Buying groceries in bulk saves money only if the price per amount you actually use is lower—and you can use the food before it spoils or loses quality. Plan meals, compare unit prices, account for edible yield and storage, and buy larger amounts only when there is room and a clear use for them.
Is buying in bulk actually cheaper?
Not automatically. A larger package can have a lower shelf price per ounce or pound, but that advantage disappears if some of the food is wasted, takes extra work to prepare, or requires storage you do not have. USDA Economic Research Service analysis describes bulk-purchasing savings in an institutional context while noting that refrigeration, storage, and spoilage costs can eventually outweigh them. How to compare bulk grocery prices
- Plan meals and quantities first. Write down what you expect to cook and how much you will use before your next trip. Treat the list as a limit for perishable food, rather than a reason to buy a bigger package. USDA MyPlate recommends meal planning around a budget and making a grocery list that includes staples and perishables. USDA MyPlate: Eat Healthy on a Budget
- Compare the same unit. Check the shelf-label unit price for comparable products—for example, price per ounce or pound. If that price is not displayed, divide the package price by its size after converting both to the same unit. MyPlate also recommends checking sales and comparing similar items by unit price.
- Compare what you will eat, not just package weight. When products differ by form, account for peel, bones, trimming, drained weight, or servings. A lower price per pound may not mean a lower cost per portion if less of the package is edible or usable. - Add the costs the shelf label leaves out. Consider preparation time, pantry or freezer capacity, food you may not use, and any extra energy or shopping trips that the larger quantity could require. The USDA guide notes that its raw-food cost comparisons do not include labor and storage costs.
- Buy the larger size only if the saving survives the comparison. Choose it when the household has a use plan, the amount can be stored safely, and the lower effective cost is still worthwhile. Otherwise, buy a smaller amount and get more later if needed.
What groceries are worth buying in bulk?
Start with foods your household already eats and that keep well in the storage space you have. USDA MyPlate gives whole grains, canned or dried beans, and frozen vegetables as examples of foods that can make sense in larger quantities because they store well. Fresh foods can still be a good bulk purchase when you have a specific plan to use them. For produce, compare the smaller and larger fresh packages with canned or frozen alternatives when those forms suit the recipe. Weigh the unit price alongside edible yield, prep effort, storage space, expected use before spoilage, and convenience. A cheaper price per pound may not translate to the least expensive usable portion.

- Set a realistic quantity from the meals you plan to make before your next shopping trip.
- Check refrigerator and freezer capacity before choosing a larger package. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service advises planning for adequate cold-storage space when buying food in quantity. USDA FSIS: How do you shop for food for large groups?
- Buy chilled or frozen foods near the end of the trip, keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood separate from other groceries, and go straight home.
- Refrigerate perishables within two hours of purchase—or within one hour when the temperature is above 90°F (32.3°C)—as advised by USDA FSIS.
- Divide a larger amount only when you have a realistic plan for using or storing each portion. Do not count food as a saving if it is likely to be thrown away.
USDA MyPlate puts the waste-prevention rule plainly: “Don’t overbuy foods that you will throw out later.”
