starting. Use a short, preferably unlisted test broadcast so you can inspect the incoming feed without treating an unverified assumption as a fix.
- Keep the Mac awake while allowing the display to turn off. Use the sleep controls available in your installed macOS version; verify that the host remains awake rather than inferring its state from a black screen.
- Include relevant movement and audio, then observe both ends. Watch VLC’s local output and YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages as the display turns off. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the incoming stream during setup. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and stream-health guidance explain what to monitor.
- Record what happens and the exact time. Note whether VLC continues playing locally, whether YouTube’s preview continues, and any health messages at the failure point. These observations help isolate the problem; they are not a guarantee that a particular VLC or macOS configuration will behave the same on another Mac.

Check the stream configuration if the feed still stops
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key configured in the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it in support messages. If it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration.

Match stream settings to the actual source format and the upload bandwidth available to the Mac. YouTube’s current encoder guidance includes H.264, H.265, and AV1 and provides bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that is correct for every stream. Check the recommendations for your codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings, test before a longer broadcast, and watch stream health. Do not change bitrate or resolution merely because the display turns off unless YouTube’s status or the test points to an encoding or bandwidth problem.
If the failure persists while the Mac stays awake, collect the macOS and VLC versions, source type, VLC output configuration, time of failure, whether local playback continues, and YouTube’s exact health messages. YouTube describes the encoder as the software or tool that captures and compresses a feed and directs software-specific problems to that software’s support team. Its encoder troubleshooting guidance is a useful reference when the incoming stream, rather than just the local display, is affected.

Update VLC only as a version check, not a promised fix
VideoLAN’s Mac download page is the place to compare your installed version with the current release: VLC for macOS downloads. The page is the authoritative place to check because releases change. A 2019 VideoLAN development patch discussed macOS interface sleep-inhibition code, but it is historical evidence and does not establish how your current VLC build behaves or show that upgrading fixes this YouTube Live symptom. Update if your installed build is behind, then repeat the controlled test rather than assuming the update solved it.

If your requirement is to broadcast without a computer doing the encoding, YouTube lists standalone hardware including the AJA HELO Plus. YouTube describes it as an encoder for direct YouTube Live streaming, with optional functionality for scheduled pre-recorded media without a computer. That makes it a possible alternative workflow, not a necessary remedy for an ordinary Mac sleep-setting problem. Before choosing hardware, confirm that it accepts your source and supports the stream format and monitoring you need; YouTube’s listing does not establish that it fits every setup or budget.
