For a webpage thumbnail, use TagSpaces Web Clipper: save the page as HTML with “Save Editable Page” or save it as a bookmark (URL file). The extension embeds a screenshot of the visible part of the page in either file by default. If you need a separate image instead, choose “Take Screenshot” for a visible-viewport PNG or “Full-Page Screenshot” for a tall, stitched PNG. This is TagSpaces’ workflow; OneNote, Obsidian and Notion use “Web Clipper” for different tasks.
Save a webpage with an embedded thumbnail
- Install TagSpaces Web Clipper from your browser’s extension store. The TagSpaces documentation names Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave and Opera; store availability and menu options can vary by browser.
- Open the webpage you want to save, then click the Web Clipper extension in the browser toolbar.
- Choose “Save Editable Page” to save an HTML file, or choose the bookmark action to create a URL file. You can edit the title and add tags before creating the file.
- Keep “Embed screenshot in saved files” enabled in the extension settings. It is enabled by default. The clipper adds a screenshot of the visible portion of the page, which serves as the saved file’s thumbnail.
The thumbnail shows what was visible when you captured the page; it does not automatically represent the whole page. Scroll to a different part before saving if that is the portion you want represented.

Choose a standalone screenshot when you need an image file
- Take Screenshot: saves a PNG of the current visible viewport.
- Full-Page Screenshot: scrolls through the page in viewport-sized steps and stitches the captures into one tall PNG. It can take several seconds on long pages because browsers limit capture frequency. The process hides fixed and sticky elements after the first capture to avoid repeating items such as headers and cookie banners, then restores them.
These commands produce image files rather than a screenshot embedded as the thumbnail of a saved HTML or URL file.

Where the saved files go and what else the clipper can save
TagSpaces Web Clipper saves ordinary files locally; its basic functionality does not depend on the TagSpaces desktop app. The documented output formats include HTML, Markdown, MHTML, PDF, PNG and URL files, though exact actions may differ by browser.

- HTML offers “Simplified Mode,” which extracts main content without ads and navigation, and “Full Mode,” which keeps the original text and image content.
- Markdown extraction is experimental and can vary with page complexity.
- Image embedding and screenshot embedding are separate settings. Image embedding puts page images into saved HTML or Markdown as data URLs; screenshot embedding adds the screenshot thumbnail.
- In Chromium browsers, “Save Complete Page” can save MHTML, but may require enabling the “Save Page as MHTML” browser flag. The TagSpaces documentation warns that enabling it means the browser will no longer save websites as HTML files, so it is unnecessary for a thumbnail-only task.
In Chrome, Edge, Brave or Opera, Chrome’s advanced setting “Ask where to save each file before downloading” can prompt you to choose a save location.
Troubleshoot common thumbnail problems
The saved HTML or bookmark has no thumbnail
Open the Web Clipper settings and check that “Embed screenshot in saved files” is enabled. Then create a new saved file; the setting does not add a screenshot retroactively to files already saved.

The thumbnail shows only part of the page
That is the expected result for an embedded thumbnail: it captures the visible area. Scroll to the section you want before saving, or use “Full-Page Screenshot” if you need the entire page as a standalone image.

Long pages can take several seconds because the browser limits screenshot frequency. TagSpaces’ process hides fixed and sticky elements after the initial capture to avoid repeating them, then restores them; allow the capture to finish before closing the tab.
The page images are missing from saved content
Check image embedding separately from “Embed screenshot in saved files.” The screenshot option controls the thumbnail; image embedding controls whether page images are included as data URLs in saved HTML or Markdown.

You cannot find the same save action in your browser
Available output actions vary by browser. Use a supported browser listed by TagSpaces and check its extension-store version and current menu. Do not enable the MHTML flag just to get a thumbnail; the embedded screenshot feature works through saved HTML and URL files.
If you meant a different Web Clipper
“Web Clipper” is not a unique product name. OneNote Web Clipper can save a full page or selected region as a screenshot image in a notebook section. Obsidian Web Clipper saves clipped material into a vault; image references remain web URLs unless you download attachments separately. Notion Web Clipper saves pages to a workspace, page or database, and a database clip gets a URL property for the source address. Those documented workflows are not the same as TagSpaces automatically embedding a webpage screenshot as a saved-file thumbnail.
