Run your working FFmpeg command as a foreground systemd service, then configure systemd to restart it when it fails. A restart policy can recover after FFmpeg exits; it cannot guarantee that a streaming platform accepts the output or detect every case where FFmpeg remains running but the stream has stalled.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
systemd supervises the lifetime of a process. With a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure, it can start FFmpeg again after an unsuccessful exit, subject to the unit’s restart limits and local systemd policy. RestartSec= sets the delay before another attempt.

FFmpeg and systemd address different failure modes. FFmpeg may reconnect internally when a supported network input is interrupted and the process remains alive. systemd can launch a new FFmpeg process after it exits. Neither layer alone proves that the destination is receiving playable audio, nor does process supervision make a finite file repeat indefinitely.
Before deployment, confirm the Linux distribution, installed systemd and FFmpeg versions, input type, publishing protocol, and destination behavior. The systemd service reference documents restart behavior, but the local version and service limits matter: systemd.service documentation.

Validate the FFmpeg command before creating the service
Make it work in the foreground
First run the exact FFmpeg command interactively and confirm that it reads the intended audio, produces the required output, and behaves as intended over time. This topic does not specify whether the source is a local file, HTTP stream, or another input, or whether the output is RTMP or another protocol, so there is no safe universal command line to copy.
For a local sleep-sounds file that should repeat, choose and test an FFmpeg looping strategy appropriate to that input and output timing. For a live source, EOF and reconnection behavior are different. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and verify options against the installed build.
Keep service arguments explicit
Use the absolute path to FFmpeg and pass arguments directly in ExecStart=. systemd does not automatically run this setting through a shell, so shell features such as pipes, redirection, and variable expansion do not work there as they would in an interactive shell. If shell logic is genuinely needed, put it in a reviewed executable script and invoke that script explicitly.
Protect any live stream key or other credential. Do not publish it in an example, commit it to a repository, or place it in a world-readable unit file. Use a credential mechanism appropriate to the distribution and deployment, and ensure only the service needs access.

Create a systemd unit for FFmpeg
Write the unit file
For a system service, create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service with this adaptable outline. Replace the command placeholder with the arguments from your validated command; this is a structural template, not a tested drop-in.
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg sleep sounds stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/sleep-stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg <your validated FFmpeg arguments>
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
User=streamillustrates running with a dedicated, limited-privilege account. Create that account if you use it, and grant it only the permissions it needs.WorkingDirectory=must exist and be accessible to the service user. Use absolute paths for input files where practical, and make sure they are readable by that user.Wants=andAfter=network-online.targetexpress a startup dependency and ordering hint. Check whether your VPS distribution enables a meaningful network-online wait service; these lines do not guarantee Internet reachability or endpoint availability.Restart=on-failurerequests recovery after failure, not necessarily after a clean intentional exit. Choose a different restart policy only if you want different behavior. See the installed systemd documentation for the exact semantics.RestartSec=5sis an example delay, not a universal recommendation. A bad command can repeatedly fail, so account for local start limits, recovery needs, and journal volume.
Choose restart behavior deliberately
Use on-failure when an unsuccessful exit should trigger another attempt but a clean exit should not automatically loop forever. Other restart settings have different behavior; select one based on whether a normal FFmpeg exit is expected and whether restarting after it is desirable. Repeated failures can be subject to systemd start limits, so diagnose the cause rather than simply shortening the delay.

Load, enable, and start the service
After saving the unit, run these commands as an administrator, replacing the unit name if you chose another one:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service -f
daemon-reloadmakes systemd reread unit files.enable --nowconfigures the service to start at boot and starts it immediately.statusshows whether the unit is active or failed, its exit result, and recent messages.journalctl -ffollows new journal entries for the service. For a one-time review of this boot, usesudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service -b.
journalctl displays entries stored by systemd’s journal services; see the journalctl manual for systemd 255. If no FFmpeg output appears, check the service’s output settings, whether FFmpeg writes messages to standard output or error, and the VPS distribution’s journal configuration and retention.

Use FFmpeg reconnect options only for the matching protocol
FFmpeg’s protocol options are specific to the protocol and direction in which they apply. Its protocol documentation describes options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, and retry limits. For HTTP input, for example, reconnect is described as reconnecting after disconnection before EOF; reconnect_at_eof treats EOF like an error and is described as useful for live or endless streams. These descriptions do not make the options universal recovery switches.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not copy HTTP input options blindly onto an RTMP output or assume they handle every publishing-server disconnect. Check the current documentation and your installed FFmpeg build for the actual protocol and failure mode. The FFmpeg documentation describes the reconnect option as: “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.” That is a description of a particular option, not a promise that all streams or outputs reconnect successfully.
Troubleshoot failures in a useful order
- Check the unit state and exit result. Run
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-sleep-stream.serviceand note whether the service is active, failed, or repeatedly restarting. - Read the service logs. Run
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service -b; add-fto follow new entries. Look for authentication errors, missing inputs, invalid arguments, unsupported codecs or protocols, endpoint rejection, and resource problems. - Verify the command and execution context. Confirm the absolute FFmpeg path, argument boundaries, working directory, and environment. Run the validated command as the configured service user under equivalent permissions and conditions.
- Check inputs, credentials, and network access. Confirm that audio files exist and are readable, the destination URL is correct, credentials are current and protected, and outbound network access is allowed.
- Confirm what recovered. Check the journal for a new process start, then separately verify at the destination that the stream is recognized and audible. A successful process restart is not proof of a successful broadcast.
- If FFmpeg stays alive but audio stops, investigate that condition separately. A process-exit restart policy may not detect a stalled output. Use protocol-specific recovery or a carefully designed health check only after defining what healthy means for this stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded sleep-sounds videos live on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg service on your VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it supports whatever quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and gives the first day free with no card. This is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a live camera feed or streaming to other platforms.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo, or see how StreamNeo works.
