To have an FFmpeg YouTube stream start after a Linux server reboots, run the tested FFmpeg command from a systemd service, enable that service at boot, and choose a restart policy for process exits. If the service needs the network configured before launch, order it after network-online.target—but confirm the server’s network manager provides a working wait-online service.
What systemd will—and will not—recover
An enabled system service gives FFmpeg a place in the server’s boot process. A restart policy can relaunch FFmpeg when the managed process exits. It does not, by itself, prove that a stream will recover from every network interruption: if FFmpeg stays running but stalls or loses its connection, systemd may have no process exit to act on. HTTP-specific FFmpeg reconnection options should not be assumed to fix RTMP output recovery.

The exact behavior of service directives can vary with the systemd version installed on a distribution. Check the server’s local systemd.service(5) manual before relying on a directive’s semantics.

Prepare and test the FFmpeg command
Confirm the executable and command
- On the target server, identify the FFmpeg executable path provided by its package or build. Use that full path in the service rather than assuming the service environment has the same
PATHas your interactive shell. - Run the complete command interactively and confirm that YouTube receives the stream before putting it in a unit. This separates FFmpeg or stream-configuration problems from systemd startup problems.
- Keep FFmpeg options in the correct order. Its documented command form is
ffmpeg [global_options] [input_options] -i input [output_options] output_url; input options go before the relevant-i, and output options go before the output URL. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Get YouTube’s current destination and key
Get the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s guidance is: “Copy your YouTube stream key from the Live Control Room and paste it into your encoder.” If you choose encrypted delivery, use the RTMPS server URL with the key; RTMPS is RTMP over TLS. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and use the destination shown for your stream.

Treat the stream key as a credential. Do not make it readable by unrelated users or expose it in a broadly accessible script or configuration. A protected configuration or environment file is preferable to putting the key in a file with permissive access.
Create a systemd service
Create a system-level unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service. The example below shows the structure, not a ready-to-run streaming command: replace the executable path, input, options, output URL, and key source with the command you tested. Keep the service’s actual credential handling protected.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetDo not paste the bracketed explanatory text into the unit. Use your real, tested arguments and the actual FFmpeg path. The five-second delay is an example of a deliberate pause before a retry, not a guarantee that YouTube or the network will be ready then.
Choose the restart behavior deliberately
Restart=on-failure is one reasonable starting point when you want systemd to retry after a failed exit. Restart=always is another pattern shown in an FFmpeg-user service example, with RestartSec=5; it may suit a process that should be relaunched after exits generally. Which policy is appropriate depends on the service’s intended exit behavior and the installed systemd version. Consult the local manual rather than treating the example as a universal rule. A nonzero delay helps avoid an immediate retry loop.

Decide whether to wait for network configuration
The example includes both Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target. Use this dependency when the service needs configured connectivity at startup, and verify that the host’s network manager has its corresponding wait-online service enabled. Without that provider, the target may not wait for usable connectivity as intended.
network.target is an ordering marker for network-management startup and shutdown; it does not establish that external connectivity is ready. network-online.target is the wait point for services that need configured connectivity, subject to the host’s network-management setup. Waiting can add time to boot. Even a successful wait-online signal does not ensure that DNS, YouTube, or the upstream video source is reachable. For details, see systemd’s network target guidance.

Reload, enable, start, and verify the service
- Save the unit, then reload systemd’s unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service so it is scheduled for the system’s normal boot target, and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Check the unit state and recent logs:
sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.serviceandsudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service. Look for command-line errors, credential or permission problems, and connection failures. - During a controlled maintenance window, reboot the server. After it returns, check the service state and logs again, then confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that the stream is receiving data.
These commands are a practical workflow; check their availability and the relevant manual pages on the target distribution. Do not treat a service marked active as proof that YouTube is receiving a usable stream.

A reboot, an FFmpeg process exit, and a network interruption test different things. Test a deliberate process exit and confirm whether the selected restart policy relaunches FFmpeg. Separately test the network-loss case you care about and observe whether FFmpeg exits, remains alive, or recovers. If it remains alive while disconnected, a basic systemd restart policy may not help. Review logs and the documentation for the installed FFmpeg build; the FFmpeg protocol documentation does not establish a universal RTMP-output reconnection guarantee.

Troubleshooting
- The service does not start at boot: Check
systemctl is-enabled youtube-ffmpeg.service, the unit’s[Install]section, and whether you randaemon-reloadafter editing. Inspectsystemctl statusand the unit journal for parse or executable errors. - systemd reports that FFmpeg cannot be executed: Confirm the executable path exists on this server and that the service account can access it. A command that works in a shell may depend on a shell-specific
PATHor environment that systemd does not inherit. - FFmpeg starts but YouTube receives no data: Compare the service’s arguments with the interactively tested command. Verify the current stream URL and key in Live Control Room, check input and output option ordering, and read the FFmpeg journal output.
- The service retries too quickly: Set a deliberate
RestartSecdelay and verify restart behavior against the local systemd manual. A retry policy cannot correct an invalid command or credential. - The stream fails shortly after boot: Confirm the network manager’s wait-online provider is active if the unit depends on
network-online.target. The target does not verify reachability of YouTube, DNS, or the input source. - FFmpeg remains active but the stream is stalled: A process-based restart policy may not trigger because the process has not exited. Diagnose that failure mode separately; do not assume HTTP reconnect switches guarantee RTMP output recovery.
