How to Use Steam Remote Play Together for Cozy Co-op Games

Steam Remote Play Together lets one person run a supported local co-op game while friends join over the internet. The host owns and launches the game; guests accept an invite in Steam Chat and send controller input back to the host computer. Guests do not need to buy or launch the game themselves.

For a low-friction cozy session, choose a title whose Steam store page explicitly says “Remote Play Together,” launch it first, invite friends with Shift+Tab, then assign each controller in the Remote Play panel. Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition suits a relaxed two-player evening, while Unrailed! supports up to four players and demands faster teamwork.

What Steam Remote Play Together actually does

Remote Play Together extends a game’s local multiplayer mode across the internet. The host computer runs the game and sends its video, audio and voice to invited friends. Each guest’s controller input travels back to that host, so the arrangement behaves like everyone is sitting in the same room.

Valve describes the feature as streaming “video, audio, and voice between players while using your own controllers.” The game is shown to invited friends without exposing the host’s desktop. The host can decide whether keyboard and mouse control is shared, and can change that access while the session is running.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

This is different from a game’s ordinary online multiplayer mode. A title may support online play yet lack Remote Play Together, or it may provide both. Check the Steam store page for the exact phrase “Remote Play Together” before planning a session.

What each player needs

Host requirements

  • A Steam account signed in on a computer with the game installed.
  • A game whose store listing includes Remote Play Together support.
  • A computer capable of running the game while encoding and streaming its video and audio.
  • A stable internet connection; the host carries the game-processing and streaming workload.

Guest requirements

  • A Steam account connected to the host as a Steam Friend.
  • Steam installed and an internet connection suitable for real-time streaming.
  • A controller for the simplest local-co-op experience, unless the host deliberately shares keyboard and mouse control.
  • No purchase or installation of the game when the host is running a supported title. Valve’s FAQ specifically says invited friends can join without owning or launching it.

Controllers and player slots

Steam can accept each participant’s own controller. The game still determines how many local players it supports and which input combinations are valid. A controller per active player avoids keyboard conflicts, especially in games designed around simultaneous local control. An Xbox-compatible controller is a practical choice for PC play, but compatibility, button prompts and player count remain game-specific.

Ownership, cost and account expectations

Remote Play Together changes who needs a copy of the game, not who hosts the session. The host must purchase or otherwise have the supported title in their Steam library, install it and run it. A guest does not need to buy a second copy or install the game simply to join the host’s local co-op session. That makes the feature useful for trying a cooperative game with friends before everyone commits to a purchase, although the host still needs a legitimate Steam copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every participant still needs Steam access and an invitation from the host. The practical cost is therefore usually one game purchase for the host plus any controllers people choose to use. Do not promise a particular sale price: Steam pricing changes, and Remote Play Together availability is a feature listed on each game’s store page rather than a separate universal subscription.

Step-by-step: host a Remote Play Together session

  1. Confirm support. Open the game’s Steam store page and verify that its features include Remote Play Together. Do not rely on a generic “online multiplayer” label.
  2. Install and launch the game. The host must run the game locally before sending the invitation. Load the menu or save area where local co-op can be joined.
  3. Open the Steam overlay. While the game is focused, press Shift+Tab. This opens Steam’s in-game overlay.
  4. Open the Friends List. In the overlay, choose Friends List so the host can see online Steam Friends.
  5. Send the invitation. Right-click the friend to invite and choose the Remote Play Together invitation command.
  6. Have the guest accept. The friend accepts the invitation in the Steam chat window. Steam then connects the guest to the host’s running local session.
  7. Assign inputs. Open the Remote Play panel in the overlay and check that each controller is assigned to the intended player slot. If a keyboard or mouse is being shared unintentionally, disable that sharing there.
  8. Join the local game. Follow the game’s own prompt for adding a local player. Some titles add players from the main menu; others require pressing a button after the level or save has loaded.

The invitation flow is host-led: the host launches and runs the game, while the guest accepts the chat invitation. A guest should not launch a second copy of the title, because the feature is forwarding input into the host’s single running copy.

Manage controls and permissions during play

Use one controller per player

Connect or pair each controller before joining the session, then inspect the Remote Play panel after every guest arrives. A controller that is connected to the guest device can still appear in the host’s player-assignment view; assign it to the correct slot rather than assuming Steam chose the desired order.

  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

If a game displays the wrong button prompts, leave the game paused, correct the assignment in the Remote Play panel, and return to the local multiplayer screen. The exact number of usable controllers and the way players join are defined by the game’s local multiplayer design.

