Pinterest no longer offers a separate organic “Idea Pin” creation flow. The closest equivalent is now a regular Pin made from images, video, or a mix of media. Start with Create and choose Pin; use the Pinterest app if you want to combine multiple images and videos into one video Pin. Pinterest announced the unified format in August 2023, bringing standard Pin and Idea Pin features together (Pinterest’s announcement).
What happened to Idea Pins?
“Idea Pin” is still a familiar name for the former organic multi-page format, but Pinterest’s organic creation process is now a unified Pin flow. You do not need to find a separate “Create Idea Pin” button: create a Pin and use the media and editing options available in your account. Pinterest’s current instructions likewise describe creating a Pin, rather than selecting an organic Idea Pin format (Pinterest Help: Create a Pin).

Pinterest’s business documentation still describes Idea ads. Those are paid advertising, not another name for an organic Pin. If your goal is simply to publish content to a board, use the organic Pin workflow below.

Create a Pin on desktop
- Sign in to Pinterest and select Create. If you use a business account, Pinterest also documents the menu route Create Pin.
- Upload an image or video. On desktop, selecting multiple images creates separate Pins; it does not combine them into one multi-image Pin.
- Add the details shown for your selected media, such as a title, description, destination link, and board. You can also add up to 10 related topics. Product tags may be available for video Pins.
- Optionally edit the media, including adding text or changing its aspect ratio. Finish editing, review the Pin details, and publish.
Labels and available options can vary by account and interface rollout. Follow the controls currently shown in your Pinterest account.

Create a story-like video Pin in the mobile app
- Open the Pinterest app and tap the create control at the bottom of the screen, then choose Pin.
- Select existing photos or videos, or record video in the app. Selecting multiple images and videos can combine them into a single video Pin.
- Edit the media with the tools available in the app. If prompted, choose a cover for the video.
- Add a title, description, board, and any relevant link or product tags. Choose related topics if offered, then tap Create to publish.
The app is the practical choice when you want multiple media items combined into one video Pin. Exact controls can differ by app version (Pinterest Help: Create a Pin; Pinterest Help: Create video Pins).
Choose the creation method that fits your content
| What you want to make | Where to create it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A Pin from one image or video | Desktop or app | Upload or select the media, add details, and publish. |
| One video Pin combining several images and videos | Pinterest app | Select multiple items and combine them in the app’s video workflow. |
| Separate Pins from several images | Desktop | Multiple selected images create separate Pins. |
| A paid Idea ad | Pinterest Ads tools | This is an advertising format, not an organic Pin creation option (Pinterest Ads). |
Save a draft or schedule a Pin
Drafts are optional; you can publish directly instead. Pinterest says drafts expire 30 days after they are first stored and cannot be edited across different devices. Desktop users can save up to 50 drafts and publish multiple drafts together (Pinterest Help: Create a Pin).

Business accounts can schedule standard Pins up to 30 days ahead, with up to 10 future Pins scheduled at once. Scheduling is a separate convenience, not a requirement for creating an ordinary Pin (Pinterest Business Help: Schedule Pins).

Do you need a business account?
No business account is stated as a prerequisite for basic Pin creation. Pinterest identifies tools such as analytics and Business Hub as business-account features. Business accounts can also tag products in an organic Pin by searching existing product Pins or supplying a retailer product-page link (Pinterest Business Help).
Rank #3
Keep organic publishing separate from advertising: Pinterest’s ad specifications describe an Idea ad as a paid format that can use multiple videos, images, lists, and custom text in one Pin. Creating that ad involves advertising tools and an ad campaign, not simply publishing an organic Pin (Pinterest Ads).
