OBS Replay Buffer is not a continuous-streaming tool. It saves recent footage when you trigger its configured hotkey; to keep an ASMR broadcast live, use YouTube’s encoder workflow and feed the encoder either a live audio/video source or a playback source for prerecorded material. For a stream that should keep running without a computer at home, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is an alternative.
Replay Buffer versus a continuous YouTube stream
Replay Buffer is for capturing recent moments on demand, not for keeping a broadcast online. OBS’s overview describes enabling the feature and setting a save hotkey under Hotkeys. A continuous YouTube stream instead needs an encoder connected to a YouTube live stream with its server URL and stream key.

For live ASMR, the encoder sends your microphone and other live sources. For a continuous prerecorded program, a playback source or playlist must supply video and audio to the encoder. The official pages cited here establish the encoder workflow, but do not provide a complete OBS playlist-loop recipe or establish that a particular source will restart unattended; test the playback and recovery behavior you intend to use.

Choose the kind of continuity you need
- Live performance: You are making ASMR in real time, and the stream should remain available while you perform. The microphone, encoder, computer and internet connection all need to keep working.
- Prerecorded loop: You want previously recorded ASMR to play as a live program. A playback source has to feed the encoder, and you need to verify that it loops and recovers as expected.
- Cloud playback: You want prerecorded video to continue without keeping a computer or home connection on. Set up a DIY encoder stream
- Create or select the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Locate the stream URL and stream key provided for that stream.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS or another encoder, enter YouTube’s server URL and the stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the connection and preview workflow.
- Set output for your actual upload capacity. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate together using YouTube’s current encoder settings; bitrate depends on the chosen resolution and frame rate, so there is no single appropriate value for every setup. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload bandwidth headroom. That is guidance from YouTube Help, which does not state a publication year on the page.
- Feed the right source. For a live ASMR session, select the microphone and any other sources you will actually use. For prerecorded programming, configure the playback source or playlist that supplies the recording. The sources cited here do not verify exact OBS loop settings, so check that playback continues through the end of a file and across transitions before relying on it unattended.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming from the encoder, then confirm that the incoming signal appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room before making the broadcast public or beginning the event. Watch for dropped frames, audio problems or a missing signal.
- Test a representative session. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. For ASMR, include quiet passages and transitions in the test, not just a loud opening. This is an application of YouTube’s representative-testing guidance, not a separate platform rule for ASMR. Check local recordings too if you are making them, and confirm the files are growing as expected.
Plan for long broadcasts, archives and rewind
Decide whether your priority is keeping one public stream uninterrupted, preserving individual video-on-demand archives, or allowing viewers to rewind. These are different outcomes. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not promise the same result for a stream that runs longer. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, particularly beyond 12 hours. Check the current encoder guidance and DVR information for your planned broadcast.

Keep a separate local recording if retaining a copy matters to you, and verify that it is being written during the stream. A live broadcast should not be treated as the only reliable archive when your session length may exceed YouTube’s stated archive or rewind conditions.
RTMP or HLS?
HLS is a documented option for supported YouTube workflows, but it is not automatically a lower-latency or more reliable fix. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. Its HLS setup instructions specify constraints including TS format, a rolling playlist and segment durations of 1–4 seconds. Use HLS only when your workflow calls for it and meets those requirements; changing protocol alone does not solve interruptions caused by an unstable computer, encoder or network.

Troubleshoot interruptions and poor quality
- YouTube shows no incoming video: Confirm the encoder is running, the correct server URL is entered, and the stream key belongs to the selected live stream. Check the Live Control Room preview before expecting viewers to see a signal.
- The stream disconnects or drops frames: Check the computer and network for interruptions, then lower the output demand if your connection cannot sustain it. Leave the recommended upload headroom rather than planning to use the full measured upload capacity.
- ASMR audio is too quiet, missing or inconsistent: Test the actual microphone and audio path, including quiet sections and transitions. Monitor audio during the broadcast; a successful video preview does not by itself confirm that the sound is usable.
- Prerecorded playback stops or fails to loop: Test the complete playback path before going live, including the end of the file and the transition to the next item. Do not assume OBS Replay Buffer controls playback or that a loop will restart after a crash.
- Viewers cannot rewind or the archive is absent: Check how long the stream ran and the platform’s archive and DVR guidance. Streams beyond 12 hours may not have the same automatic archive or rewind behavior described for shorter streams.
- HLS has more delay than expected: That is consistent with YouTube’s explanation that HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP. Review the HLS-specific setup requirements rather than treating it as a continuity switch.

Using your own recording does not remove the need to check rights for every element in the broadcast. Confirm that you have permission to stream any music, samples, background audio, visuals or other material in your program. Review YouTube’s current live-stream rules and your channel’s eligibility and settings before scheduling a long broadcast.
