You can’t tap or swipe directly on a MacBook Pro’s built-in display: Apple identifies it as a Liquid Retina XDR display, not a touchscreen, and its current specifications do not describe it as OLED. Use the built-in Force Touch trackpad and keyboard for everyday Mac tasks. If you want to touch Mac windows, Sidecar lets you interact with them on a compatible iPad instead.
Can you use a MacBook Pro screen as a touchscreen?
No. Apple’s current MacBook Pro specifications describe the built-in screen as Liquid Retina XDR and list a Force Touch trackpad for cursor control; they do not specify touchscreen input or call the display OLED. So tapping, pinching, or swiping the MacBook’s display is not a supported way to control macOS.

For scrolling, selecting, zooming, and routine navigation, use the trackpad and keyboard. If you specifically want touch interaction with Mac windows, the supported route is Sidecar on a separate compatible iPad.
Choose the right input for the task
| Approach | Where you interact | Best suited to | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in trackpad and keyboard | On the MacBook Pro | Routine navigation, scrolling, cursor precision, and keyboard-driven work | A MacBook Pro |
| Sidecar | On a separate iPad displaying Mac content | Touching Mac windows on the iPad, and Pencil-based drawing or markup | A compatible Mac and iPad; expanded touch interaction requires macOS 27 and iPadOS 27 |
Use the MacBook Pro’s trackpad for everyday tasks
Apple lists a Force Touch trackpad on MacBook Pro models. Use it as the Mac’s built-in pointing surface: move the pointer, click items, scroll through pages, and use supported Multi-Touch gestures. The trackpad gives you cursor control without reaching toward the display.
#1 Best Overall
- Magic Trackpad is wireless and rechargeable, and it includes the full range of Multi-Touch gestures and Force Touch technology.
- Sensors underneath the trackpad surface detect subtle differences in the amount of pressure you apply, bringing more functionality to your fingertips and enabling a deeper connection to your content.
- It features a large edge-to-edge glass surface area, making scrolling and swiping through your favourite content more productive and comfortable than ever.
- Magic Trackpad pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- The rechargeable battery will power it for about a month or more between charges.
For tasks that involve frequent text entry or commands, combine the trackpad with the keyboard. The key point is that a gesture intended for the MacBook itself belongs on its trackpad, not on its screen.
Use an iPad as a touch surface for Mac windows with Sidecar
Sidecar extends your Mac desktop onto an iPad or mirrors the Mac display there. Touch input happens on the iPad. Apple says greatly expanded touch interaction with Mac windows and menus in Sidecar begins with iPadOS 27 and macOS 27; on earlier operating-system versions, Sidecar supports a more limited set of gestures. Check both devices’ software versions if your goal is broad touch control.

Check compatibility and connection requirements
Apple’s general Sidecar compatibility requirements are macOS Catalina 10.15 or later on a supported Mac, and iPadOS 13 or later on a supported iPad. Those minimums do not provide the expanded touch interaction that Apple associates with macOS 27 and iPadOS 27.

- Supported Macs: MacBook Air introduced in 2018 or later; iMac Retina 5K 27-inch Late 2015; or other Mac models introduced in 2016 or later.
- Supported iPads: iPad Pro (all models); iPad (6th generation or later); iPad mini (5th generation or later); or iPad Air (3rd generation or later).
- For either connection method: Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication.
- For wireless Sidecar: Keep the devices within 10 metres (30 feet), turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff, and meet Apple’s connection-sharing restrictions.
- For USB Sidecar: Set the iPad to trust the Mac. A USB connection can also keep the iPad charged while you use it.
Apple’s Sidecar setup and compatibility guide lists supported devices and connection requirements. The operating-system floors above cover general Sidecar compatibility; expanded touch interaction has the newer version requirement described above.

Use Apple Pencil for drawing and markup
Apple Pencil is optional. During Sidecar, Apple says you can use it to point, click, select, draw, edit photos, manipulate objects, write, sketch, and mark up documents. The Pencil is input to Mac work through the iPad; it does not make the MacBook Pro’s own display touch-sensitive. Whether a particular task works as expected can also depend on the app.
