To convert a video in VLC Desktop, open Media → Convert/Save, add the source file, choose a destination filename and conversion profile, then click Start. When the conversion finishes, play the new file to check its picture and sound.
Convert a video in VLC Desktop
- Open VLC and select Media → Convert/Save.
- In the Open Media window, click Add, select the video you want to convert, and click Open.
- Click Convert/Save to open the Convert window.
- Under Destination file, enter a path and filename for the output. Include the extension you want, such as
.mp4, and choose a location you can find easily. - Choose a suitable option from Profile. The profile determines the conversion settings; typing an extension into the destination filename does not select a matching codec profile.
- Click Start and allow VLC to process the file.
- Open the resulting file and check that both the video and audio play as expected.

Choose a profile, not just a file extension
MP4 and MKV are containers: they package video and audio streams, which are encoded with particular codecs. Changing the destination name to end in .mp4 does not by itself tell VLC which codecs or conversion settings to use. Select a profile appropriate for the intended use, then test the finished file on the device or player that needs to open it.

VideoLAN lists broad input support for formats including AVI, ASF/WMV, MP4/MOV/3GP, Matroska (MKV), FLV, and several MPEG formats on its VLC features page. That list describes supported media inputs; it does not mean every source can be converted to every possible output profile.

If the converted file does not work as expected
- The output is missing: Check the destination path and filename you entered, then look in that folder for the file.
- The picture appears but there is no sound, or audio is problematic: Revisit the selected profile and its audio settings. Renaming the extension will not fix an encoding mismatch.
- The file plays on your computer but not on the target device: Check the device’s supported container and codecs, choose a suitable profile if available, and test the next output on that device.

VideoLAN describes VLC as free and open-source and provides downloads for major desktop platforms on its official VLC page. The version displayed on that page can change, so consult it for the current download rather than relying on an older version number.
