Isolate the suspected appliance from network access as soon as it is operationally safe, coordinating with its system or OT owner. Before shutting it down or attempting cleanup, consider whether responders need volatile evidence and whether stopping the device could create a service or safety risk. Record what you observe, preserve relevant evidence, check for effects beyond the appliance, and recover only from a trusted image or backup using the manufacturer’s instructions.
Contain the appliance without creating a new hazard
Notify the incident lead and the people responsible for the appliance, network, and any process it supports. Follow your organization’s incident-response plan. An edge device may provide a service or support an operational process, so do not treat unplugging it as a purely technical decision.

- Arrange isolation from network access as soon as the owner and response lead judge it safe. If other systems or network segments may also be affected, consider containment at a broader boundary.
- If disconnection cannot happen immediately, agree on interim controls with the incident lead and system owner. They should weigh the risk of continued network access against the consequences of disrupting the appliance.
- Use an out-of-band communications channel if there is reason to suspect an attacker can monitor organizational communications. Coordinate actions so that response activity does not inadvertently alert an active intruder.
CISA’s StopRansomware Guide says, in its ransomware-response checklist, “Determine which systems were impacted, and immediately isolate them.” Treat that as a containment principle to adapt to the appliance’s role, not as a model-specific procedure.
Preserve useful evidence before changing the device
Powering down or cleaning an infected system can remove volatile information or alter artifacts that help establish what happened. Where it is safe and qualified responders are available, consider evidence needs before shutdown, reimaging, or other remediation.

- Keep a timestamped incident log with the asset identifier, reported symptoms, observed network state, decisions, actions taken or deferred, and who authorized them.
- Retain relevant system, application, network, and security-tool logs before they are overwritten or expire. Save suspicious files and indicators for analysis without executing them.
- Ask trained responders whether to capture live processes, connections, memory, or a forensic image. Follow your organization’s evidence-handling procedures; improvised commands may change the system and complicate later analysis.
- Maintain clean copies of collected artifacts and chain-of-custody records if an investigation or legal action may follow.
- Do not rely solely on tools or logs from a potentially compromised host. Compare them with trusted monitoring and forensic sources where available.
CISA’s StopRansomware Guide recommends preserving system and memory information, logs, and relevant malware samples when mitigation cannot be performed immediately. Detailed acquisition procedures should follow current organizational practice and qualified guidance.
Check whether the compromise reaches other systems
A compromised appliance may share credentials, management paths, update infrastructure, or network trust with other equipment. A successful rebuild of one device does not establish that the rest of the environment is clean.

- Review network monitoring, security alerts, authentication activity, and logs from systems that communicated with the appliance.
- Identify potentially exposed administrator credentials, service accounts, management systems, update infrastructure, and other appliances with shared access or trust relationships.
- Protect backups from systems or network connections that may be compromised. Do not assume a backup is clean simply because it completed successfully.
- For OT-connected equipment, use the process owner’s continuity plan to decide how to operate safely if IT or OT access must be restricted or lost.
CISA’s 2022 critical-infrastructure guidance advises isolating affected systems, securing backups, reviewing logs and artifacts, and considering third-party expertise. It also emphasizes resilience planning for OT operators facing loss of access to or control of IT or OT environments.

Rebuild and reconnect from a trusted state
Use the appliance manufacturer’s recovery instructions for the exact model. The appropriate image, boot method, and firmware sequence are not universal, and the available guidance does not establish a standard Linux edge-appliance command sequence.

- Live Boot: Simply plug the USB drive into your computer, select the USB drive as your boot device, and experience Linux Mint without installation. This allows you to test the OS and its features before making any changes to your system.
- Install Option: Once you've tested and decided to keep Linux Mint, you can easily install it on your computer directly from the USB drive.
- Pre-installed software like LibreOffice for office tasks, a capable web browser (Firefox), email client (Thunderbird), and multimedia tools. This minimizes the need for additional downloads, saving you time and effort.
- Resource Efficiency: Designed to run efficiently on a variety of hardware configurations. It demands fewer system resources compared to some other operating systems, making it an excellent choice for older computers or devices with limited hardware specifications.
- Compatible with PC/Laptop/Desktop brands - Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba & more. Minimum system requirements 4 GB RAM Dual-Core Processor (2 GHz) 20 GB of free disk space
- Establish a trusted recovery source. Use a known-good vendor image or standard image where appropriate. Assess whether any backup intended for restoration is trustworthy and was protected from exposure.
- Address the likely entry path. Before restoration, identify and correct the exploited vulnerability or access weakness where possible. Check for suspected persistence and compromised accounts; replacing the operating system alone may not address a broader compromise.
- Reset affected access. From a trusted device, reset credentials for affected systems and accounts as part of the recovery plan. Rotate exposed keys or tokens where relevant to the appliance’s management and service relationships.
- Restore in a controlled environment. Where possible, use an isolated recovery network and avoid connecting unverified systems that could reinfect the rebuilt appliance.
- Reconnect deliberately. After recovery, monitor the appliance and related systems closely. Record recovery decisions, evidence retained, and lessons for incident-response plans.
CISA’s StopRansomware Guide recommends rebuilding with standard images where possible, addressing vulnerabilities and security gaps, resetting affected passwords, and carefully restoring from secure backups. This is ransomware-response guidance, not a substitute for the appliance vendor’s recovery procedure.
Decide whether shutdown is appropriate
There is no universal answer for every edge appliance. The incident lead and system owner should make the decision together, considering the device’s operational role, evidence needs, and what is known about the scope.

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Can the appliance be disconnected safely? | If not, the owner may need a controlled transition or compensating control rather than an unplanned interruption. |
| Could shutdown or cleanup destroy evidence? | Volatile information may be lost when a device is powered down; qualified responders can advise whether collection should happen first. |
| Are recovery sources trustworthy? | A known-good image and an assessed backup improve recovery confidence; an unverified source may carry risk. |
| Is the incident limited to this device? | Related systems, credentials, or management paths may also be implicated and need investigation or containment. |
| Can the team verify eradication? | Uncertain scope, suspected persistence, or limited forensic capability may justify specialist assistance. |
Bring in specialist help when risk or uncertainty is high
Seek qualified incident-response or digital-forensics support if the appliance is critical, evidence may be needed, several systems may be affected, persistence is suspected, or the organization cannot confidently determine scope and eradication. For OT environments, choose responders who can account for both digital evidence and operational continuity.

Do not apply desktop malware instructions blindly
NIST SP 800-83 Rev. 1, published in July 2013, addresses malware prevention and handling for desktops and laptops; it is not a universal edge-appliance recovery manual. NISTIR 8428 addresses OT incident response at a framework level. Neither establishes model-specific commands, firmware restoration steps, or a safe isolation method for every appliance. Use the exact manufacturer’s instructions and the system owner’s operational plan for those decisions.
