Windows can install updates and restart a PC that is encoding a 24/7 YouTube stream. Set Windows active hours to reduce restarts during your monitored period, then configure and test an encoder restart after boot or sign-in. These steps reduce downtime; they cannot guarantee uninterrupted streaming or prove that YouTube will resume the same live event.
What Windows settings can—and cannot—do
On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours and choose hours that cover the period when you most need the stream monitored. Labels and available choices can vary by Windows release. Active hours aim to keep ordinary automatic restarts outside that interval; they are not an uptime guarantee.

Windows Update’s consumer pause setting is temporary: updates eventually need to resume. Avoid disabling security updates indefinitely. Microsoft explains these limits in its Windows Update FAQ. Windows 10 instructions are also included there, but Windows 10 and Windows 11 settings differ by release.

A qualified Windows 11 update change
Microsoft said on August 14, 2026 that Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H1 are gradually receiving an update experience that groups some restart-requiring driver, .NET and firmware updates with the monthly security update. The change applies to updates released on and after July 28, 2026; Microsoft says rollout is gradual and updates will not be held indefinitely. It is not a promise that every Windows PC will restart only once a month. See Microsoft’s version- and rollout-specific announcement.
Make the encoder start after Windows restarts
Task Scheduler can launch an encoder at system startup or when a user signs in. Startup is useful for an encoder that can run without an interactive desktop; a logon trigger may be necessary for software that needs the signed-in user’s desktop. Microsoft documents logon triggers and an example for starting an executable when a user logs on.
- Check the encoder’s startup requirements. Confirm whether it can run at system startup or needs the streaming account signed in. Check its own auto-start and reconnect options; behavior varies by encoder and configuration.
- Open Task Scheduler. Use the Windows Start search for “Task Scheduler,” then choose Create Task (or the available task-creation option). Create a task for the Windows account and permissions the encoder requires.
- Add a trigger. Choose At startup if the encoder does not require an interactive desktop, or At log on for the account used to stream. A short delay can help if the encoder starts before required network or other services are ready.
- Add the encoder executable. In Actions, select Start a program, browse to the correct executable, and set the working directory if the encoder depends on it. Do not assume a task that launches a graphical program will work correctly when no user is signed in.
- Save and test the task. Check its account, trigger and action, then run it manually once. Confirm that the intended encoder—not just a launcher or updater—opens and that it can access the stream configuration.
Microsoft also documents startup and logon trigger creation through PowerShell in New-ScheduledTaskTrigger. The exact command and task configuration depend on the Windows account and encoder; there is no universal command here that guarantees an encoder will resume a broadcast.

Confirm that YouTube receives the stream after a reboot
Launching the encoder is only the first step. The encoder must reconnect, and YouTube must accept its feed into the intended live event. A successful program launch does not establish that the same YouTube watch page is live again.
- Check the YouTube live setup. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use its stream URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube explains the encoder workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Protect the stream key. YouTube says stream keys are like a stream’s password and address. Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots and logs, and store it securely. A custom key can be reused, but that does not make it safe to share. See Manage live stream settings.
- Review YouTube’s start and stop options. YouTube offers auto-start and auto-stop settings, but their availability does not prove that every encoder will reconnect to an existing event after Windows restarts. Check the settings for your event and encoder rather than assuming automatic recovery.
- Run a planned reboot test. During a maintenance window, restart the PC and observe the entire chain: Windows starts, the correct account session is available, the encoder opens, the encoder reconnects, and the intended YouTube event shows a healthy live feed. Check the viewer-facing page as well as the encoder status.
Do not rely on the setup until this real restart test succeeds. If the encoder opens but does not reconnect, troubleshoot its own startup, sign-in and reconnect behavior; if it reconnects to a different event or fails to make the intended page live, adjust the YouTube and encoder workflow and test again.
Add a tested backup encoder
A separate, configured backup encoder can provide a failover path if the primary encoder stops. YouTube recommends testing the backup by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking that the viewer player rolls over. Follow YouTube’s streaming tips and verify the behavior in your own event before depending on it.

This test checks failover; it does not prevent Windows Update from restarting the primary PC. A dedicated hardware encoder is another production setup to evaluate, but it does not control Windows Update on that PC. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events; that is a production recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
Plan separately for a 24-hour archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a complete archive of a 24/7 broadcast. If you need a full recording, plan a separate recording or archive workflow, or consider splitting broadcasts only after checking YouTube’s current behavior and testing your own process. Check channel eligibility before troubleshooting the PC
If live streaming is unavailable, confirm the channel is verified and has not had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Those are YouTube’s stated eligibility conditions in Get started with live streaming.

Common restart and recovery problems
- Windows restarts while the stream is unattended: Active hours may not cover the restart, or the restart may fall outside what the setting can prevent. Adjust the monitored hours, keep updates enabled, and use a tested recovery plan.
- The task runs but the encoder does not appear: The program may require an interactive desktop or the correct account. Try a logon trigger, verify the executable path and working directory, and test while signed in as the streaming account.
- The encoder opens but does not go live: Program launch is not the same as reconnecting. Check the encoder’s reconnect settings, YouTube event configuration and stream key, then repeat the reboot test.
- The player does not switch to the backup: Confirm the backup encoder is configured for the same production and test rollover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, as YouTube recommends.
- A full-day recording is missing or incomplete: Do not infer that a 24-hour stream will be archived in full from YouTube’s under-12-hour archive statement. Use and test a separate archive plan.
