The provider—not SpecFlow alone—discovers and executes the tests. For a new or actively maintained project, also assess Reqnroll, the SpecFlow-based successor, and verify compatibility before changing dependencies.
How SpecFlow automated testing fits together
A SpecFlow test has three parts: a Gherkin feature file describing behavior, .NET step definitions connecting scenario text to application or test-fixture actions, and a test provider that discovers and runs the executable tests generated from the scenarios.

- Feature file: organizes scenarios in language that developers, testers, and product stakeholders can discuss.
- Step definitions: methods use SpecFlow Given/When/Then attributes to match scenario steps and perform setup, actions, and checks.
- Test provider: the selected framework handles test discovery and execution through the project’s normal test workflow.
SpecFlow is therefore the BDD binding and orchestration layer; it does not replace the test provider.
Set up a SpecFlow test project
- Choose the test provider. Use the framework already established in the repository when it remains suitable, or choose one compatible with the target .NET project and the team’s IDE and CI workflow. SpecFlow training materials list MSTest, NUnit, xUnit, and SpecFlow+ Runner.
- Check package compatibility. Add the SpecFlow integration package for the chosen provider only after checking versions against the project’s .NET target and existing dependencies. Older setup instructions and package versions should not be assumed to work with a current project.
- Add a feature file. Put scenarios in a Gherkin feature file so they can be discovered and connected to step definitions by the configured SpecFlow setup.
- Build and run through the provider. Use the project’s normal build and test-runner workflow to confirm that generated scenarios are discovered and executed.
There is no universal package-version recipe here: the correct set depends on the actual .NET target, provider, and dependencies in the solution.
Write a behavior-focused Gherkin scenario
A feature groups related behavior. Within a scenario, Given establishes relevant context, When describes the action, and Then states the observable result. For example:
Feature: Adding an item to a basket
Scenario: A shopper adds an available item
Given an available item exists
When the shopper adds it to the basket
Then the basket contains that item
This is a generic illustration, not a tested, drop-in SpecFlow sample. Keep the wording about product behavior rather than implementation details; the scenario should make sense to the people who need to agree on the behavior.
Bind each step to .NET code
Create step-definition methods whose SpecFlow attributes match the Given, When, and Then text. The binding code sets up the fixture, drives the action, and checks the result. Keep assertions about observable behavior in the Then step or in a helper it calls.
For maintainability, separate reusable application-driving or test-automation logic into suitable helper layers instead of making scenario prose carry implementation detail. This is a practical design approach, not a required SpecFlow architecture. Every step must have a matching binding for the scenario to run as intended.
Build, discover, and execute the tests
- Build the .NET test project so the configured SpecFlow integration can generate the executable tests from the feature scenarios.
- Run the tests through the selected provider and confirm that the scenarios appear in its discovery output.
- Use the ordinary test-runner results to investigate a missing step binding, a failed assertion, or a setup problem.
- Fix the feature, binding, or fixture source and rebuild. Do not hand-edit generated test artifacts; they are framework output.
Choose a provider and plan for ongoing maintenance
MSTest, NUnit, xUnit, and SpecFlow+ Runner are provider choices identified in SpecFlow training materials; the available evidence does not establish a current head-to-head performance or feature winner. Compare the provider that suits the repository’s .NET target, IDE and CI discovery/execution needs, and the SpecFlow integration package that remains usable for that combination. Avoid casually mixing providers or copying dated configuration instructions.
For a new project or one receiving ongoing maintenance, assess Reqnroll alongside continuing with legacy SpecFlow dependencies. Reqnroll’s project describes itself as an open-source Cucumber-style BDD test automation framework for .NET created as a reboot of SpecFlow, and its repository says it is based on SpecFlow. Those are project-authored descriptions. Review the official migration guidance and verify the .NET target, provider, IDE workflow, plugins, and other dependencies in the actual solution; migration effort and compatibility are project-specific.

The available information does not establish SpecFlow’s current support policy, exact end-of-life milestones, or compatibility for any particular package set. Check the project’s current package and migration guidance rather than assuming a lifecycle date or promising a fixed migration time.
Troubleshoot common failures
- A scenario is not discovered: confirm that the feature file is included in the test project, the provider integration is configured, and the build completed. Then verify discovery using the chosen provider’s normal test workflow.
- A step has no matching binding: compare the Gherkin wording with the Given/When/Then binding attributes. Add or correct the matching step definition in source code.
- A Then step fails: inspect the asserted observable result and the state produced by the When action. Correct the behavior, fixture, or expectation rather than editing generated artifacts.
- The project fails to build after package changes: check that the SpecFlow integration package matches the selected provider and the project’s .NET target. Do not rely on version numbers from older tutorials without checking current compatibility.
- Tests pass locally but fail in CI: compare the provider and package configuration used by CI with the project’s local test workflow, then use the test-runner output to identify setup or discovery differences.
Or skip the browser setup: use ScreenshotNeo for website captures
SpecFlow is for .NET behavior tests, not a screenshot service. If a test workflow also needs website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call API capture. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
Best Value
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month—no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does SpecFlow execute tests by itself?
No. SpecFlow generates executable tests from feature scenarios; the configured test provider discovers and runs them.
Should a team starting a new .NET BDD project use SpecFlow or Reqnroll?
Assess Reqnroll as the SpecFlow-based successor, then verify the migration guidance and compatibility for the project’s .NET target, provider, plugins, and dependencies before deciding.
