Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo use your phone’s cellular internet on a Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC, connect the phone with a USB data cable, then enable tethering on the phone. Android turns on USB tethering in its Hotspot controls; an iPhone uses Personal Hotspot and requires Apple Devices or iTunes installed on Windows. Your carrier may restrict tethering or charge extra.
Before you connect
- Make sure the phone has cellular service and mobile data, and check that your plan permits tethering or Personal Hotspot.
- Use a cable that fits both devices and supports data, not just charging. Connect directly to a PC port where possible.
- Keep in mind that USB tethering brings internet from the phone to the PC. Windows Mobile hotspot does the opposite: it shares the PC’s existing connection with other devices over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. See Microsoft’s Mobile hotspot guide.
Set up USB tethering from Android to Windows
- Connect the Android phone to the Windows PC with a USB data cable.
- On the phone, open the Hotspot controls. On many Android phones, swipe down from the top of the screen, then touch and hold Hotspot.
- Turn on USB tethering. If you cannot find the setting, search the phone’s Settings for “tethering”; menu names and locations vary by manufacturer.
- Wait for Windows to detect the connection, then try loading a webpage on the PC.
Google says most Android phones can share mobile data over USB, but support is not universal. Some carriers limit tethering or charge extra. Check Google’s Android hotspot and tethering instructions and your carrier’s plan details. Turn tethering off when you are finished; Google also recommends plugging in devices while tethering to extend battery life.

Set up iPhone USB tethering on Windows
- Install Apple Devices or iTunes on the Windows PC. Apple says one of these must be installed to use an iPhone’s Personal Hotspot over USB on Windows.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot and follow the onscreen instructions to turn it on.
- Connect the iPhone to the PC with a cable that matches the ports on both devices.
- If the iPhone asks Trust This Computer?, tap Trust and enter the passcode if prompted.
- Wait for Windows to establish the connection, then check internet access by loading a webpage.
Apple’s instructions name either Apple Devices or iTunes; they do not require a particular iTunes version. For the full procedure, see Apple’s iPhone Personal Hotspot guide.
Android and iPhone setup compared
| What differs | Android | iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Phone setting | Turn on USB tethering in the phone’s Hotspot controls. | Turn on Personal Hotspot in Settings. |
| Windows software | No general companion-software requirement is stated in Google’s setup instructions. | Apple Devices or iTunes must be installed for USB Personal Hotspot on Windows, according to Apple. |
| Trust prompt | No general USB trust prompt is specified in Google’s instructions. | If prompted, tap Trust and enter the passcode. |
| Eligibility and connection | Carrier restrictions or extra charges may apply; the cable must support data. | The plan must allow Personal Hotspot; use a cable compatible with both devices. |
Fix USB tethering that is not working
The phone has no tethering option, or the switch will not turn on
Check that cellular data works on the phone and confirm with your carrier that your plan allows tethering. Some operators restrict sharing or require an entitlement check, as described in Microsoft’s operator tethering-policy documentation. Android carriers may also limit tethering or charge extra, according to Google.

Windows does not detect a wired connection
Check that the cable fits both ports and supports data, then reconnect it directly to a PC port rather than through a hub. If possible, try another compatible cable or port. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance covers general compatibility and connection checks; it is not a guaranteed tethering-driver fix.
Windows shows a USB device error
Open Device Manager, find the device marked with a warning icon, and open Properties to read its device status and error code. Use that code to choose relevant troubleshooting steps. A warning can indicate a device or connection issue, but the available guidance does not establish one universal driver package for Android tethering across phone makers.

An iPhone connects, but Windows has no internet connection
Confirm Apple Devices or iTunes is installed, Personal Hotspot is on, and you accepted the Trust prompt if it appeared. If the connection still fails, check the cable and PC port. Apple lists the software and trust prompt as setup requirements or steps, not as a guaranteed fix for every Windows connection problem.
The connection works, but data use or charges are a concern
Tethering uses the phone’s cellular connection. Check your carrier’s tethering terms and monitor data usage; Google warns that some carriers limit tethering or charge extra.
