First inspect the screenshot and output row; a Cloudflare challenge, a timeout, and a failed capture call for different next steps. The exact cause cannot be diagnosed without the target URL, Actor ID, run output, and settings. Apify has multiple screenshot Actors, so confirm which one ran before applying advice about its defaults. The closest-matching listing reviewed here is the community-maintained accountable_eel/website-screenshot, not an Apify-owned Actor: Actor listing.
Start by confirming the Actor and reading its output
Record the Actor ID and version from the Apify run, then check that Actor’s own README and input schema. The troubleshooting details below about output fields and a 45-second timeout apply to accountable_eel/website-screenshot; another Actor may behave differently.

For that listing, inspect the returned image alongside statusCode, error, note, and finalUrl. Compare the image with the intended page, check whether finalUrl redirected elsewhere, and read any error or note for timeout, HTTP, or challenge clues. The listing illustrates an HTTP 403 failure row and says a page blocked from cloud servers, or a check that never clears, returns an HTTP status and an error. It describes that failed row as free; this is not a general Apify billing guarantee. See the listing and its documented output.

- The row reports an error or HTTP status: use the status, error, note, and logs to distinguish an access block from another failure.
- The image is incomplete and an error is present: consider a slow or partially rendered page as well as a block.
Tell a challenge apart from a timeout
Cloudflare describes an interstitial challenge as holding a request while it evaluates the browser environment for automated signals; the destination is not served until the check is passed. A screenshot of that interstitial is not a successful capture of the requested page. Cloudflare: Interstitial Challenge Pages.
#1 Best Overall
For accountable_eel/website-screenshot, the documented hard per-URL limit defaults to 45 seconds. Its listing says a slow page can yield whatever rendered before the limit along with an error. If the actual Actor exposes a timeout setting, increasing it is a reasonable controlled test for a slow render—but extra waiting does not itself clear a site-side challenge or access block. Check the Actor’s current input schema rather than assuming that another Actor offers the same setting. Actor documentation.
Use this troubleshooting sequence
- Verify the Actor. Note its ID and version, and read the matching Actor’s README and input schema. Do not apply settings documented for a different Apify Actor.
- Inspect the actual response. Open the image; compare it to the intended page; check
finalUrl,statusCode, error, andnote. A challenge image indicates that the challenge response was captured instead of the destination. - Test for a slow render only when evidence points that way. Review the run duration and partial image. If the Actor supports a longer timeout, change that one setting and rerun the same URL to see whether content finishes rendering.
- Check logs and a page snapshot. Apify recommends structured logs identifying the URL and saved snapshots to help reveal changed markup, dynamic content that has not loaded, location-specific behavior, proxy access issues, or code and dependency errors. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of your run. Apify logging guidance.
- Reproduce the challenge in a human browser if useful. Cloudflare suggests checking browser compatibility and updates, enabling JavaScript, temporarily disabling extensions, trying a private session or another browser/device, checking VPN or proxy interference, and trying another network. If it persists, collect a HAR while preserving the log and export the browser console log. These checks can help investigate a human-browser challenge; they do not guarantee a cloud Actor will be allowed through. Cloudflare challenge troubleshooting.
- Escalate with evidence. Send the site owner or Actor maintainer the target URL, Actor ID and version, run input, relevant output row, screenshot, and logs. Cloudflare recommends contacting the website administrator if its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the challenge.
When another workflow may be appropriate
If your task genuinely requires a configurable browser workflow, Apify’s custom Playwright/Camoufox tutorial explains proxy configuration. It is a separate build, not a guaranteed fix for this screenshot Actor or proof that a protected site will allow access. Likewise, a Europe proxy suggestion documented for a separate Website Content Crawler issue should not be treated as a standard remedy here. Apify browser automation tutorial.
A separate community Web Unblocker Actor advertises browser-rendered HTML extraction, fresh residential-IP retries, and optional screenshots. That is a different product and its listing does not establish that it will clear any particular site’s protection. Choose a route based on whether you need a screenshot or extracted content, what diagnostics it returns, its timeout and retry controls, and what happens when a request fails. For a separate screenshot workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; for a URL capture, the API call is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and whether it was billed.
- Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture.
- The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Apify documents several general causes of Actor failures, including site changes, location differences, bot blocking, dynamic loading, code errors, proxy access, and dependency updates.
