To loop locally stored videos of different formats on YouTube Live, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source: add the files in playback order, keep Loop Playlist enabled, then stream OBS’s encoded scene to YouTube. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC). Test every file and the playlist wrap before going live; support depends on your installed software, codecs and media.
How the playlist becomes a YouTube Live stream
There are two separate stages. OBS decodes the local files and composes them into a scene; its streaming encoder then sends that program to YouTube. YouTube receives the encoded live output, not each original playlist file. That means file compatibility is about whether your OBS/VLC setup can play the source, while codec, bitrate and keyframe settings apply to the outgoing stream.

For a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source is the documented option. OBS’s separate Media Source is intended for an individual local media file and provides a per-file loop setting; it is not the same as playlist playback. OBS Media Sources documentation (published January 11, 2022) describes the VLC source workflow and its playlist controls.
Prepare OBS and VLC
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC; otherwise the VLC Video source may not appear.
- Open OBS and create or select the scene that will carry the loop.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. If that option is missing, check that VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS, then restart OBS.
- Give the source a clear name, such as “Loop playlist,” and open its properties.
Add and configure the mixed-format playlist
- In the VLC Video source properties, add the local video files to the playlist in the order you want them to play. Confirm the order visually before starting the stream.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled so playback restarts after the final item. OBS documents this option as On by default.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist disabled if the videos must play in a fixed sequence; it is Off by default.
- Save the source settings and preview playback in OBS. Check the beginning and end of each clip and, especially, the transition from the last file back to the first.
OBS’s Media Source documentation explicitly lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM video, plus MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV audio. That list describes Media Source, not a complete VLC Video format matrix. The VLC source uses VLC libraries for extended media support, but the documentation does not enumerate every supported file/codec combination. Treat mixed-format compatibility as something to verify on your own installed OBS/VLC versions rather than assuming a file extension guarantees playback.

Set the YouTube encoder output in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Connect the YouTube account or configure the stream using the current YouTube Live setup instructions. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Use RTMPS as the normal ingestion route. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live encoder delivery. Follow YouTube’s current connection workflow and verify that OBS is connected to the intended channel and broadcast.
- In OBS Settings > Output and Video, choose an encoder and output settings your computer can sustain and that YouTube supports. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Encoder availability depends on your OBS version and hardware.
- For audio, choose AAC or MP3 as supported by YouTube’s live encoder guidance. Check that the OBS audio meter moves during playback and that the stream is not silent or clipping.
- Start with a resolution and bitrate appropriate to your connection and chosen output. YouTube’s published encoder page gives the current technical guidance; do not infer the live output settings from the resolution or codec of the source files.
See YouTube’s live encoder settings for its published delivery recommendations. They describe encoder output requirements and guidance, not a guarantee that a particular local playlist or computer will run without interruption.
Rehearse before making the loop public
- Play through every playlist item in OBS. Confirm video, audio, aspect ratio, and that no file is missing, frozen or unexpectedly silent.
- Watch the playlist wrap from its final item to its first. OBS documents looping, but does not promise a seamless visual or audio transition.
- If your workflow allows, rehearse with an unlisted or private broadcast. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before scheduling or switching to a public stream.
- Once the rehearsal is satisfactory, verify the intended broadcast visibility and start the live stream.
RTMPS or HLS?
For the usual OBS-to-YouTube setup, choose RTMPS. HLS is a documented alternative when the encoder or stream needs call for it, including some HDR or codec situations not supported by RTMP, but it adds latency because it sends segments. YouTube’s HLS setup requires TS segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; its API documentation specifies further encoder-level playlist and segment requirements. Unless your workflow specifically needs HLS, avoid building HLS playlists manually.

Troubleshooting common playlist and stream problems
- VLC Video is missing in OBS: install VLC, make sure its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC), and restart OBS.
- A file will not play or has no sound: verify that it plays in your installed VLC, then test it as a playlist item in OBS. A listed extension alone does not establish that the file’s particular codec is supported by your local setup.
- The playlist stops after one pass: open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Items play in an unexpected order: check the playlist ordering and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off if fixed order is required.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: confirm the selected YouTube account, current stream setup and private stream key, then check OBS connection status and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Re-enter a key only through the trusted YouTube/OBS setup flow.
- Playback reaches YouTube but video or audio is poor: first distinguish a source problem from an encoder/output problem. Check OBS preview and audio meters; then review supported codec, constant bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution and connection capacity against YouTube’s guidance.
- The loop has a visible or audible gap: test the exact clip boundary in advance. The documentation does not guarantee seamless transitions; adjust the source files or scene workflow if a hard cut or gap is unacceptable.
