The first path manages the event in Switchboard; the second keeps the event setup in YouTube. In both cases, sending encoder video is not necessarily the same as launching the event—you must follow the launch step for the path you chose.
Choose where to create the scheduled event
| Path | Where you create the event | What you do in Switchboard | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switchboard Scheduled Event | Switchboard workflow or Events Page Manager | Add a YouTube destination, send encoder video, then click Start Streaming. | You want to manage the scheduled event and its destinations in the Switchboard workflow. |
| YouTube event plus Custom RTMP | YouTube Studio / Live Control Room | Copy that event’s Stream URL and Stream Key into a Custom RTMP destination, then launch from Switchboard. | You have already created the YouTube event or want to use its event-specific key. |
Switchboard’s current Scheduled Events guide documents the Switchboard-managed path. Its separate Custom RTMP guide covers connecting an event created in YouTube. They are distinct workflows, not contradictory instructions: use the steps for the event you created.

Path 1: Create and launch a Switchboard Scheduled Event
Create the event
- Open the workflow you want to use and create a Scheduled Event, or open the Events Page Manager and choose New Event. If you start in the manager, select the workflow for the event.
- Enter an internal event name, then enter the public stream title and description and set the start date and time.
- Add a thumbnail or keep the default.
- Add the YouTube destination by selecting an account destination already saved in Switchboard, or connect a new one. Switchboard says a scheduled event page is created for YouTube Partner Destinations as well.
Send video and start the event
- At the scheduled event’s workflow, open the Upcoming Events tab.
- Start sending video from your encoder to the workflow, then confirm that Switchboard is receiving video. This is a readiness step; it does not itself launch the event.
- Switchboard’s guide says Start Streaming turns green 30 minutes before the scheduled time when the encoder feed is present. Click Start Streaming to launch all destinations in the event group.
The current support guide describes the 30-minute mark, but does not restate a late-start deadline. Switchboard’s September 3, 2025 launch article described a flexible start window of up to six hours after the scheduled time and expiry if the event was not started within six hours. Treat that as launch-era guidance, not a guaranteed current rule; check the dashboard or Switchboard support before relying on it.
Stop and archive the event
When the broadcast is over, click Stop Streaming in the event header. Switchboard says the event is archived and removed from the workflow. For supported destinations, post-event analytics are available in the Events Page Manager.

Path 2: Create the event in YouTube Studio and connect it with Custom RTMP
Schedule the YouTube event and copy its connection details
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create and schedule the livestream.
- Open the scheduled event and copy its Stream URL and Stream Key. Keep the two values distinct; each belongs in its correspondingly named Switchboard field.
- Set the public event details in YouTube Studio: title, description, visibility, date, time, audience setting and thumbnail. The Switchboard Custom RTMP guide says titles and descriptions entered in Switchboard do not transfer to Custom RTMP destinations, including YouTube scheduled events.
Add the event to Switchboard and launch
- In Switchboard, add a Custom RTMP destination.
- Paste the YouTube event’s Stream URL into the Stream URL field and its Stream Key into the Stream Key field. Switchboard recommends using a new stream key for the scheduled event to help ensure the feed attaches to that specific event.
- When ready, send encoder video to Switchboard and select the Custom RTMP destination.
- Click Go Live in Switchboard.
YouTube’s official live-streaming production guide also describes scheduling in YouTube Studio, copying the stream key into an encoder and launching from the Live Control Room. YouTube notes that scheduled streams can be discoverable in search and subscriber feeds, and potentially on the home page.
Which path should you use?
- Choose a Switchboard Scheduled Event when you want the event created and managed through a Switchboard workflow, with destination launch handled from the event.
- Choose YouTube Studio plus Custom RTMP when the event already exists in YouTube or you specifically need to connect that event’s Stream URL and key.
- Check event metadata in YouTube if using Custom RTMP: Switchboard titles and descriptions do not populate that destination.
- Check the selected destination and incoming feed before launch in either path. The encoder must send to the intended Switchboard workflow or destination.
The documented workflows establish different setup and management paths; they do not establish that one produces better audience outcomes than the other.

Troubleshooting common problems
Start Streaming is not available or the workflow is not ready
Check that your encoder is sending video to the correct workflow and that Switchboard is receiving it. For a Scheduled Event, the guide ties the green Start Streaming button to the presence of encoder video at the 30-minute-before mark.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe stream schedules instead of going live
Switchboard’s FAQ says this can happen when the active template is missing a YouTube stream title. Stop the stream, update the YouTube title in the designated field, then follow Switchboard’s connection-troubleshooting steps.

The YouTube event does not receive the feed
For Custom RTMP, verify that the event’s Stream URL and Stream Key have been pasted into the correct fields. Confirm that the encoder is sending to the intended Switchboard destination and that you selected that destination before clicking Go Live.
You removed YouTube from a scheduled event
Removing the YouTube destination permanently deletes its public event page. Links already shared for that destination stop working, and viewers who selected Notify Me lose that event subscription. Avoid removing the destination after sharing the event unless you are prepared to replace the link and notify viewers.
