On supported Samsung Galaxy Z phones, this activates Flex Mode, placing the game on the upper display and controls or system tools on the lower display. For a second app, use Android’s Multi Window tray; for newer devices that offer Android 17 Foldable Gaming Mode, use its game-above/virtual-gamepad layout.
The exact result depends on the phone model, One UI or Android release, game orientation and whether the game has been adapted for foldables. Use the procedures below to choose an angle and layout that remain usable rather than assuming every title will automatically reflow.

What the folded gaming layouts actually do
A foldable can present three different gaming arrangements, and they solve different problems:

Samsung’s developer documentation calls the partially opened state HALF-OPENED. It is intended to let apps reorient for hands-free activities such as playing games, with the lower half available for navigation or controls.

Set up a game in Flex Mode
1. Check the prerequisites
- Install the latest available phone software and update the game.
- Confirm that your exact model and regional software support Flex Mode.
- Use a solid table or an adjustable foldable-phone stand; a soft or sloped surface can let the hinge angle drift.
- If the game needs physical buttons, have a compatible Bluetooth controller available and check the game’s own input settings.
2. Launch before folding
- Open the phone fully.
- Start the game and wait until its main play screen is visible.
- Fold the device slowly instead of snapping it shut. Begin at approximately 90 degrees.
- Stop when the phone forms a stable L shape and the game remains correctly oriented.
On a supported Samsung device, the partially folded position should trigger Flex Mode. Samsung describes the supported operating range as 75 to 115 degrees. The game normally remains on the upper section while the lower section presents controls or other available tools.
3. Turn on the Flex mode panel when controls do not appear
- Open Settings.
- Choose Advanced features.
- Select Flex mode panel and turn it on.
- Return to the game and fold the phone again.
The panel can provide brightness and volume controls, notifications, screenshots and a touchpad. It is useful when a game does not supply its own lower-half interface, but it does not convert every game into a split controller.
4. Enable an app through Labs if it does not auto-trigger
Samsung’s buying guidance places additional per-app Flex Mode controls under Settings → Advanced features → Labs → Flex Mode panel on supported software. If the game is listed there, enable it, relaunch the game while fully open and fold again. Menu names can vary with One UI version, so search Settings for “Flex mode” if the path differs.

Choose the hinge angle that stays playable
Start near 90 degrees
A right-angle position is a practical starting point because it gives the upper display a clear viewing surface and leaves the lower half available for touch input. Move only a few degrees at a time until text, touch targets and the game’s camera are comfortable.
Use the documented Samsung range, not an arbitrary maximum
Samsung’s UK guide describes Flex Mode as operating when the display is positioned anywhere between 75 and 115 degrees. That range is a software and device guidance range, not a promise that every game will look identical throughout it. A title may react at one angle but not another, or may keep a standard layout even though the phone is technically in the range.
Keep the hinge from moving
- Set the phone on a level, hard surface or a stand that supports both halves.
- Place the hinge so the upper screen cannot slowly tip backward.
- Keep charging cables and controller grips from pulling one half out of position.
- If a touch target is hard to reach, adjust the phone or game layout before changing the angle repeatedly.
Stability matters more than finding a special “gaming” angle. The best position is the one that remains fixed while you use the lower controls.

Add a second app with Multi Window
Open the Multi Window tray
- Open the game on the unfolded phone.
- Open the Multi Window or Multi app tray from the edge handle or recent-apps interface provided by your device.
- Drag the companion app to the top area to create a split-screen arrangement.
- Drag an app to the center when you want a floating pop-up window instead.
On a large unfolded display, the second app can be a guide, chat, music player or other low-priority companion. Keep the game as the dominant window; a narrow game pane can make touch controls and text difficult to use.

App support and the number of simultaneous windows vary by model. If the game pauses, rotates unexpectedly or becomes cramped, close the companion window and return to a single-app layout.
Use Android 17 Foldable Gaming Mode when available
Google describes Android 17’s Foldable Gaming Mode as a split-screen experience designed for folding devices. Its standard concept places the game on the top portion and a customizable virtual gamepad below.

