Use the Crypto Fear & Greed Index as a sentiment check and a behavior guardrail—not as a buy or sell trigger. Before placing an order, record the score and timestamp, write your asset-specific thesis and invalidation rule, set a maximum loss and position size, wait through a defined cooling-off period, and verify the underlying market evidence. If those rules no longer support the trade, do nothing.
What the Crypto Fear & Greed Index measures
Alternative.me publishes a Bitcoin-focused score from 0 to 100. Zero means “Extreme Fear,” while 100 means “Extreme Greed.” The number is a composite of market and behavioral indicators rather than a forecast of the next price move.

Bitcoin is the focus because price volatility is a major input. The reading can therefore diverge sharply from the conditions of a particular altcoin, token sector or exchange. Treat it as a broad crypto-market mood gauge with a Bitcoin bias, not as a description of every digital asset.
The published components

Alternative.me’s methodology combines these signals into one score. Because it compares present conditions with rolling averages, a reading reflects both what markets are doing now and how unusual that behavior is relative to recent history.

What a high or low reading can—and cannot—tell you
Extreme Fear
A very low score indicates widespread concern, falling prices, high stress or defensive positioning. Alternative.me says that extreme fear “could be a buying opportunity,” but that is the publisher’s hypothesis, not a promise of a rebound. Fear can persist while prices continue to fall, and a low reading does not identify a bottom.
Extreme Greed
A very high score signals crowd confidence and a greater risk of fear of missing out (FOMO). It does not establish that a rally is over. Prices can remain strong while sentiment is elevated, or reverse suddenly for reasons the composite has not yet captured.
The index is not a timing system
The score has no authoritative standalone-return statistic establishing that extreme fear reliably marks bottoms or extreme greed reliably marks tops. It is a summary of sentiment, not a published guarantee of predictive performance. Use it to ask better questions about your plan and emotions, then rely on asset-specific evidence for the decision.

Do not combine this reading with CNN’s stock-market Fear & Greed Index. That is a different product built from seven equally weighted stock indicators; its value is not interchangeable with Alternative.me’s crypto score.
A pre-trade process that prevents impulse decisions
Complete this sequence before every trade influenced by a sentiment reading. Write the answers down; a memory of the chart is not a plan.
- Write the thesis, catalyst and invalidation condition. State why this specific asset should rise or fall, what event or condition could change that view, and the price, fundamental or time-based condition that proves the thesis wrong. Write it before searching for confirmation.
- Record the index value, label and timestamp. Save the exact score, its classification and the time zone or UTC time. A screenshot without a date cannot tell you whether the reading was current when you acted.
- Set the maximum position and dollar loss. Choose the largest amount you can lose without breaking your broader financial plan. Include fees, slippage and the possibility that an order cannot be exited at the displayed price.
- Apply a cooling-off period. Decide in advance how long you will wait after an extreme reading or a sharp price move. During that period, you may gather evidence, but you do not enlarge the position because of excitement or panic.
- Re-check the asset itself. Review liquidity, trend, valuation or network fundamentals, relevant news and the asset’s own risks. Confirm that the Bitcoin-focused index is relevant to this trade rather than merely emotionally compelling.
- Execute only if the original rules still hold. If the thesis, risk limit or invalidation condition has changed, cancel the order and document why. “Doing nothing” is a valid outcome.
Turn a risk limit into a position size
Position sizing should follow the amount you are willing to lose, not the strength of a sentiment signal. A simple planning equation is:

position size = maximum acceptable loss ÷ (entry price − invalidation price)

For example, if an account owner has chosen a $100 maximum loss and a planned entry of $50 with invalidation at $45, the price risk is $5 per unit and the position size is 20 units before fees and slippage. The calculation is only a planning example; your own loss limit must reflect your finances, liquidity and the possibility of gaps.
Keep leverage and concentration inside the plan
- Do not increase leverage because the index is extremely fearful or greedy.
- Count correlated holdings together when assessing concentration; several tokens can lose value at the same time.
- Reserve additional capacity for fees, slippage, maintenance requirements and an exit that takes longer than expected.
- Use only money you can afford to lose entirely in a speculative investment. Investor.gov describes crypto-asset investments as “exceptionally risky” and says the risk of loss remains significant.
Why an altcoin can move differently from the Bitcoin reading
The index is calculated around Bitcoin-related market behavior. An altcoin can therefore rise while the index shows fear, or fall while the index shows greed. Its liquidity may be thinner, its token supply may be changing, and its price may respond to a protocol exploit, listing decision, governance vote, unlock schedule, stablecoin exposure or sector-specific news.

Before using the index in an altcoin decision, check:
- Trading depth and spreads on the venues you can actually use.
- Token issuance, unlocks, treasury sales and concentration of ownership.
- Network usage, security incidents, development activity and protocol revenue where relevant.
- Whether the news driving the asset is independent of Bitcoin.
- Whether your stop or invalidation level can be executed in the asset’s real liquidity conditions.
If those facts conflict with the sentiment reading, the asset-specific evidence controls the decision. The index should not override a thesis that has been invalidated.

Check the timestamp before acting
Open Alternative.me’s index page and note the displayed score, classification and update time. Save the time with the market price and your own notes. Check whether the data is stale before treating a rapid move as confirmation; a delayed composite can describe an earlier market state.

Use the documented API for a trading journal
Alternative.me documents a /fng/ API that can return JSON or CSV and provides historical data subject to its stated limits. A log or alert should store, at minimum:
- The returned score and classification.
- The source timestamp and the time your system received it.
- The asset, venue and price you were evaluating.
- Your thesis, invalidation condition, position limit and final action.
Follow the API’s attribution rules; its documentation states that commercial use is allowed with attribution. Do not build an automated order trigger solely from the number. Add a stale-data check, preserve the raw response, and require a human review of the written trading rules before execution.
Custody and market risk are separate from sentiment
The index measures mood. It does not protect coins, guarantee an exit, improve exchange solvency or prevent a transfer from failing. Investor.gov recommends considering asset allocation and diversification and risking only money that can be lost entirely in speculative investments.
Custody is a separate choice. Investor.gov’s 2025 custody bulletin explains that wallets hold private keys or passcodes and highlights fees, transfer restrictions, hacking and loss risks. A hardware wallet can provide a physical way to control keys, but it cannot reduce Bitcoin’s price volatility or stop an impulsive trade. Verify the seller, firmware and recovery procedure before moving funds, and understand how you will recover access if the device is lost.
Common mistakes and the corrective rule

A practical journal entry
A useful entry is short but specific: “Bitcoin-focused index: score and classification recorded at [timestamp]. Thesis: [condition]. Catalyst: [event]. Invalidation: [condition]. Maximum loss: [amount]. Cooling-off ends: [time]. Asset evidence checked: [liquidity, trend, fundamentals and news]. Decision: [buy, sell or no trade]. Reason if no trade: [rule that failed].” Keep variable text such as timestamps and amounts in your own records rather than treating a score as a permanent signal.
Investor.gov’s guidance is consistent with this discipline: “Create and follow an investment plan. Do not let short-term emotions about investments disrupt your long-term investment objectives.” The index is most useful when it helps you follow that plan rather than replace it.