Share keyboard and mouse only when needed

Remote Play Together can share the host’s keyboard and mouse, but that is an optional permission, not a requirement. It is useful for a title that expects a keyboard player, yet two people pressing the same keyboard can create movement, menu and text-entry conflicts. Revoke keyboard or mouse sharing from the Remote Play panel when it interferes with controller input.

Keep the host computer private

Friends see the game’s stream rather than the host’s general desktop. Even so, close unrelated windows and notifications before inviting anyone, and keep the game in focus. Remote Play’s isolation prevents normal desktop browsing from being part of the stream, while a clean game window reduces accidental interruptions.

Choose a cozy game by mood, group size and pace

“Cozy” is not a control scheme. Before inviting people, decide whether the group wants a quiet routine, a finite cooperative challenge, or something in between. The following comparison uses the supported local-player counts and descriptions on each game’s Steam listing.

Game Local/Remote Play Together capacity Session feel Input and coordination Important context
Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition Two players; the second player is Daffodil the cat Gentle, routine-driven and open-ended Two-player controller setup is straightforward; coordinate at your own pace The story deals with death and includes references to disability, mental illness and suicide
Unrailed! Up to four players in online or local co-op Energetic teamwork with short, pressured bursts Developers recommend controllers; players gather resources and build track together Procedurally generated worlds and a train that must not derail make communication important

Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition for a calm two-player session

Spiritfarer is a management adventure about operating a ferry for spirits. Its activities include farming, mining, fishing, harvesting, cooking, weaving and crafting. The Steam listing describes roughly 30 hours to finish and more than 50 hours to experience everything, so a Remote Play session can be a short routine or part of a longer shared save.

The optional second player controls Daffodil, the cat. That makes it a natural choice for two friends who want to divide everyday tasks rather than react to a timer. Set expectations before starting: the “cozy” presentation includes mature themes concerning death, disability, mental illness and suicide. A player seeking purely lighthearted comfort may prefer to know that in advance.

Unrailed! for a four-player teamwork challenge

Unrailed! asks a cooperative group to build railroad track across procedurally generated environments while keeping the train moving and preventing a derailment. Its Steam listing supports up to four players in local or online co-op, includes Remote Play Together and lists full Xbox controller support. The developers recommend playing with a controller.

Choose it when the group enjoys communication, quick decisions and compact rounds. Four players can divide jobs—gathering materials, laying track, clearing obstacles and managing the train—but the same density of inputs can feel hectic compared with a two-player management game.

A practical selection checklist

  • Mood: choose Spiritfarer’s gentle routine for decompression, or Unrailed!’s urgency for active teamwork.
  • Group size: Spiritfarer is a two-player choice; Unrailed! can accommodate up to four.
  • Input: use a controller per participant when the game is controller-oriented; reserve keyboard sharing for cases that need it.
  • Session structure: Spiritfarer supports open-ended progress, while Unrailed! creates discrete cooperative pressure as the train advances.
  • Content: mention Spiritfarer’s mature themes before inviting someone who may find them difficult.

Plan the session before sending invitations

Ask how many people will actually play, which devices they will use and whether everyone is comfortable with the game’s tone. This avoids a common mismatch: inviting four people to a title designed for two, or choosing a frantic railroad game for a group expecting a quiet management evening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Spiritfarer, decide who will handle which ferry tasks and remember that the second player appears as Daffodil rather than another human-shaped character. For Unrailed!, agree on short callouts before the train starts. One person can gather materials, another can lay track, another can clear obstacles and another can watch the train’s progress. These are informal roles, but they reduce duplicated actions when the pace rises.

Have everyone connect controllers before the invite. A quick test in the game’s menu confirms that the host’s computer is receiving each device and gives you time to fix an assignment before a save or challenge is underway.

How streaming affects the experience

Remote Play is real-time streaming, not a file transfer. Steam sends the host’s rendered video and game audio to the guests and returns their input. Valve describes that input as arriving “within milliseconds” when using a fast internet connection, but it does not publish one universal bandwidth or latency requirement for every game and setup.

That means the host computer, the host’s network path and each guest’s connection all matter. A graphically demanding game can consume more host resources while it is being played and streamed. A crowded or unstable connection can make controls feel delayed even when the game itself is running normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before inviting everyone

  • Close demanding programs on the host computer so the game and stream have consistent resources.
  • Connect controllers and test that the host can see each one before the session begins.
  • Ask guests to use a stable connection and avoid large downloads or streams during play.
  • Start with the game’s least demanding scene or menu so everyone can verify audio and input before committing to a long session.

Troubleshooting Remote Play Together

The Remote Play Together invitation is missing

  1. Confirm the game’s Steam store page explicitly lists Remote Play Together.
  2. Make sure the host has launched the game; the invitation command is provided from the in-game Friends List flow.
  3. Press Shift+Tab again to reopen the Steam overlay if it was closed.
  4. Open Friends List, right-click the intended Steam Friend and look for the Remote Play Together invite rather than a generic game invite.