Configure the virtual gamepad
- Launch a compatible game on a device running the software that provides Foldable Gaming Mode.
- Open the gaming-mode control shown with the lower gamepad area.
- Adjust the button layout to match the game’s on-screen actions.
- Change button size if taps are being missed.
- Enable dark mode for the gamepad when it improves contrast in your surroundings.
This mode can provide tactile-style on-screen controls without an external controller, but it remains virtual input. Games that require a different control scheme, hardware buttons or a particular orientation may still need their own settings or a Bluetooth controller.
Match the layout to the game
Landscape games
Keep the phone fully open when the game benefits from a broad landscape canvas, such as a strategy map, racing track or emulator view. A partially folded phone can divide that canvas or force a reorientation that the game does not handle well.

Portrait games
Portrait titles can work in a partially folded position if the game remains on the upper section and its controls are reachable below. Test the game’s rotation lock and touch targets before settling on an angle.

Games with native lower controls
These are the strongest candidates for Flex Mode. The game can place play information above the hinge and navigation or action buttons below, reducing the need to hold the phone.
Games without foldable adaptation
A game may simply show its normal interface on one portion, stretch across both portions, letterbox itself or ignore the hinge entirely. There is no universal setting that forces a correct reflow. Use the unfolded display, a conventional Multi Window arrangement or an external controller when the adapted layout is unusable.

Samsung Galaxy Z devices
Samsung describes Flex Mode as exclusive to its Galaxy Z series of foldable smartphones. Exact support still depends on the model, One UI release and region. Samsung’s current US Support page says Flex Mode is not supported on the Galaxy Z TriFold or Z Fold8, while Samsung’s UK buying guide lists Z Fold8 models among supported devices. Those statements conflict, so do not rely on a generic “Galaxy Z” label when buying or troubleshooting.

Check the phone itself before relying on a feature
- Open Settings and search for Flex mode, Flex mode panel or Multi Window.
- Record the exact model name and software version from About phone.
- Check the manufacturer’s support page for your region rather than a different country’s page.
- Update the phone, restart it and test with a game known to remain usable in a partially folded position.
Use a Bluetooth controller when touch controls are the bottleneck
Flex Mode and Android 17 can reserve a lower touch area, but neither guarantees the feel or input precision of physical buttons. Pair a compatible Bluetooth Android game controller through the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then open the game’s controller or input menu and map buttons if required.
A controller is especially useful when the lower display is occupied by a second app, when the title does not support Flex Mode, or when the game’s controls are too small after split screen reduces the available area. Confirm that the controller remains connected before starting a long session; the phone’s own game settings determine which buttons are recognized.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes
Flex Mode does not activate
- Fold the phone only after launching the game fully open.
- Confirm the hinge is in the partially opened state rather than nearly closed.
- Enable Settings → Advanced features → Flex mode panel.

- Verify model, region and One UI support, especially for models covered by conflicting Samsung documentation.
The game appears on the wrong half or rotates incorrectly
- Return to a fully open position and relaunch the game.
- Set the game and phone to the orientation the title officially supports.
- Try the unfolded layout if the title does not respond correctly to the hinge.
- Remove the second app before testing again; Multi Window can change the available aspect ratio.
The lower controls are missing
- Turn on the Flex mode panel and check whether the title exposes its own controls.
- Look for an Android 17 Foldable Gaming Mode gamepad if the device provides it.
- Use a controller when the game has no foldable-aware control layout.
The game becomes too cramped in split screen
- Drag the divider to give the game more space.
- Switch the companion app to pop-up view.
- Use audio playback in the background instead of keeping its window visible.
- Close the companion app for games that require a wide map or large touch targets.
The hinge angle keeps slipping
- Move the phone to a level, solid surface.
- Use an adjustable stand that supports both halves.
- Remove anything tugging on the charging or controller cable.
- Choose a slightly different position within the 75-to-115-degree Samsung guidance range and test whether it holds more securely.
A repeatable setup checklist
- Update the phone and game.
- Confirm exact model, region and software support for Flex Mode or Android 17 Foldable Gaming Mode.
- Open the phone fully and launch the game.
- Fold gradually, starting near 90 degrees.
- Place the device on a stable surface or stand.
- Enable the Flex mode panel if the lower controls do not appear.
- Use Multi Window only when the game still has adequate space.
- Try a low-priority guide, chat or music app first and close it if play becomes cramped.
- Pair a Bluetooth controller for titles that need physical buttons.
- Save the angle and layout that keep the game readable, responsive and stationary.
