Firefox uses separate settings for what opens in a new window and what appears in a new tab. In desktop Firefox, open Settings > Home (sometimes labeled Home and startup) to choose a homepage or new-window page, then set the new-tab page independently.
Choose what opens in a new window
Go to Settings > Home and find Homepage and new windows. Choose the landing page that suits you:

- Firefox Home (Default): opens Firefox’s default home page.
- Custom URLs…: opens the page or pages you specify.
- Blank page: opens an empty page.
Mozilla’s instructions are for Firefox desktop; panel names and interface details can vary slightly by version or platform. See Mozilla’s homepage instructions.
Set one or more custom pages
- In Settings > Home, open the Homepage and new windows menu and choose Custom URLs….
- Enter the URL you want. To use pages you already have open in separate tabs, choose Use Current Pages.
If the Home button is available on your toolbar, you can also drag a page’s tab onto it and accept the prompt. Mozilla says the Home button is added to the toolbar automatically when you set a custom home page.

Set the new-tab page separately
Changing Homepage and new windows does not necessarily change what appears in a new tab. Firefox’s New Tab page can show web search, shortcuts to frequently visited sites, recommended stories, and other content; which content is available can vary by region. You can customize the page’s content or choose a blank new tab.
- Open a new tab and click the gear icon on the New Tab page.
- Choose Manage more settings.
- Under New Windows and Tabs, use the New tabs menu to choose Firefox Home or Blank Page.

Quickly match the setting to what you want

If clicking a link still opens a new window
This is a separate behavior from the homepage and new-tab settings. In Firefox’s tab preferences, check Open links in tabs instead of new windows. Mozilla notes that Firefox may still open a new window when a page specifies a particular window size, because the page may only display correctly at that size.