The friend cannot join

  1. Ask the guest to check Steam Chat and accept the invitation there.
  2. Verify that the guest is signed in to the invited Steam account, not a different account or offline profile.
  3. After acceptance, return to the Remote Play panel and confirm that the guest appears and has an input device assigned.
  4. If the game has a local co-op join prompt, have the guest press the required controller button only after the host reaches that screen.

The controller is connected but the player cannot act

  • Open the Remote Play panel and assign the controller to an available player slot.
  • Check that another participant has not claimed the slot or that the host has not retained the guest’s controller assignment.
  • Use one controller per active player, then re-enter the game’s local multiplayer screen if it does not detect the revised assignment immediately.

Keyboard and mouse input conflicts with controllers

Open the Remote Play panel and revoke keyboard or mouse sharing. Keep keyboard control with the host unless the game genuinely needs a keyboard player. Once sharing is disabled, have the affected players use their assigned controllers and rejoin the local player slots if necessary.

The stream stutters or controls feel delayed

  1. Check that the host computer is not overloaded by closing other demanding applications.
  2. Have both host and guests verify that their connections are stable.
  3. Reduce the host game’s graphics load to give the computer more room to render and stream.
  4. Pause and reconnect one guest at a time if the session became unstable immediately after a new player joined.

Steam’s cited guidance does not provide a single bandwidth or latency threshold, so there is no reliable universal number at which every Remote Play session will fail. Diagnose the host workload, network stability and controller assignment separately instead of treating every stutter as a game bug.

Pitfalls that derail an otherwise cozy evening

  • Inviting before launching: the host should have the game running so the Remote Play Together command appears in the correct context.
  • Confusing online co-op with Remote Play Together: only the exact store-page feature confirms that a local session can be streamed this way.
  • Assuming guests need a copy: invited Steam Friends can join without owning or launching the title, but they still need to accept the invitation and provide usable input.
  • Ignoring local-player limits: adding more guests than the game supports will not create extra player slots.
  • Leaving permissions unchecked: keyboard and mouse sharing can override or conflict with controller actions; review it in the Remote Play panel.
  • Skipping the test: verify audio, input and player assignments in a menu before starting a long save or a time-sensitive round.

A repeatable checklist for your next cozy session

  1. Pick a game with the Remote Play Together feature listed on its Steam store page.
  2. Match the game to the group: two players and a calm pace for Spiritfarer, or up to four players and faster coordination for Unrailed!.
  3. Tell guests whether the game contains mature themes and whether a controller is expected.
  4. Connect one controller per active player and launch the game on the host computer.
  5. Press Shift+Tab, open Friends List, right-click each friend and send the Remote Play Together invitation.
  6. Have every guest accept in Steam Chat.
  7. Use the Remote Play panel to assign controllers and disable unwanted keyboard or mouse sharing.
  8. Run a short input and audio check before starting a longer save or challenge.

What controller does each player need?

Each participant can use their own controller. An Xbox-compatible controller is a practical PC option, but the game’s local multiplayer design determines compatibility, button prompts and the number of player slots. Unrailed!’s developers recommend controllers.

Can we play with keyboard and mouse?

The host can choose whether to share keyboard and mouse control from the Remote Play panel. It is optional and can cause conflicts when multiple people use the same keyboard, so one controller per player is usually simpler.

How many people can play Spiritfarer or Unrailed!?

Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition supports optional two-player local co-op, with the second player controlling Daffodil the cat. Unrailed! supports up to four players in local or online co-op and includes Remote Play Together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the Remote Play Together option missing?

Check that the Steam store page explicitly lists Remote Play Together, launch the game first, press Shift+Tab to reopen the overlay and use the Friends List. A generic online multiplayer label is not the same feature.

What internet speed do we need?

Steam describes input returning within milliseconds on a fast connection but does not publish one universal bandwidth or latency number. Use stable connections, reduce competing traffic and check the host computer’s workload if the stream stutters.

Can friends see my desktop?

Steam streams the game rather than exposing the host’s desktop. Keeping unrelated windows and notifications closed is still sensible because it prevents interruptions and keeps the session focused.

The Bottom Line

The reliable formula is simple: choose a Steam title that explicitly supports Remote Play Together, have the host launch it, invite Steam Friends with Shift+Tab, accept through Steam Chat, and assign one controller per active player. Guests do not need their own copy. Pick Spiritfarer for a gentle two-player routine or Unrailed! for up to four players and more urgent teamwork, then test input and streaming before settling into the session.
