Ordinary personal transfers are not an authorized way to collect for goods or services. A business profile can make it easier for customers to find and pay you, but it also brings fees, tax reporting, identity checks and possible delays accessing funds.
Who can use a Venmo business profile?
Venmo offers business profiles to individuals and sole proprietors, associations and clubs, and registered businesses. A business profile is connected to a personal Venmo account; it is not a separate account with its own login. New customers can create a personal account and business profile during signup, while existing customers can add a profile in the app. See Venmo’s Business Profiles FAQ and business profile signup instructions for the current flow.

How to set up a business profile
- Start in the Venmo app. If you already have an account, begin from the Me tab or Settings and follow the option to create a business profile. New customers can choose the business signup flow to create a personal account and profile together.
- Enter your business details. Be ready to provide the business name and username, a description and category, address, and public-facing contact or social information. Venmo requests an EIN if the business uses one. A sole proprietor without an EIN may provide personal information and an SSN or ITIN.
- Complete identity verification if prompted. Registered businesses may need to provide beneficial-owner details and supporting documents. Venmo may request additional documentation to verify identity. Its identity verification guidance explains the process. Incomplete or unsuccessful verification can restrict the profile’s ability to accept payments or move money.
- Review what customers can see. A business profile can display business information and, where eligible, product photos. Venmo says search visibility is controlled by a marketing setting. Check the public-facing details and visibility settings before directing customers to the profile.
Business profile management and identity verification take place in the app. Account statements can also be viewed on the web, according to Venmo’s profile FAQ.
How customers can pay you
Venmo payments and QR codes
Customers can search for your business by its name or username, or scan its QR code for an in-person payment. Venmo also documents tipping and in-app refunds for business profiles. For a counter or checkout area, you can display the business QR code; a printed sign or display is optional, not a Venmo requirement.

Tap to Pay
Venmo describes Tap to Pay as a way to accept compatible cards and digital wallets in person. Its fee treatment differs from payments received from other Venmo accounts, so check the live Venmo fees page before choosing a payment method or quoting a rate.
Use an authorized sales payment route
Venmo’s rule is explicit: “The only way to accept payments for goods and services on Venmo is to be explicitly authorized to accept Venmo for purchases.” That means using a business profile or receiving an eligible payment clearly marked as a purchase—not asking buyers to send an ordinary personal transfer for a sale. Venmo’s Buying and Selling FAQ describes eligible purchase payments and the applicable terms.

Pros and cons for a small business
| Potential benefit | Tradeoff to weigh |
|---|---|
| A searchable business profile can help customers find you in Venmo. | The profile is tied to a personal Venmo account, and the owner may need to complete identity verification. |
| Profile details can include a website and social links; some industries can display an in-app photo gallery. | Business payments are subject to fees and tax reporting requirements. The exact current fee depends on the payment channel and should be confirmed on Venmo’s live fee page. |
| Customers can pay by QR code, and eligible businesses can use Tap to Pay for compatible cards and digital wallets. | Payment and transfer limits apply. Venmo’s limits page is the place to check current amounts. |
| Business profiles support features such as tipping and in-app refunds. | Venmo does not return the processing fee when you refund a business payment. Eligible payments may also be held, so a payment is not always immediately available. |
Fees, refunds, holds and protection
Venmo distinguishes fees by payment method, including Tap to Pay versus payments received from other Venmo accounts. The current fee schedule can change; consult the official fees page for the applicable rate rather than relying on an old quoted amount.
If you refund a business payment, Venmo says the processing fee is not returned. Its refund guidance explains how refunds work. Purchase Protection is not a blanket guarantee for every transaction: it applies to eligible purchase payments under Venmo’s terms, as described in the Buying and Selling FAQ.

Venmo is worth considering if your customers already use it and you want an in-app profile, QR-based in-person payments, or the documented business-profile features. Before relying on it as a primary payment route, assess the fee for each channel you expect to use, your verification readiness, the tax reporting requirements, refund costs, payment limits and whether a hold would disrupt cash flow. Compare those constraints with how your customers prefer to pay; Venmo’s terms and feature availability can change.
