You can use a Galaxy S9 to control a compatible Samsung TV or projector through the SmartThings app. The phone does not have built-in infrared (IR) control, so SmartThings is the phone-based option; it requires the TV to be added to the app.

Before you start

  • Check SmartThings availability on your S9. Samsung UK lists Android 7.0 or later as an operating-system requirement, but says supported versions can change. Confirm the app is currently available for your phone in your region.
  • Check the TV. This method is for compatible Samsung TVs and projectors that can be added to SmartThings. The TV needs network access, and Samsung Account and internet access are required for the network-based smart services in these instructions.
  • Have a Samsung Account ready. You will need to sign in to SmartThings.

Samsung’s SmartThings TV and projector instructions describe using a phone as a remote after adding the device. Samsung notes that app, device, and service compatibility can vary by region, product, and version.

Set up the Galaxy S9 as a remote

  1. Open SmartThings on the Galaxy S9. If it is not installed, check the current app-store listing in your region to see whether it is available for your phone.
  2. Sign in with your Samsung Account.
  3. Make sure the compatible Samsung TV or projector is connected to the network and added to SmartThings. Follow the app’s prompts to add it if it is not already listed.
  4. In SmartThings, open Menu, choose All devices, then select your TV or projector.
  5. Use the on-screen remote that appears. Depending on the device, it may offer volume and channel controls, mute, Home, Back, Guide, navigation, and selection.

If the TV does not appear or controls are missing

The TV is not listed

Check that it is a supported device and that it has been set up to connect to SmartThings. Use the supported-device information in the app, and verify that SmartThings is available on the S9 in your region. Product and regional compatibility can differ.

The remote opens, but a control is absent

The available on-screen controls vary by TV or projector. A control shown for another device may not be available for yours.

If your TV cannot use SmartThings

Use the TV’s physical remote, or get a replacement matched to the television’s exact model. The Galaxy S9 is not an IR remote: Samsung Members support says infrared is unavailable on this model, and Samsung’s S9 brochure does not list an IR transmitter. Do not assume a generic IR accessory will let the S9 control the TV.
